10.29.13 Random 10 For October '13

Random 10 For October '13

I have eclectic taste and a lot of random crap, but probably not nearly as much of either as I rthink and *certainly* far less than the inevitable troll that comments on this. So, in a rmeaningless quest to see what the heck these list things are all about, I'll post 10 random ralbums and tell ya what they make me think of. Which might not be about the albums at all - rwe'll see! Anyway if it's fun, I might make it a regular thang.
1Big Wreck
Albatross

Thank you thank you thank you thank you Ian Thornley for making it worth
throwing money at your Thornley career. I kept telling myself "It's ok. This
Thornley stuff is just as good. It'll grow on me." And some of it was pretty good.
But a lot of it was full of what-in-the-actual-fuckitude. I read somewhere that
when they were writing this album they had no idea whether the band on the
cover would be Thornley or Big Wreck. Then they listened to it and were all "Hey,
that's what we used to sound like!" Yes. Yes it is. (Well, close enough.)
2Alice in Chains
Black Gives Way to Blue

Confession time: this was the only band of the Seattle Four that I never really
listened to and never really liked, aside from the singles. I liked this one, though.
I played the hell out of "A Looking in View" on Rock Band.
3Disturbed
The Sickness

I haven't listened to this in years. Really, once you get a new Disturbed album,
there's never any need to go back to the previous one. I mean, I do, but I don't
*have* to. This album makes me think of high school. I remember delivering
papers and singing along to Draiman's ridiculous "OO AH AH AH AH" thingies and
making all the dogs in the neighborhood bark. I developed a ridiculous obsession
to track down all the b-sides for this. I still hate looking at the cover.
4Stone Sour
Come What(ever) May

A great sophomore album, aside from the ballads. I still get "Hell & Consequences"
stuck in my head sometimes - that chorus is genius.
5Alter Bridge
AB III

The only bands that gets away with naming their albums this way without anyone
really caring are Led Zeppelin and Ratatat. I get the feeling I am the first person
to put those two bands in the same sentence. Anyway, this album wasn't their
best, but had some *great* tracks - I'll happily listen to "Isolation" or "All Hope Is
Gone" or "Still Remains" any day.
6 Iron & Wine
The Shepherd's Dog

Ah, one of those albums I ripped from the library and never listened to, really.
Maybe putting it on this list will force me to get around to it? We'll see.
7Copeland
In Motion

I used to do a thing back when there were used CD stores. I'd go in, and more-or-
less randomly choose a CD from the $5 bin that looked interesting. It's an awful
way to judge an album, but for $5... what the hell? And I'm sure I'm not the only
one who did, it was totally fun. And I was usually pretty lucky. I didn't always find
amazing things, but I don't think I ever hated anything I bought that way. Anyway,
I discovered Copeland that way. Not this album, but a previous one. I listened to
them both a bunch of times. And I couldn't tell you what any of the songs sound
like, really.
8Sevendust
Home

I used to love listening to this on headphones in church.
9Barenaked Ladies
Barenaked Ladies Are Men

I loved this belated 2nd part of the double album; if you ask me it's way better
than Barenaked Ladies Are Me. Yeah, it's way poppy and radio-friendly, but damn
if it isn't *fun*
10Incubus
Light Grenades

Oh, Incubus, if you had just stopped here, you might have missed the edge of the
cliff. I stayed with you as long as I could. I latched onto you from Fungus Amongus
and enjoyed the ride all the way up to here, defending you against the haters as I
went. This album is pretty good. There's almost none of who you used to be in it,
but there was still plenty of potential. But this is my last stop, fellas. You'll have to
go on without me.
