04.11.11 | ehh, it depends. there are some artists/bands that make their image important because they're theatrical or trying to make a statement and such. then there are some artists where the music speaks for itself and nobody gives the slightest fuck what they look like. you dig? |

04.11.11 | Depends. If I knew nothing about A7X and I saw a picture of them I would immediately know not to listen to them. I've always had the (loose) philosophy that the best bands look like real people. My two faves are Radiohead and Thrice and they totally fit that bill. Of course they're on the trendier side but all in all they just look like real people. |

Pretty sure legitimate band simply means they're a group of artists who release music. Whether or not you or anyone else doesn't like them doesn't make them any less "legitimate". Your praise for a band is not a requirement for legitimacy |

04.12.11 | I think in popular music image is nearly as important as the music itself. In more obscure music image is a complete non-factor, like there are some musicians/bands where fans of their music wouldn't recognise them.
But certainly in pop. That's why alot of modern pop artists with any longevity need to constantly reinvent themselves, in terms of their look and their sound. When people tell me Lady Gaga's music is so weird I think alot of that has to do with her image cos musically that doesn't sound out there to me at all.
It's a bit less rigid in hip hop, punk, metal and indie but there's still a stereotypical image for all those. |

08.04.11 | Someone else already brought up the point that some bands make their image matter. KISS is a good example Puzzles brought up--their image, the way they look, the lifestyle they lead, is a huge factor in what they do. Some bands are huge because they look like rock stars.
But in cases when the band themselves don't specifically make the way they look an integral part of their act, my opinion is more in line with Josh's:
"To me, it isn't important. But if a band isn't good, and they look ridiculous on top of it, it makes it worse for me" |

08.04.11 | Depends. Some (most) bands aim to make the musical equivalent of getting drunk or watching a movie about people in love. It's just a way to pass the time. Obviously image isn't going to be a huge factor here, although it would be counterintuitive to present yourself in a way that challenges social norms if your music is all about embracing them. In the same way, it's only logical that music which isn't about that to be made by people who present themselves differently. If a death metal band is made up of guys in drag, they're obviously doing it as a gimmick so fuck them. |
AliW1993
08.04.11 | As a rule, no. Some people, for example, say that much of The Sex Pistols acclaim was due to their image, but I love them because I think they wrote great songs, I couldn't care less that they pioneered the whole punk look.
However, image can be a useful thing to draw on in some cases. For example if a band is really really bad and has a fairly extreme or ridiculous image it provides another corner from which you can lay into them. Eg, Black Veil Brides. |

08.04.11 | Seriously, guys, don't be dishonest and say you don't care about a band's image when you guys throw around homophobic slurs at scene bands on here all the time.
I usually don't care to look up what bands look like (metal bands aren't usually worth looking at, anyway, hah), but there is still a certain expectation of what a band would look like based on their sound, even the "normal" looking ones (as in, I'd totally expect Thom Yorke to wear T-shirts and shit).
Image probably isn't as big an issue with increasingly digitalized music, but it was certainly a huge selling point, combined with the aesthetics of album packaging. |

08.04.11 | But you see, with bands like the shitty scene bands, the bad music is more or less a reflection of the bad image and vice versa. |
