My 15 Favorite Albums

Do I really need to describe this?
1The Mars Volta
Frances the Mute

The greatest progressive rock album I have ever listened to. As much as I love the Mars Volta, I don't think they will make an album even close to the sublime perfection of this album. It manages to cut out a lot of the ridiculous and more pretentious elements of progressive concept albums and leaves in some truly awe-inspiring moments.
2Tom Waits
Rain Dogs

This is Tom Waits' masterpiece. It sums up his gritty nature perfectly while not sounding contrived and ham-handed for a second.
3Mr. Bungle
California

It's a shame that this is the album Mr. Bungle chose to end on, but it's a very fitting swan song. This album is literally the album that got me back into music. Even ten years from it's release, it's just as fresh and strange as the day it released. It's a testament to Mike Patton and Trey Spruance's musical genius that it's able to cross genres as fluently and seamlessly as it does.
4Tom Waits
Bone Machine

This is definitely one of Tom Waits' weirder albums, but it's one of the finest examples of experimental music. It's a lot darker than his other stuff, but it somehow fits right in.
5Bjork
Homogenic

6Mastodon
Blood Mountain

One of the finest pure metal albums in the modern day.
7Bjork
Vespertine

I'm a fan of pretty much all of Bjork's work, but this album really stands out to me as an unsung masterpiece among her other work. The amount of raw emotion in this album makes it seem much more personal in nature.
8Mastodon
Crack the Skye

This is a much more recent addition, but I feel that Crack the Skye is good enough to honestly put up on this list. It's immaculately produced as a prog-metal masterpiece.
9Neutral Milk Hotel
In The Aeroplane over the Sea

10 Fantomas
The Director's Cut

Fucking brilliant retooling of old movie themes. I don't think I've ever heard a thrash metal version of The Godfather before.
11The Mountain Goats
The Sunset Tree

It feels like I'm getting a VIP tour into John Darnielle's psyche with this album.
12Arcade Fire
Neon Bible

13Faith No More
Angel Dust
