|Top 25 Of 2013|
My favourites from this year! Overall, a better year than 2012.
See my review. This gets my nod for best drumwork of 2013.
These guys transformed themselves from a gimmick to real, true art. Endless
Fantasy is expertly crafted and beautifully polished. Out of the whole top 25, I
would recommend this album to anyone.
|3||The Dillinger Escape Plan|
One Of Us Is The Killer
The first album from these guys that I can say that I enjoyed from top to
bottom. They varied their attack this time around and provide a well-balanced
sound, offering plenty of breathing points between the chaos.
See my review.
|5|| ||The Story So Far|
What You Don't See
This album just grew and grew on me. Catchy, emotional, hard-hitting pop
punk with a hardcore edge that I never thought would be in my top 5 come
Sad to see these guys break up, but this is an excellent last hurrah.
|7||Run The Jewels|
Run The Jewels
Another grower for me. Terrific beats coupled with Killer Mike and El-P's one-
two punch makes this the best rap album of the year.
|8||A Wilhelm Scream|
I've been waiting for this one for too long, but the wait was worth it. Lots of
good stuff here, and I hope it doesn?t take another 6 years for the next LP.
See my review.
|10||Minus The Bear|
Better than the first Acoustics compilation. Better song selection and the new
songs are good as well. Really chill, always a good listen.
The Difference Between Hell And Home
It falls a little short of their 2011 effort "The Current Will Carry Us", but this is
faster, heavier, angrier, and an all-around enjoyable listen.
|12||Queens Of The Stone Age|
Their best since "Songs For The Deaf", but a little inconsistent for me. Overall,
though, it?s got some of the best songs of the year. This gets my nod for best
bass lines of 2013 (and some of the most tasteful I?ve ever heard, actually).
This has got to be the biggest surprise of 2013 for me. Never really thought
much of this band, but this album is very consistent with lots of highlights.
I Love You
Really laid back and super catchy. I thought I would get over this album after a
few listens, but I always find myself coming back to it from time to time.
This EP came out of nowhere for me, so I was surprised to see it. The jazz
elements are toned down on this one, but still a really solid collection of songs.
Emotional, raw screamo with an edge. There are enough interesting elements
here that keep it from being monotonous.
|17||The Devil Wears Prada|
A step back from Dead Throne, and the new vocals haven't really grown on me
still, but a decent slice of metalcore with some heavy-hitters.
As with previous releases, TTNG needs time to digest their music due to the
complicated structures and busy instruments. Some songs flourish with time,
but some still stay flat. This gets my nod for best guitar work of 2013.
After being blown away by House of Balloons, everything since then seems so
boring and one-note. Some very good songs on here, but the overall feel is
|20||Tyler The Creator|
A collection of really good and a collection of really bad. Tyler can't really find
his groove through the album, but still a good stab at trying to cut through the
A good, enjoyable cut of hardcore. I only hope for future releases that they
bring a little bit more uniqueness to the table.
Again, like his Odd Future counterpart, there are a lot of highs and a lot of
lows. Very dark at times, so it's very good for a moody listen.
Although I don't quite understand the hype and praise she's getting, this is an
above-average pop album with some of the best pop songs of this year. I'm
really looking forward to how she grows.
|24||Dance Gavin Dance|
A step up from "Downtown Battle Mountain II", but those cleans are a double-
edge sword that still rubs me the wrong way. Still some tight songwriting and
unique take on the post-hardcore genre, but this album is only good in small
|25||Protest The Hero|
Still not a fan of the wank-for-fifty-straight-minutes approach, but I can
acknowledge the talent and the (brief) moments of awesomeness that these
guys bring time after time.
