Biggie And Pac

Pac and Biggie have always been my two favorite MC's, going back to 95 when I first heard Ready to Die and Me Against the World. Despite the fact they had a massive feud, I was a huge fan of both, with a slight favor for Pac, and was enormously pissed/affected when each died. I mean, Christ, it was only like 6 months apart. Random thoughts on each.

Ready to Die

As I've probably said many times, objectively I believe this to be the greatest Hip Hop album of all time. I remember buying this while on a youth group retreat in Duluth, Minnesota, and repeatedly bumping One More Chance on my headphones while riding in a car with a group leader who was talking about nothing but religion. Irony?

Me Against the World

My favorite Hip Hop album of all time. The first time I heard this was on a cassette walkman on a 4 hour bus ride for a high school football game. I accidentally listened to side two first, and It Aint Easy, the first cut I heard, is still one of my favorite songs. I thought about the album alot while I proceeded to dominate on the field. Ok I was in 10th grade so I was only on the punt return/kick return team, but I laid some inbreds from Notherern Minnesota straight the fuck out.

All Eyez On Me

While I love this album to pieces, I can't help but feel sick every time I listen to it, because this is where Pac signed his death warrant. Me Against The World was actually an East Coast sounding album, and Pac was pretty much an East Coast guy when it was recorded. All Eyez is when he went full gangsta, and sold his soul to Suge Knight, who I fully believed straight up killed his ass (and Biggie's). More on that later.

Life After Death

It was hard enjoying this album, because it came out right during the time of his death. Much like All Eyez on Me, the first disc is absolute gold and the 2nd has like 3 awesome songs and an avalanche of filler. This was also a major departure from Ready to Die. Similar to All Eyez on Me, it was a much more commercial/bouncy type album, although it did contain its fair share of dark tracks too. Its not Ready to Die, but if it had been shrunk to one disc, the muhfucka is a 5.

Makaveli

See my review on this that explains the shameless cash-grabbing antics of Death Row Records regarding this album and the way it was packaged. I mean, not even two months after Suge had Pac killed, he put this out with several "clues" alluding to resurrection, faking ones own death, etc, that caused an absolute shitstorm conspiracy theory that Pac was alive that still rages to this day. Its a damn solid album though.

Born Again

The sad thing about the whole Pac/Biggie feud is they were once great friends, and the whole thing was actually started by Suge Knight and Puff Daddy. No one knows whether it was a publicity stunt to sell records. I can believe that on Puffy's part, because he comes off as a huge pussy who is only interested in money, but then you have to take into account Suge a Compton Blood who has been indirectly implicated in multiple deaths and physical coersion cases. I mean, Suge was a fucking straight up asshole.

Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z.

What made both of these guys great, especially 2pac, was their introspective side. I think Big was probably a much nicer person than Pac, as Pac was half straight up bastard, but the fucker had so much charisma that when he was being "good" you would probably trust your daughter with the dude. Regardless, Big was better at telling gangsta land fairytales, while Pac was better at being deep, so to speak. If you look at amost all of Pacs greatest moments, they come when he is waxing poetic about the plight of black people or his own internal struggles. Big's greatest moments came during club bouncers and gritty gang tales. They each tried both ways, but each excelled in their own methods.

2Pacalypse Now

As for Suge Knight, you can believe all of the conspriacy theories, but if I had to put money on it I would venture to say he had Pac capped, and then was involved at least indirectly with Biggie's murder in an effort to take the heat off. Its absolutely astounding that no arrests have been made in either case, and that several police officers (who were affiliated with Death Row Records), were present at both murders, and never once questioned. The only thing that gives me pause is the fact that Suge was sitting right next to Pac, which put him at huge risk, so theres that. But its undeniable that Pac and Suge had a major beef right before his death, as Suge owed him almost 10 million in royalties, and Pac, like Dre, was preparing to leave Death Row. Oh, and Snoop Dogg has gone on record stating Suge killed Pac.

Until The End of Time

When comparing the two, they each win in different categories. I would say their flow is pretty evenly matched, as both are among the greatest of all time. Biggie had much better rhymes. Pac had more to say. Pac was way more profilic, and you could argue that might be a bad thing, but the dude recorded like 300 songs in a fucking year, while Big's discog is pretty bare. Pac was also a more talented all around person, as the muhfucker was a damn solid actor too.

R U Still Down? (Remember Me)

The bottom line is Hip Hop lost two of its greatest MCs in 6 months time, which is a God Damn shame. Who knows how great they could have been, or if they would have wound up being a parody of themselves (its more likely BIG would have, as Pac was more well rounded and prolific), but I guess we are lucky enough to have a minimum of 4 classic Hip Hop albums between the two of them. Fucking RIP both of them.
