ReturnOfTheDnor
02.20.12 | I worked part time at a liquor store. I've had the Dogfish Head 120 minute IPA. 3 of them and you're good to go. So delicious. Also the Celebration Ale is good too.
I'd recommend trying Flying Fish Company (Anything made by them is awesome) |
ReturnOfTheDnor
02.20.12 | Also Clown Shoes makes an 18% alcohol brew...it's terrible. But kicks your ass if you drink enough. |
fsharptrit0ne
02.20.12 | hows that clown shoes.
i rec southern tier 2x ipa. had the trappist rochefort 8 the other day. was delicious |
Inveigh
02.20.12 | "Mountain Dew. Kicks beers ass if you ask me."
technically i did ask but i'm definitely not happy with your answer
dan: my issue with clown shoes (indirectly) is that the liquor stores near me all have really old bottles of most of their stuff, like over a year old. so there's quite a few i want to try, but just haven't.
I've had the 120 minute IPA as well, it rules. Just expensive. I'll have to check out Flying Fish, not familiar with them. Wear are they from? |
sniper01
02.20.12 | firestone walker double jack double ipa.
right now that's my favorite beer. one of the best i've ever had. |

02.20.12 | who said klown? Who dunnit? |
killrobotmusic
02.20.12 | Here's a few I've tried recently that are pretty good... don't know their availability in your area.
Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout (Imperial Stout)
Brooklyn Local 2 (Belgian Strong Ale)
Dogfish Head Midas Touch (Traditional Ale)
Dogfish Head Namaste (Belgian White)
Ommegang Seduction (Porter)
Paulaner Salvator (Doppelbock)
Rouge Shakespeare Oatmeal Stout (Stout)
Stone Oaked Arrogant Bastard Ale (American Strong Ale)
Troegs HopBack Amber Ale (Amber Ale)
Unibroue La Fin du Monde (Abbey Tripel)
Victory Hop Wallop (Imperial/Double IPA) |
killrobotmusic
02.20.12 | By the way Dnor if you're looking for something else out of NJ, try the River Horse Hopalotamus Imperial/Double IPA from Lambertville, it's good stuff. Flying Fish makes some good stuff though, they make a specialty beer for the Back Bay Ale House in Atlantic City which is one of the best amber ales I've had. |
Inveigh
02.20.12 | I'm in Chicago so there is a bit of a midwest bias to my taste (Bells, Founders, Metropolitan, Argus, Goose Island) but I definitely try to branch out as much as possible
I'm familiar with most of those breweries but have only had the Oaked Arrogant Bastard out of that list. I'll try some of the others.
drinking a Torpedo Extra IPA right now because there's a bunch of them in my fridge, it's always a solid beer |
killrobotmusic
02.20.12 | Yeah I'm in NY now so I'm pretty well versed with east coast stuff like Ommegang, Dogfish Head, Flying Dog, Brooklyn Brewing Co., and some others but thankfully there's a pretty good selection from all over the country. |
AggravatedYeti
02.20.12 | Left Hand MS is so fucking good & loving that Ruthless Rye too.
I dont think yall get Heavy Seas brews out in Chicago but if you ever see Loose Cannon (purple bottle, pirate on artwork) I think you'll nom in right up homie. So fucking tasty, a floral IPA that is smooth as fuck at 7.75abv. mmmmmm |
Inveigh
02.20.12 | nice sounds right up my alley, I can probably have my local store order it
and dude the Left Hand MS has quickly become one of my favorite beers, I've gone through an
obscene amount of the Ruthless Rye already this season |
AggravatedYeti
02.20.12 | It is easily sippable similar to Guinness in that I cannot house a lot of stouts or porters but both of those are easy going. Granted Left Hand is so much thicker/better but the same idea a sixer isn't that hard to make it through.
|
Inveigh
02.20.12 | exactly I basically treat them like session beers, which is horrible |
ReturnOfTheDnor
02.20.12 | lol I have like an entire fridge full of Sam Adams Lat.48 IPA and Yuengling right now. I should probably get on drinking those. |

02.20.12 | Miller Genuine Draft, or if you're a cheap bitch Lakeport, also Venom-Black Magic |
AggravatedYeti
02.20.12 | yuengling is an excellent bar beer. generally everywhere if available in your area and usually cheap + tasty.

