AKA not actually going to work but we'll see... we'll see... |

05.15.12 | Watch Metalocalypse with her, and slowly, maybe, just maybe she'll get into Death. I'm currently in the middle of that process with my wife. |
deathofasalesman
05.15.12 | Not a half-bad idea. I can see it now...
Dethklok > Amon Amarth > In Mourning > Immolation |
Fluttertrank
05.15.12 | show her death if you show her death metal. Symbolic is the best start. or human |
deathofasalesman
05.15.12 | @Flutter: From a pop-lovers perspective though? Maybe if she liked Metallica or something but nah. |
deathofasalesman
05.15.12 | @sp: She knows Converge is my favorite band. She just hasn't heard them. I can see You Fail Me and Axe To Fall being more accessible than Jane Doe. |
deathofasalesman
05.15.12 | You sir are a genius. |
jg777
05.15.12 | Get some A Perfect Circle involved which will ease her into Tool and then her whole world will open up. |
jg777
05.15.12 | Yeah, i guess that's kind of like taking the easy/lazy way out. |
deathofasalesman
05.15.12 | If she gets into some hardcore then Weekend Nachos' "Worthless" and Extortion's "Sick" won't be that hard. Then with bands like Kvelertak get into Martydod then fucking Iskra. |
deathofasalesman
05.15.12 | Hell yeah. Same with that chick from Oathbreaker. She has the voice of a really sick, demented man but she's hot as hell. |
Omaha
05.15.12 | my last girlfriend loved Jane Doe on the first listen, and her favorite album was the Happy Feet soundtrack |
deathofasalesman
05.15.12 | She lied to you just so you'd go down on her. |
deathofasalesman
05.15.12 | I lied she's not hot as hell. But she's pretty cute. |
deathofasalesman
05.15.12 | This is my girlfriend, pretty cute.

Bloodhail
05.15.12 | assimilate or be destroyed baseline |
Wolfhorde
05.15.12 | Watch Metalocalypse with her [2] (though Dethklok might not even be a bad place to start since they're quite "melodic")
For the BM part you could also try:
Todtgelichter - Angst (similar to Lantlos)
Imperium Dekadenz - Vargsheim split (the song "Schlafen Wo die Wölfe herrschen, with acoustics and accessible melodies)
Dornenreich - Bitter Ist's dem Tod zu dienen
Vaura - Selenelion
Vinterland - Welcome My Last Chapter
For Death Metal you could also try to start with earlier Opeth stuff, in general I'd also maybe try Warning - Watching From A Distance.

05.15.12 | Back in the day those gypsies... we would have.. oh.. nevermind. |
deathofasalesman
05.15.12 | Thanks Wolf and SP. Fuck you Base.
And exactly what I'm thinking AdamK. |
AdamK
05.15.12 | Yeah probably longer actually considering she wasn't into heavy music to start. My transition from music like slipknot to stuff like converge took about 6 years. I always thought story of the year would be a good starting place because it's little screaming |
deathofasalesman
05.15.12 | She liked this band called Sonic Syndicate or something, sounded exactly like Haste the Day. Plus she goes to my band's shows and we play hardcore. I can sense a smooth transition. |
AdamK
05.15.12 | yeah i feel like from 4 to 5 would be the hardest |
Wolfhorde
05.15.12 | Oh, I wouldn't necessarily say it has to take a shitload of time. I started with Black Metal and Viking/Pagan/Folk stuff when I was 12/13 just because some 19 year old dude was like "hey, try that out". I started off with Burzum, early Satyricon, Gehenna, Equilibrium and similar. Took me less than a year to get my older brother into the m/ |
deathofasalesman
05.15.12 | I was I had that 19-year-old in my life when I was 12. Still grateful for my uncle though who basically set the foundation for my interest in rock and metal. The rest I had to figure out on my own. |
AdamK
05.15.12 | growing up the kids on my street were listening to green day,sum 41, linkin park, simple plan, good charlotte, korn, system of a down and I thought that was the best shit ever |
Wolfhorde
05.15.12 | I'm still surprised by the fact that apparently I was one of the few who actually checked out new stuff. If you would've mention metal on my old school everyone would've laughed at you. It was almost like ("mainstream" hip hop) was their religion. |
AdamK
05.15.12 | I didn't have a computer that may have been part of the problem |
Wolfhorde
05.15.12 | Computers teached me English. Sounds stupid, but that's actually what it started with. And I only had a computer because my father was a huge fan of those things since they first came out, he actually made quite some good money with them. I always played Commander Keen. |

05.15.12 | The heaviest I've got my gf to listen to is ADTR, but I don't mind, I'd rather not go to hardcore shows with her to have to protect her, fuck those guys. |
AdamK
05.15.12 | yeah dude my ex wanted to go to hardcore shows but i was like ehh next time |
AdamK
05.15.12 | unless its just for the sake of hearing music and i feel like just standing in the back or something |
Wolfhorde
05.15.12 | I would not underestimate them sometimes. I know someone who got a broken nose on a hardcore show from a chick, lol. |
sniper01
05.15.12 | i got my girl into hardcore by taking her to see some bands. honestly people are way more open-minded when they are seeing a performance. she's still not a big fan or anything but she's always down to go to shows and regularly listens to gayer-sounding bands like la dispute.
i wasn't trying to get her to change her taste in music though, i think it's sort of presumptuous for people to think they have better taste and want to "help" other people learn about music. just expose her to some stuff and maybe she'll grow into it. |
AdamK
05.15.12 | lol i would be embarrassed if that was my girlfriend |
Wolfhorde
05.15.12 | "of presumptuous for people to think they have better taste and want to "help" other people learn about music. just expose her to some stuff and maybe she'll grow into it."
I think it was meant more as an attempt to try to get her into things, you can't really get someone into something if there isn't already a foundation that the person MIGHT like it. You don't need to "change" someone to influence them musically, you just need to show them something they MIGHT like. |

