12.05.12 | First 5 I want to try to get reviews in this year
Next 5 I already reviewed |
foxblood
12.05.12 | dude a kyary review that'd be awesome, better be a 5. can't really answer your question tho since i
rarely review |
Masochist
12.05.12 | I've only reviewed 5 albums. I listened to three of them after quite a few play-throughs, but Mutemath's 'Odd Soul' I reviewed after hearing a live album listening party stream, and He Is Legend's 'It Hates You' I reviewed after only having the album a week.
The opinion change I had about 'It Hates You' just a month or two after reviewing it told me I needed to really give an album time to sink in if I was going to review it. |
menawati
12.05.12 | yea 5 or 6 sounds about right |
Electric City
12.05.12 | depends. 3-4 beforehand if im really excited about it, less if i hate it, then i listen continuously through reviewing |
Cygnatti
12.05.12 | try to give 2-3 listens before rating |
hitman02011
12.05.12 | i listen to a minimum of 2 songs on the album before i review |
klap
12.05.12 | enough times so i can write about it so it varies |
Lenix
12.05.12 | sounds about right for ins |
Xenophanes
12.05.12 | I don't listen at all. Just say either it's too much like past material and it sucks/rules, or it's too different and it sucks/rules. Follow this paradigm and you could be like me. I haven't listened to music since 2009. |
Trebor17
12.05.12 | My opinion can easily change between 5-10 listens which is why I like to wait till 10 you know
I guess how long it takes for an album to sink in differs from person to person and album to album |
menawati
12.05.12 | I spose it depends on your first listen, I dont bother reviewing things I hate but if I really like it 3 or 4 listens is sometimes enough. The hardest is when it's like a 2.5/3 on first listen because some of those can become 4 or 4.5 after like 10 or more listens and you end up doing a review you disagree with later. |
Cygnatti
12.05.12 | I don't like giving an album so many listens in one time because I feel like I'd get tired of it at some point. Space out the listens helps keep up the interest for me. |
ZGP1992
12.05.12 | It depends on the album, I personally make sure Ive heard the whole thing at least 2 or 3 times. If im unsure of it I give it more time until I know how I feel about it. |
CaptainDooRight
12.05.12 | at least 5-8 times |
Atari
12.05.12 | for me it depends on the genre |
WeepingBanana
12.05.12 | 0 times |
Voivod
12.05.12 | I try to listen to an album for as long as it may take (weeks, sometimes months) before I come to write something about it. |
VheissuCrisis
12.05.12 | 5 absolute minimum. What Menawati said about growers too though. |
YoYoMancuso
12.05.12 | i listen 3 times before rating and 5 times before reviewing, but if it's a particularly long and/or hard to digest record that number may go up to 10 or 11. |
ILJ
12.05.12 | Depends. If it's a group whose sound I have pinned down like Between the Buried and Me I'll generally give it three or four and feel comfortable. Otherwise at least 5. |
Trebor17
12.05.12 | Damn you guys are fast
It takes me forever to "get" an album |
theacademy
12.05.12 | depends on whether there r a lot of tracks on the album
iff too many tracks than i dont even listen once |
Calc
12.05.12 | i listen to it once as I watch TV and text, absorb it completely and empty it on here...
prolly why i suck. |
Ignimbrite
12.05.12 | minimum of 3, usually 6-10 |
breakingthefragile
12.05.12 | Twice for me lol. I don't really see how it would take a minimum of 5 listens to form an opinion on an album. |
IpodMastery
12.05.12 | Depends on the record, but it's mostly a combo of how long versus tracks versus how easy the album is to listen to. |
klap
12.05.12 | to "get" an album - i either like it or i don't. sometimes that takes longer than others. sometimes it doesn't happen at all |
wabbit
12.05.12 | real talk:
who on staff has written a review of an album they haven't really heard? |
Trebor17
12.05.12 | Modest Mouse are my favorite band and I didn't even like Lonesome Crowded West or Moon & Antarctica until like 7 listens |
wabbit
12.05.12 | Yeah I'm the same. It normally takes me a while to "get" an album.
However I can tell if I dislike it rather quickly. |
Polyethylene
12.05.12 | Minimum of 5, anyone who considers their opinion fully formed prior to that is an idiot |
IpodMastery
12.05.12 | http://www.last.fm/music/Until+Death+Overtakes+Me/_/Funeral+Dance+(Extended+Full+Ambient+Version)
I mean how many times would you be willing to sit through this, knowing it's just one track from an album that has other lengthy tracks. ; ] |
wabbit
12.05.12 | no it depends on the type of music.
Like a bob dylan album takes a while to digest cause it's like interpreting divine scripture.
But by the end of a frank turner album you know ever word to heart and 5/5.
You also have bands like Merzbow where you essentially only listen to the album once and it's really cool but you aren't going to listen to it again for a very long time. |
pedro70512
12.05.12 | Some albums are harder than others. The Seer took several spins, which ended up being like a week. I do a lot of live albums, so I have to know the original versions first, which takes extra time. For me, 10 is a minimum because I do a fair bit of close analysis and try to understand the artist's intention and context. |
toxin.
12.05.12 | depends
wrote my three days grace 1.5 review in 1 listen + a few random listens to songs because it was so digestible and so immediately awful
latest Anberlin one took me ~10-15 listens, and I had to listen to the closer (which is a definite grower and I knew it) about 25 times
It really is just if I feel comfortable enough with the music, which depends on an album per album basis |
Funeralopolis
12.05.12 | Usually 2-3 listens for the entire thing, and a bunch of listens for a few particular songs. |
klap
12.05.12 | Yeah I'm the same. It normally takes me a while to "get" an album.
However I can tell if I dislike it rather quickly.
so, you just have no opinion of an album for 6 listens and then on the 7th you're like hey i guess i DO like this |
Cygnatti
12.05.12 | trebs' new review is gonna be a 2/5 of the next kyary album D: |
Trebor17
12.05.12 | OK so for example, I heard Lonesome Crowded West once and it was like in the 3 to 3.5 range. Now a lot of albums I hear are in this range, but for some reason I kept going back to it, there was something there, I knew it would grow
And grow it did, from a 3.5 to a 4 to a 4.5 to a 5
Basically I mean I can like something on the first listen, but it takes awhile to love it
I've never 4.5 or 5d anything on the first listen |
wabbit
12.05.12 | Actually pretty much. I remember just being completely apathetic about fugazi then one day.
ONE TWO THREE REPEATER!
But at the same time I know that Kendrick Lamar's new album is awful just by looking at the album art. |
wabbit
12.05.12 | I can't believe I agree with Trebor so much. Except I 5ed Love, Ire and Song on my first listen before photosynthesis started. |
klap
12.05.12 | lol |
bloc
12.05.12 | Usually about 5 to 6 times |
fireandblood
12.05.12 | I don't actually listen to them, just kind of guess what they sound like based on pictures and hope for the best |
Hep Kat
12.05.12 | you guys like...i don't even know. why do you all have to be so like...what is the fucking WORD
i'm too high to think of it but you all suck except klapper and whoever else i like tl;dr thread |
MO
12.05.12 | 5-10 listens
...but i've only done 5 reviews and they are mainly for things I know a lot about |
Cygnatti
12.05.12 | "And grow it did, from a 3.5 to a 4 to a 4.5 to a 5"
that's how I felt like with the Graduate's last album. Only it began as a 3/5 first. |
bungy
12.05.12 | I try to get the gist nobody listens to the shit I review so it doesn't matter |
