Nintendo just made fun, enjoyable games. Feel like that's lost now. |

11.13.15 | N64 over PS1, but PS1 was amazing too... probably the only PS honestly I care about.
But yeah Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Kirby 64: the Crystal Shards, Pokemon Stadium, Majora's Mask... etc. etc. |
Tunnelvision
11.13.15 | Good point.
Did anyone ever play Iggy's Wrecking Ball? |

11.13.15 | N64 is the best system for multiplayer bar none... put on some Goldeneye or Mario Kart on now and we got a game going..
But PS1 has the best game of all time with Metal Gear Solid so.. |

11.13.15 | PS1 as I never owned an N64, which I look back on and kinda regret. Still, the amount of hours I spent on the first 3 Spyro games is more than enough to convince me that the PS1 was great. |

11.13.15 | Symphony Of The Night [2] is my favorite non sports game. Also, NFL Gameday was incredible for its time.
Therefore, PS1 |
Atari
11.13.15 | N64 but I do have fond memories of playing crash bandicoot at my friends house all the time because I didn't have a ps1 |
Angelboros
11.13.15 | They were both great consoles at the time, although I had more fond memories of the N64 than I did the PS1. I'll be the elephant in the room and say that Pokemon Stadium was the first Pokemon title I ever actually experienced in full, but I did acknowledge the GB games beforehand. Speaking of the N64, Rampage: World Tour was a shit ton of fun. In retrospect, South Park (the game, not the show) was sort of a guilty pleasure.

11.13.15 | N64 won that generation. PS2 won against the Xbox and Gamecube. The Xbox 360 took the last generation against the Wii and PS3 and I'd say the PS4 is leading the current Generation Race. |

11.13.15 | Really tho? PS1 had Crash, Spyro, Rayman, MediEvil and plenty of other very popular kids games. |

11.13.15 | PS1 was great, but N64 is easily my favorite system of all time. The Zeldas, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Super Smash Bros., Banjo-Kazooie, and then all the just really fun games like 1080 Snowboarding, Pilotwings, Bomberman 64, Donkey Kong 64, AND Golden Eye and Perfect Zero. Just an unbelievable collection of games imo and im sure im probably still missing some great ones

11.13.15 | I kinda like the uniqueness of the N64 controller. 360 is my ideal controller. |
sonictheplumber
11.13.15 | really i guess it depends on what youre lookin for, n64 is the best for platformers cause shit like banjo and mario 64 obviously is better than garbage like spyro and crash, but as far as serious non-nintendo gaming and rpgs and shit ps1 is best. |
Nazzadan
11.13.15 | Rare won Nintendo that generation with its racing games and collectathons.
That's not to say PS didn't have it's 10/10 classics. |

11.13.15 | I have both systems hooked up right now. I must say N64 has some of the best games ever but I think it clearly lacks in the amount of quality titles the PS1 had.
N64 just didn't have enough good fighting games and RPGS for me where the PS1 imo has too many to name. I can see the argument for either system but PS1 is definitely my favorite due to all the rpgs and games like Tekken 3, MGS, and Resident Evil.
I will say as far as multiplayer goes N64 wins by far. |

11.13.15 | ps1 cuz it has more than 10 good games. honestly the n64s aged poorly; the sound quality is garbage, almost every game is choppy polygonal bullshit, and the controller sucks. mgs was better than oot back in 1998. |
Wadlez
11.13.15 | ps1 is the better system, n64 is gonna win cause of nostalgia and i mean it is great but most games for it suck.

