I just think he relies on CG too much. Granted with a story like LOTR you can't help but use it but even still. Like, everytime it was just a straightforward scene it always just felt like a prelude to an action sequence. His camera placement and editing (far too many cuts in any one scene) is atrocious. And even though I don't care that he changed the ending of The Two Towers and put some of the events of The Return Of The King in the second part, if you're going to spend your entire movie simply gearing up for the Helms Deep siege the last thing you should do when you finally arrive at it is not cut away to trees swaying in the forest.
Plus adding in the sequence where everyone thinks Aragorn is dead wasn't necessary, especially if you're going to show how he survives and returns before you show the other character's reactions to his possible death is just idiotic. And how he spends three movies telling the story only to have Frodo and Sam arrive in Mordor and then cross it in about 10 minutes is a joke (pretty sure in the book it was like a month) |
Mordecai.
07.21.11 | yeh pretty much deviant. still a fanbitch for these movies though. |

07.21.11 | I give him credit and have huge respect for him for putting it altogether and everything, but unlike other movies where you might have 1 or 2 assistant directors, he had about 10 all shooting parts of the movies for him. He isn't the only one who should be getting the credit for the films |

07.21.11 | lol shit, sorry forever. I suggest 3, it has all the dwarves.
@Deviant: I can see where you're coming from and sometimes the CG can be a bit distracting, but I think he did a good job of capturing much of the emotion and magical sort of feel that comes with LotR. What I think will be different here is that there isn't so much story to cram in, and that he's given himself two movies to explore everything that he wants and will Hopefully do justice to the source material, which is one of my favorite books. Your points are all valid, but I can dismiss most of it just because of how massive and fantastical it feels and how I can't watch all three without having tears in my eyes by the end of Return of the King. It's more of the feeling it gives me, more than the actual film integrity if that makes sense. |

07.21.11 | That's cool and I can understand that. I am a little dubious though that there is going to be a second film. Is he just stretching the book out into 2 films and adding stuff in a long the way (like when Gandalf fucks off all those times they'll show where he goes?) or is the first film going to be The Hobbit and the second to be a mix of The Silmarillion and stuff written by Jackson himself to tie it all together with LOTR? I remember reading articles that mentioned both possibilities |
foreverendeared
07.21.11 | I think it's just splitting the Hobbit in two, nothing added. If you recall, a LOT of shit happens in the Hobbit, they could easily make it into three movies without adding anything in. That's what you have to realize with LotR as well, the studio only gave Jackson one movie for each book (they were originally only giving him one movie for all 3) and I think they did a brilliant job cramming so much into 3 movies. |
Slum
07.21.11 | Jackson and Guillermo Del Toro were thinking about adding in elements from the Salmarillion into the movie, but I don't think they had the proper rights to do so. So they're doing The Hobbit completely, splitting it into two parts, and I think (repeat, think) they're adding a few elements to help it lead into Fellowship. A lot of people from LotR are reprising their roles to help it all tie in |

07.21.11 | Unlike most people my age (early 20s, grew up with Harry Potter), I was much more sad to see the LotR trilogy end than I was to see Harry Potter end, even though I do like the series.
Actually, I still haven't gone to see HP7... hm. |
AngelofDeath
07.21.11 | I rather liked it. Though, I do agree somewhat about the ending feeling a little rushed.
The Hobbit movies will rule. Pretty sure. |

07.21.11 | "(early 20s, grew up with Harry Potter)"
Same, though after the first book I stopped caring and started thinking it's crap. Instead, my uncle got me watching Chaplin movies and Hogan's Heroes.
I also liked LOTR pretty much, that it's not a comparison to the books should be obvious. Though I gotta say I would also have liked to see the stuff before with Morgoth and all that other blogues in a movie. |
Hyperion1001
07.21.11 | Yeah i heard he had Del Toro working with him in pre-production for costume and creature designs and shit like that, which is an awesome sign because i love Del Toro for not fucking up his movies with bullshit CG effects where they aren't needed. |

07.21.11 | lol hp7 was a disappointment for you

07.21.11 | "he had Del Toro working with him in pre-production"

Hyperion1001
07.21.11 | Too bad he didnt stay on for the rest of the film, but at least his influence is in there. |

07.21.11 | lol Ire you're brilliant. Del Toro did a lot of the writing if i'm not mistaken |
Vesper
07.21.11 | For something like LotR, with an author who could probably describe a tree for fifty pages, I thought the movies did a pretty good job of limiting CGI, especially in things closer to the camera (costuming and weaponry, for example), so that it holds up pretty well. Most movies that used CGI on a similar scale look a lot more dated almost a decade after release than LotR does.
As far as the choppy editing and abundance of action sequences, that was probably more due to expectations of most viewers expecting a fantasy epic crammed into three hour segments, not actually watching nine guys traveling for months and months with the occasional battle here and there. Hopefully, stretching The Hobbit into two movies will allow for more of that meandering, hah. |
FrankRedHot
07.21.11 | It will be probably just as, if not more, overrated than LOTR's trilogy. |
Slum
07.21.11 | Yep probably and that's alright with me |
Wolfhorde
07.21.11 | "costuming and weaponry,"
Costuming - yes. The designs of the weapons weren't bad but it's interesting to notice that there are reproductions that are kind of better. (just look at the film/literature inspired swords by fableblades)
That being said, I also think The Hobbit will be pretty good - though probably overhyped. |
Vesper
07.21.11 | Yeah, that's definitely true, Wolf, but those have a lot more work put into them as custom-made swords than movie-props that need enough to look good and not drive up the budget. WETA did make a point of not using blacksmithing techniques that wouldn't have been available, at least (although who knows what elves/dwarves were supposed to be capable of, hah).
Definitely over-hyped by the thousands of LotR fans who've been waiting for this... but at least I won't get my Facebook feed flooded with statuses about it for days like with HP7. :P |
Wolfhorde
07.21.11 | I know, of course it's not necessary I'm simply saying it's interesting to see that there are designs that both surpassed the "original" in looks and obviously functionality. (Which is of course not an issue in movies, though I'd wish they'd take up a bit more of the original fighting style)
Well, then you defenitely have the wrong "friends", girl. (Hell, I don't even know people in my age caring about Harry Potter) |
Vesper
07.21.11 | Lol, it's not a lot of my friends. Just the few Potterheads are very, shall we say, enthusiastic (but relatively under control, compared to other HP fans I've seen).
LotR fans are just more sensible, it seems. Might have something to do with the reading level of the material compared to HP, hahhh. |
