Tommy Bolin is one of the most underrated guitarists of all time. He has played for a number of different of artists, as well as releasing two highly acclaimed solo albums, covering a variety of different musical styles. This is a list of what I feel are 20 of his best songs. List excludes any material from posthumous releases (of which there are many) with the exception of #20, which I feel is too important to leave off.
Crazed Fandango* - An excellent jazz fusion track that was recorded during the Teaser sessions. Song appears on the recently released 'Definitive Teaser' reissue as well as on a number of compilation albums. There is also another version of this song called Smooth Fandango.
Sup bro, I can definitely seeing you digging this guy. His fusion playing is particularly impressive so I suggest checking out the tracks from Billy Cobham's Spectrum (1, 6 & 11) and Alphonse Mouzon's Mind Transplant (4 & 7). I also highly recommend his solo album Teaser.
Very nice JT. I was trying to find out all the stuff he was on because of all the session work he did but it looks like you just saved me a lot of hassle.
Thanks omni. The only full album he played on that's not on this list is the other album he did with James Gang (Miami), I'm yet to give that one a proper listen but I've heard it's not as good as Bang.
I think that's the case with a lot of people. His playing on Come Taste the Band is great but it's not until you listen you listen to his other stuff that you realise just how good he was. I can definitely see you digging some of his jazz fusion stuff as well as his solo work, particularly Teaser.
