07.03.12 | Steve Hackett was one of the first guitarists to use the tapping technique, long before Eddie Van Halen. |

07.03.12 | I believe that the genesis of the technique could be traced back as far as the days of the bard.
For Western Europe I am referring to the 13th-15th century, for Russia I am referring to the late 1960's. |
rockandmetaljunkie
07.03.12 | Van Halen himself has said that he took the technique from a guitarist who used to watch Billy
Gibbons. Gibbons's style evolves a bend and a hammer-on pull-off vibration all over the bended string.
But Gibbons didn't invent tapping. I think EVH took Gibbons technique and took it a step further. The
reason he wanted to do this, was that he was a trained musician in classical music and he wanted to
make use of his piano experience over the guitar. |

07.03.12 | I read somewhere that Hackett claims he came up with the technique when he joined Genesis in the early 70's when he was trying to play a guitar part similar to what Tony Banks was playing on keyboards. |

But seriously, I always thought that Eddie came up with tapping because he was inspired by Allan Holdsworth and his hands were too small to play the way Allan did, so he tapped to get around it |

07.03.12 | It's pretty common knowledge that tapping was around long before Eddie Van Halen but he is credited with popularizing it. I don't think it's possible to know who started it due to the length of time string instruments have been around. |

Agreed. I'm not saying Hackett invented it, just that he was probably the first guitarist to become famous for using it. Although obviously not as famous as Eddie Van Halen would become several years later. |