05.15.12 | Showed my gf Death Grips, she didn't speak to me for two days. |
Wolfhorde
05.15.12 | Doing it wrong. |
sniper01
05.15.12 | yeah i know. i wasn't really talking about anyone specifically, just my thoughts in general. people try to do this all the time and it makes me laugh that people care so much what their friends/partners are listening to. i mean it's cool to have music in common but it's totally not necessary. music serves different purposes for different people, i have friends who listen to music i can't stand but you won't hear me telling them it's garbage because i don't really have any right to do that. |
AdamK
05.15.12 | sometimes the music someone listens to can say things about their personality and character though I believe |
Wolfhorde
05.15.12 | Well, of course not. But with a big musical repertoire chances aren't that low that you have somewhat common ground. And obviously trying to force something like that is completely ridiculous and most likely won't even work. But if there IS common ground I think that it doesn't hurt anybody if there's some "musical exchange". Obviously it's not anything dominant but it can be a nice feat. @Adam: Well, yeah in specific cases but most people with half a brain won't let the music they listen to dominate their behavior. |
sniper01
05.15.12 | probably, but changing their taste in music won't change their personality, and if you don't get along with them because of their personality, what do you care what they listen to? |
sniper01
05.15.12 | i usually only share music with:
other musicians
people who ask me to show them music
really close friends who i think will get a kick out of something |

05.15.12 | Description for 6 - yessssss |
AdamK
05.15.12 | "but most people with half a brain won't let the music they listen to dominate their behavior. "
what I mean is often the music you listen to has to do with life experiences and stuff like when I was going through shit with my parents i turned to metal and more emotional music. And I feel that the music I turn to actually builds character and the way you see the world, lifestyle choices etc, etc. |
sniper01
05.15.12 | Pianos Become The Teeth becomes Kidcrash becomes Hot Cross becomes Off Minor becomes Saetia becomes pg.99 becomes Orchid becomes awesome.
good luck getting past kidcrash. it would be cool though. |
sniper01
05.15.12 | i never went through any shit i just like heavy music because it sounds good to me. |
AdamK
05.15.12 | well yeah that too it's just one of the reasons |
Adabelle
05.15.12 | Even if you just get to Kidcrash still worth it, Naps is so so good.
Also that^ |
Adabelle
05.15.12 | Your profile picture is also really creepy |
Wolfhorde
05.15.12 | "i usually only share music with:

Well, I actually got asked a lot so yeah. And if someone starts something in that direction on their own without my "interference" I'm not gonna sit there and stare at them like I've just seen a ghost, if they wanna talk about music then why the hell not?
@Adam: Well, maybe to a certain extent but as I already said I don't like anything being dominating. If it was for the music I was listening to how I view the world would either be rather weird or incredibly pessimistic and I'm more the opposite. Music is an art form, and as art form it doesn't need a message or any kind of deeper sense or whatever for me. I enjoy what I enjoy, I just like music. Listening to it, talking about it, making it - or as means to vent. |
AdamK
05.15.12 | yeah i understand that but it can even make you see the world more beautifully because of the music it doesn't always have to be a direct message. Even taking a pessimistic album like Dangers- anger i can relate to it emotionally in the literal sense of the lyrics and also just the fact that a band is using music to actually make something meaningful and controversial/thought provoking is optimistic so it's like both at the same time. weird stuff |

05.15.12 | Dude, listen. She'll definitively will love Dance Gavin Dance, just put on Strawberry Swisher pts.1 & 2 and she'll melt lol
But I don't think Jane Doe is an album girls will like. Probably because it's a record about a fucked up relationship, so you might not want to go there ( personally love the album though, my favorite of all time.) |
mangasm
05.15.12 | I'll give to you, this is a damn good plan. |
MetallicOpeth
05.15.12 | yea I managed to get my gf into some metal, pretty sick |
OnlyAnchors
05.15.12 | lol this takes a looooong time trust me. been with my gf for 2 years and shes into good indie (as well as apple store indie), emo, and pop-punk. honestly i dont really care what she listens to anymore. we both can sing the E!E!IWALE ep's word for word and thats gd enough for me. |
deathofasalesman
05.15.12 | @sniper01: "I honestly don't care if my girlfriend listens to different music than me; I love and accept her for who she is, not what she likes." Direct quote from the list.
@Dolving999: I put on "Uneasy Hearts Weigh The Same" and I could tell she was into it.
I'm surprised by the reception this is getting. Like I said in the list this was just a funny thought in my head that I expanded on as I was making the list. I didn't really have a "10-step" plan just a 10-spot list lol. |
sniper01
05.15.12 | "yeah i know. i wasn't really talking about anyone specifically, just my thoughts in general."

05.15.12 | awesome list |
CrimsonLies
05.26.12 | I don't really like the idea of certain guys expecting their girlfriends to like what they like, not
saying any of you are doing this. I really couldn't care with what she listens to, I respect her taste
in music and opinions but she's very interested in what I listen to and surprisingly enough she loves
almost I show her.
So far she's been more into prog and post metal and slowly liking melodic death metal. I think that
melodeath is a good place to start for death metal, with bands such as Dark Tranquility and Insomnium.
Then continue building up from there.
Ahh, she is so awesome, I love her so much. :D |
Acrosstheshield13
07.06.12 | I think the farthest stretch is going to be Converge and WITHR...thats pretty intense stuff for someone who doesn't listen to it regularly. |
