Hyperion1001
06.04.14 | "the problem is getting into genres that have transformed so much"
yeah ambient was the hardest to pick just 3 for that very reason. composers like john cage, phillip glass, and steve reich were obviously extremely important to the genre but in the end i felt like where ambient is now (see: substrata) owes far more to the tangerine dream style that it does to any of those composers, even though they are still definitely important. |
Hyperion1001
06.04.14 | oh yeah i forgot hip-hop, i was actually gonna do that one. i would probably make mine.
1. NWA - Straight Outta Compton
2. Wu-Tang Clan - 36 Chambers
3. Madvillain - Madvillainy
i feel like that sort of encompasses the major trends that have emerged in hip-hop over the years, even though biggie and 3 six are both awesome |
PitchforkArms
06.04.14 | for sure man
and beloved genres like metalcore and post-hardcore have been made into completely new things. so if you were to do the genre defining albums for those, do you choose from the classics or....? |
PappyMason
06.04.14 | For IDM I would put in The Black Dog - Bytes. |
Mort.
06.04.14 | "and beloved genres like metalcore and post-hardcore have been made into completely new things. so if
you were to do the genre defining albums for those, do you choose from the classics or....?"
yeah thats a good point, but i guess for genres where there have multiple iterations or "waves" then
you would choose whatever bands you think represents that wave the best for each wave?
|
Kman418
06.04.14 | screamo is like
saetia - a retrospective
pg. 99 - document #8
orchid - chaos is me
duhhh |
Hyperion1001
06.04.14 | for sure, bytes is easily one of my favorite albums, but it still lies frequently in the early 90's ambient techno sounds that were formative for IDM, but not really fully melded into what the genre would become later on. for that style i would probably rank it like this.
1. Aphex Twin - SAW 85-92
2. The Future Sound of London - Lifeforms
3. Black Dog Productions - Bytes |
SpiritCrusher2
06.04.14 | metalcore is Slaughter of the Soul
jk |
Hyperion1001
06.04.14 | "but i guess for genres where there have multiple iterations or "waves" then you would choose whatever bands you think represents that wave the best for each wave?"
thats exactly what i did for black metal. 1,2 and 3 are first, second, and third waves. |
PitchforkArms
06.04.14 | @Kman418 - there are so many screamo albums i love it would be tough. Im hard pressed to not include Envy or City of Caterpillar |
Kman418
06.04.14 | there's plenty of screamo albums than a retrospective and chaos is me but if we're talking about what defines the genre it's definitely those three
list would be v different if it was just my favorite albums |
PitchforkArms
06.04.14 | So I think metalcore would look like
Converge - Jane Doe
Coalesce - Functioning on Impulse (Or Botch -We are the Romans)
Killswitch Engage - Alive or Just Breathing (ughhh) |
Kman418
06.04.14 | i thought jane doe calculating infinity and we are the romans are like THE 3 metalcore albums |
PunchforPunch
06.04.14 | 15 should be Tranny Hunger tho |
PappyMason
06.04.14 | @Hyperion1001
Yh, good point. |
DikkoZinner
06.04.14 | Good calls on the DM |
evilford
06.04.14 | cool idea good stuff
yeah to add to it I'd do-
prog rock -
pink floyd - animals (even tho dark side is my fav album, animals "defines" the genre better
yes - close to the edge
rush - hemispheres
sludge metal
neurosis - through silver in blood
eyehategod - take as needed for pain
melvins - gluey porch treatments
thrash metal
megadeth - rust in peace
anacrusis - manic impressions
coroner - no more color
|
SharkTooth
06.04.14 | Doom metal:
Master of Reality

Dopesmoker
Honorable mention: Dopethrone |
evilford
06.04.14 | progressive metal -
meshuggah - destroy erase improve
psychotic waltz - a social grace
queensryche - operation: mindcrime |
Hyperion1001
06.04.14 | good stuff for doom, although id replace epicus with nightfall |
SharkTooth
06.04.14 | They're both interchangeable imo,
|
NeroCorleone80
06.04.14 | Epicus defines the genre better |
WellFedWhiteMale
06.04.14 | D-Beat
Discharge - 'Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing'
His Hero Is Gone - 'The Plot Sickens'
Death Side - Satisfy The Instinct
From Ashes Rise - Nightmares
Post-Hardcore
Fugazi - Repeater
Quicksand - Slip
At The Drive-In - Relationship of Command
Hot Water Music - Fuel For The Hate Game
|
CK
06.04.14 | Ambient needs more Steve Roach.
