Top 10 Of 2009

The best the year had to offer. Honourable mentions go to Imogen Heap - Ellipse and RX Bandits - Mandala.
1Russian Circles
Geneva

I didn't really think they could top last year's effort, but Geneva is everything and more. The song writing is tighter, the bass has more of a role, and the additional strings and brass really are a nice touch. Standouts: Hexed All & Melee
2Polar Bear Club
Chasing Hamburg

I gush about this at length in my review, but this is one damn fine melodic punk album. I would absolutely check it out if you like Rise Against/Strung Out/stuff like that. Standouts: Living Saints & One Hit Back
3The Number Twelve Looks Like You
Worse Than Alone

I have to admit this is the first album from these guys that I truly enjoyed, and it sucks because they just broke up a week ago. Oh well! Standouts: To Catch a Tiger, The League of Endangered Oddities
4Johnny Foreigner
Grace and the Bigger Picture

Basically a mix of Bloc Party and Tsunami Bomb, Johnny Foreigner is one catchy indie rock band. This is my vote for sleeper hit of the year. Standouts: Security to the Promenade, Feels Like Summer
5Closure In Moscow
First Temple

A very talented band that sounds like a more polished At The Drive In. Very catchy progressive rock songs with a fantastic lead singer and crazy guitar riffs. Standouts: Vanguard, Kissing Cousins
6Propagandhi
Supporting Caste

Just Propagandhi continuing to be their awesome selves.
7Freelance Whales
Weathervanes

Terrific indie pop that's dense with melodies and sentimentality.
8Lights
The Listening

A nice synth-pop release from a fellow Canadian. This was my also my first review, so keep that in mind when you don't read it. Standouts: Up Up & Away, Pretend
9 Drop Dead, Gorgeous
Hot N' Heavy

I honestly don't know why I like these guys: they're about as generic as it gets, but it's still a fun listen from time to time. Standouts: Killing a Classic, Beat The Devil Out Of It
10Set Your Goals
This Will Be The Death of Us

I really enjoyed this album when it first came out in the summer, but it's since lost some luster. Not a bad effort, though! Standouts: Gaia Bleeds (Make Way for Man), This Will Be the Death of Us.