11.14.15 | a lot of people here seem to be blinded by nostalgia, maybe. if you go back and play some of these N64 games, they do not hold up much if at all (goldeneye controllers are absolutely abysmal). not to say there aren't some that hold up very well (majora's mask and ocarina of time come to mind).
with ps1, many of the quality games did not age at all in terms of mechanics and general player control/response. tekken, final fantasy, castlevania, and many others hold up pretty damn well.
in all honesty, this becomes pretty biased based on what you grew up with. of course, I'm sure not everyone here is a ~16-26 year old male, but I wouldn't doubt that that is the majority.
on the topic of best consoles, however, the answer will always be PS2 and Super Nintendo. you can have your own subjective choices of course, but with all the factors that make systems great, those two just destroy objectively. not saying there wasn't any amazing progress with the other consoles, of course. N64 brought the 2D --> 3D jump perfectly, and the introduction of "Z-targeting" was mind boggling. PS1 introduced and perfected dual thumbsticks immediately.
sorry for rambling, but there are just a lot of factors to consider, and it is a topic of interest. |
Sinternet
11.14.15 | was not around for SNES but PS2 has to be the best console ever made.
But I don't think how a console holds up today is a good way of measuring them as technology and game mechanics change so much. It's a lot better to compare games at their release or in the next 5 years or so as the industry hasn't evolved as much in that time. The fact PS1 games hold up well today is great and all but at the time who knew what the future of gaming would be like? The N64 style could have become the standard and then it would have gotten the same argument. |
sonictheplumber
11.14.15 | ive never been a fan of crash or spyro sorry. honestly the only "Serious Gamer" guy i know who likes spyro and crash only likes them because he didnt play mario first. |
Asdfp277
11.14.15 | n64 has higher highs, ps1 offers more variety, but both are great
i'd choose both tbh |
evilford
11.14.15 | MGS is better than any N64 game |
Asdfp277
11.14.15 | well actually, but that's one title

11.14.15 | ps1 HARD
ff7-9, re 1-3, gran turismo 2 etc |

11.14.15 | both have amazing games, but they're definitely on opposite ends of the spectrum. not even comparable, really. |
beefshoes
11.14.15 | The only bad thing about MGS is the lack of enemies.
There are seriously only like 15 guards that re spawn. The rest of the threats are limited to security cameras, dogs, and turrets. Nonetheless, it was wicked for 1998.
MGS 2 improved upon it in almost every way. |
Asdfp277

11.14.15 | Banjo Kazooie was fucking life growing up so I'm going with that

Source
11.14.15 | PS1 has Metal Gear Solid, so PS1. |
Source
11.14.15 | Although N64 has Doom 64 and the Turok games so I guess it's actually pretty close. |
FirstStrikeIsDeadly
11.14.15 | I have zero nostalgia for the PS1 and I mostly play Nintendo anyway so I'll have to pick the N64 (which gets bonus points for having Ocarina of Time and Super Mario 64) but the PS1 had some awesome games on it too, like Symphony of the Night, Spyro, and Final Fantasy VII. That being said, they're both such good systems that the superior one really depends on your personal preference. |
user
11.14.15 | "That being said, they're both such good systems that the superior one really depends on your personal preference."
this, exactly. both incredible systems. |
Dis_Con_Nec_Ted
11.14.15 | PS1 had great games no doubt about it. The N64 had Super Mario/Kart 64, Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask and 007 Goldeneye/Perfect Dark though. |
DominionMM1
11.14.15 | "SNES"
well obviously
|
Slex
11.14.15 | i mean it's hard to beat Super Mario World, the DKC games, Link to the Past, and Super Metroid for quality, but N64 and especially PS2 has a bigger number of masterpieces and also great to good games |
sonictheplumber
11.14.15 | if you think snes is a bad system you must have only played like, wheel of fortune or some shit |
user
11.14.15 | "N64 has a bigger number of masterpieces and also great to good games"
haha, what? SNES is easily the most important console in terms of influence and its ability to spew out classic after classic. you may like mario party 2, but I certainly wouldn't call it a "masterpiece."
|

11.14.15 | I realize that may have come out snotty or mean, so I apologize for that. |

11.14.15 | it's all good lol, i'll admit i'm only going by the games I've played and I feel like i remember more great games from N64 than SNES. That being said, I wanna give a lot of love to 2 criminally underrated SNES classics... Cool Spot and Earthworm Jim. Those games are the shit |