|
Hyperion1001
06.04.14 | i love steve roach but that style is more or less covered with the TD album |
Wadlez
06.04.14 | Love the Boards IDM choice, not so fond of the other 2. |
Gwyn.
06.04.14 | "Dopesmoker
Honorable mention: Dopesmoker"
??? |
Hyperion1001
06.04.14 | but regardless if whether or not you like it, confield is the defining IDM album and still the pinnacle of the genre |
SharkTooth
06.04.14 | @Gwyn
I confused Dopesmoker with Dopethrone, what with the similar genre and 'Dope' at the beginning of either name |
Wadlez
06.04.14 | well that is like totally your opinion bro :D.
Seriously though love those albums, I would just have a different top 3. |
Hyperion1001
06.04.14 | im interested to see your 3, i thought you didnt like the other two and i kind of worded it in a snarky way, kind of hard to make things come off the way you want them too without vocal inflections sometimes haha |
Wadlez
06.04.14 | No worries, I also confused genre-defining with favorite. I'm not as sure as my 3 genre-defining, but favorite IDM would be
Geogaddi
SAW 85-92
Beefcake - Drei |
DikkoZinner
06.04.14 | Doom genre would have to include Born Too Late |
Hyperion1001
06.04.14 | cool list, SAW isnt really IDM in my eyes its even more ambient techno that some of the proto-IDM stuff that came out during the AI years. even at that those albums are more important to IDM than SAW was, as good of an album as it is
i actually havent heard that beefcake album though ill have to check it out. |
Yotimi
06.04.14 | I think you need 4 albums for idm and ambient. The whole 90s idm sound has to be represented even if it did bloom from ambient techno. And for ambient these three don't cover the whole harsher glitchier side of ambient (hecker, fennesz, frost, cantu-ledesma, whitman, etc) |
Wadlez
06.04.14 | i actually havent heard that beefcake album though ill have to check it out.
Good! I think you will enjoy it. |
Inveigh
06.04.14 | I might switch out Altars for Consuming Impulse, but the dm list is a good one. I'm not as well versed in the other genres you did.
agreed with ford's three for sludge, for sure. i got one
southern metal
Down - NOLA
Corrosion of Conformity - Deliverance
Acid Path - Paegan Terrorism Tactics |
Hyperion1001
06.04.14 | @yotimi yeah, i agree for the most part. that was one of the main ideas of this list, can you accurately define a genre in just three albums? the result seems to be "some, yes, others, no" haha |
joomisy
06.04.14 | wow, huge list obviously |
Trebor.
06.04.14 | emo:
cap'n jazz - Shmap'n Shmazz
Mineral - The Power of Failing
American Football - American Football
screamo:
Saetia - A Retrospective
Envy - All the Footprints You've Ever Left
Orchid - Chaos is Me
hardcore punk:
Black Flag - Damaged
Minor Threat - Minor Threat
Bad Brains - Bad Brains |
CK
06.04.14 | I feel like while All The Footprints is a slightly better album, A Dead Sinking Story is more genre-defining |
PitchforkArms
06.04.14 | ^^ i like A Dead Sinking Story more ever so slightly |
BertMacklinFBI
10.06.14 | Shoegaze
My Bloody Valentine-Loveless
The Smashing Pumpkins-Siamese Dream
The Jesus and Mary Chain-Psychocandy |
