Eclecticist 02.27.12	If there is a bruise on my fruit I usually take a paring knife and just cut that chunk off. Also, I don't take the bowl, tip it and drink the milk from the bowl like it's a cup. I use my spoon and scoop the leftover milk. My one exception is that if the cereal is really sugary I don't drink the milk because the amount of leftover sugar in it is fucking gross, it's like drinking a South Korean pre-packaged milkshake. My remedy for this situation is that I use less milk so that I waste less milk.

sniper01 02.27.12	soymilk tastes better (to me, i don't like the aftertaste of cow milk at all, makes me feel gross) and raising cows is terrible for the environment, i've almost completely given up beef products in general. i haven't gone all the way yet because i don't bother to avoid it in pre-prepared packaged foods but i don't order beef in restaurants or buy milk and cheese directly anymore. i've learned too much about food production and waste to want to continue being part of the demand for cow products.

How much water goes into producing one gallon of soy milk, though? A pound of coffee beans requires about 2,500 gallons of water, and I don't see people making a fuss about that. I don't really care so much about refraining from consuming cow products as I do about not getting them from a industrial source, if I can afford it. It's not so much about what you're consuming as it is about trying to do it in a sustainable manner (but, again, a lot of people can't afford this lifestyle). Also, household waste pales in comparison to industrial/commercial waste. Not to say you shouldn't do your part, and encouraging sustainable practices will hopefully instill similar attitudes towards industries, since that's really where the bulk of our waste comes from.
sniper01 02.27.12	the water thing was only one example, there are a number of reasons i try to avoid cow products. but i'm not saying i disagree with your points, nor am i pretending to be a saint, like i said. :) i'm obviously still learning new things (as i always will be), and my beliefs and worldview are obviously still evolving (as i hope they always will), and i feel good about any change i can make. i also try not to support obviously horrible corporations, but you know i have better things to do than spend all my time finding out which products have parts manufactured by bad companies, etc. i try not to willingly and knowingly contribute to the top line of companies like that though.
Vesper 02.27.12	Yeah, I figured as much, sniper - same goes for me. :] I can't be fucked to research every last product, but it's easy enough to spot a lot of inconsistencies in the sustainable/veggie market that I think people who care about this thing should think about to some extent. I just find the "x uses this amount of water, therefore it's bad" approach to be misleading, and I would qualify opposition to cow products as being against the industrial farms that cause widespread damage and waste, not lumping them with smaller, local farms (which produce better-tasting milk and meat, anyway).
