Nu-metal Perspective: Then And Now

something I stumbled upon: rhttp://twitter.com/#!/FrankiePalmeri/statuses/104172157201952768
1Limp Bizkit
Significant Other

I'm obviously not a lasting by-product of the late nu-metal craze but it seems now more than ever a reemergence of the style and attitude is coming back from those who never got over it. For better or worse, I was an angsty adolescent when such bands as Limp Bizkit and Korn appeared to rule the world. I remember being only ten years old when I was introduced to Three Dolla Bill Ya'll and was instantly hooked due to the fact it was nothing I had ever heard before. The content was definitely something a little kid would blindly feel rebellious listening to and I found myself instantly hooked to the album.
2Korn
Follow The Leader

I still find myself spinning a few old nu-metal records from time to time out of pure nostalgia but I can't lie and say it;s as awesome as I remember it. The older I get the harder my ears find a reason as to why I ever thought some bands sounded good in the first place. Typically an iconic (yes I use that word in this case loosely) period in music still retains artistic merit but why did nu-metal age so poorly for me.
3Deftones
Around the Fur

Perhaps it is what people claimed it to be all along, a fluke movement. I'm not sure if it was always a joke but if it was I don't think I'm alone in being oblivious to the politics given my youth. At risk of sounding like a dweeb, I can't deny the impact a collective bunch of acts made on me back in the day. My first show ever was when I had just turned thirteen and it was no minor affair. The Anger Management Tour 2000 was a dream come true to me because as far as I was concerned Limp Bizkit and Eminem were gods.
4Snot
Get Some

It's safe to say a stadium show at that age with all the larger than life theatrics only reassured my thoughts that I had truly stumbled upon an experience I'd always cherish. In some regards this is still an accurate statement. I'll never forget that show and though I look back and cringe at certain acts I used to religiously support, I still hold that night fondly for what it meant to me in that moment.

What you're first exposed to is usually a roll of the dice out of your control and it's not a big secret it depends heavily on a number of factors that varies for every individual. I think it?s kinda cool how such childish songs as Break Stuff can transport me back to childhood where the memories the song sparks matter more than the actually song itself.
6Slipknot
Slipknot

It's easy to look back now and laugh at how silly the premise was of some of these groups but for what it?s worth there now remains a "so bad it's good" mentality. I don't think I'd change my musical arch if I had the chance because shortly after junior high came to a close I saw myself distancing away from a fading scene into a slew of other exciting genres.
7Taproot
Gift

If anything, I appreciate the 90's alternative greats I was fed before embarking on my own nu-metal hoopla more now because of those bands I once loved. I find it odd how acts like Third Eye Blind and The Smashing Pumpkins have taken over in relevance despite how little impact they made on me during my transition into becoming a teen. I guess it could shine a light on the reality of the talent that went into them versus some of the chart toppers in nu-metal.
8System of a Down
System of a Down

There are always exceptions to the rule because the Deftones are as strong now as they were back then and have somehow eluded turning into a former shell of themselves. It also begs the question that if they were able to roll with the punches and adapt then where did the other acts who road along side of them fumble the ball. I'm sure we can all draw our own conclusions but I doubt I'm alone in wishing certain bands from that era would just accept their fate and bow out gracefully. For those who can't relate to my story it will clearly be for a different reason other than it taints fond memories no matter how naive.
9Papa Roach
Infest

This naturally brings me to a controversial view I have about this whole nu-core uprising we're slowly seeing come to fruition. History repeats itself in confusing cycles and I believe it's the same formula for these young impressionable kids growing up listening to bands like Emmure, who lets face it, are this generations Limp Bizkit. You have this wave of simplistic music with immature lyrics that's easy to buy into for pissed off kids that don't know much about real music yet. Hopefully they'll one day look back with the same tongue in cheek nostalgia some of us have about nu-metal of yesteryear.
10Mushroomhead
XX

I'm not saying I agree with what's happening right now but I sorta understand it and besides, it'll be a thing of the past before we know it. It's not hard to get swept up and forget we all probably started off somewhere embarrassing. In a way I can relate to where Frankie is coming from, as dumb as it may be to a majority. I just don't know if I would start a band centered on it or grasp how the novelty hasn't worn out. Then again, if a band inspired him to create his own, no matter how shitty, that offers the opportunity to live a dream I'd love to have then who am I to judge, even though I will. Oh contradictions.
