Vesper 04.28.11	Not really. Besides severely limiting what you can listen to, just because a release isn't groundbreaking doesn't make it generic or bad. Alternatively, just because something is original doesn't make it good by virtue of being unusual. (At least, it shouldn't... happens a lot, though.) This is pretty much in line with my views on artists and writers, plenty of whom are clearly influenced by predecessors or blatantly steal ideas.

But if a band is original, and makes music I like, I'm probably gonna be a pretty big fan of that band. So yeah, I guess originality is pretty important for me. But the ones I'm very familiar with (Refused, BtBaM, DEP, At the Drive-In) all rely on familiar tropes, even traditional ones in some instances, as much as they do on innovation. Playing in a defined genre like these guys makes their music much more intriguing, much more vital than any ultra-experimental band that strives mainly for originality.