02.20.12 | A few tastees I've had recently:
Left Hand - Fade to Black Pepper Porter (vol. III)
Lagunitas - Little Sumpin' Sumpin'
Lagunitas - Imperial Red (limited edition; totally amazing)
Lakefront - IPA (you should be able to get this by you, eh? Milwaukee isn't too far..)
Bear Republic - Racer 5
Founders - Backwoods Bastard
Founders - Breakfast Stout (Amazing stout)
Founders - Double Trouble (if you like really citrusy grapefruity IPAs) |
Apollo
02.20.12 | Sam Adams Winter Ale is decent
Muskoka Dark Ale
Chimay Trappist Ale
Leffe Brun
Warsteiner Dunkel
Schneider Weiss

02.20.12 | Great breweries listed here (except Rogue), but you should try to get ahold of some of their other stuff. Founders KBS, CBS (goodluck), Better Half - all the premium shit will blow your mind. World class craft beer.
West Coast - Russian River, Lost Abbey, Port Brewing, Ballast Point, Alesmith The Bruery;
East coast - CIGAR CITY |
MartiniKisses

02.20.12 | seconding anchor steam. also the 2012 sierra nevada bigfoot is out now and super fuckin' fresh and hoppy and delicious if you see any in your local beer place grab some i've gone through 2 or six-packs between me and a few bros and every bottle is delicious. |
jredmond
02.20.12 | nah, oberon makes it out to philly atleast. Bells and Lost abbey were the two biggest losses for me (distribution wise) after moving to NYC. |

Satellite
02.20.12 | i'd definitely go with bell's amber ale over fat tire. both are really good, though |
Inveigh
02.20.12 | yeah I love Lost Abbey too. Bell's Best Brown and Imperial Stout are two of my favorites.
I love Founders, have tried all of the ones I can find around here (Red's Rye, Dry Hopped PA, Centennial IPA, Dirty Bastard, Porter, Breakfast Stout, Double Trouble). I really want to try the Curmudgeon, CBS and Backwoods Bastard but seen them around. |
Inveigh
02.20.12 | yeah Bells amber is better than Fat Tire imo
really liked the Snow Day seasonal from New Belgium though |
Tyrannic
02.20.12 | i know this seems like a stupid statement, but i've never seen bells in the chicago area. i'll be checking my neighborhood obscure-beer place tomorrow though. |
snerefedsav
02.20.12 | left hand milk stout is pretty delicious. not really a beer connoisseur but the evil twin yin and yang beers are really good, especially if you do it like a black and tan |
jredmond
02.21.12 | Bells destroys new belgium. Also, not sure if Kuhnhenn is around your area - but everything they make is legit as shit |
Inveigh
02.21.12 | I'm really not a big fan of most of New Belgium's stuff outside of Ranger as a session IPA and the Snow Day. Their Abbey ales are ok too.
Tyrannic: where are you in the Chicago area? I see Bells beers everywhere (grocery stores, small liquor stores, Binny's), it shouldn't be too hard to find. |
sniper01
02.21.12 | new belgium brews are always hella drinkable but are nothing more that decent in terms of flavor/complexity. i'll take.
any sierra nevada offering instead any day. |

flying dog makes it |

it's probably hard to find where you're at, but if you can get your hands on a Stone Imperial Russian Stout, Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout or a Founders Breakfast Stout, definitely don't pass it up (since it seems like you're more into the darker stout/porter style) |

liledman
12.10.12 | How much do you guys pay for this stuff in the states?
In Melbourne, at cheapest, I can get a 6-pack of Sierra Nevada pale ale (getting a bit popular here at the moment) for $22. Seriously hampers my efforts to explore international microbreweries and whatnot.
If you ever come across Australian beers, or happen to be in Australia, James Squire is our everyman's/most dependable microbrewery, and Mountain Goat is my personal favourite. |

ouch. i pay ~$10 for a 6-pack of snpa. less at good liquor stores. that's a serious shame too if most american craft imports are that expensive, and i'm assuming harder to find as well?
"If you ever come across Australian beers, or happen to be in Australia, James Squire is our everyman's/most dependable microbrewery, and Mountain Goat is my personal favourite."
word. |
liledman
12.11.12 | Well we have a great chain of stores which is the cheapest place with the best range, and a large one of these stores is in my town so it's all good. You can find quite a bit of Australian and international, but when it comes to craft beers, only the bigger ones are available, like Sierra Nevada. I've looked for Dogfish Head and a few others to no avail. |

12.19.12 | saving that one for tomorrow actually, I plan on getting nice and toasty between that and my Stone Vertical Epic 12.12.12 brew (for the end of the world, of course) |
omnipanzer
12.19.12 | Epicly lovely brew that, I hope you enjoy it. |
Inveigh
12.19.12 | Rogue generally doesn't disappoint, and I trust your recommendation. I'll report back to this thread with a brew soundoff |
jrm96
12.19.12 | dos equis, tecate, corona, carta blanca, modelo |
Inveigh
12.19.12 | modelo and victoria are the two mexican brews I normally go for but the others are ok too |
jrm96
12.19.12 | the tequilas aren't bad either :) |
Inveigh
12.19.12 | i'm not a big tequila fan, I mean I'm not opposed to a shot of don julio, patron or whatever, or a margarita but I'm mostly a whiskey or gin drinker when it comes to liquor |
jrm96
12.19.12 | awww i was about to give u a huge ass list |
sniper01
12.20.12 | "i'm not a big tequila fan, I mean I'm not opposed to a shot of don julio, patron or whatever, or a margarita but I'm mostly a whiskey or gin drinker when it comes to liquor"
agreed.
"Stone Vertical Epic 12.12.12 brew (for the end of the world, of course)"
same here, it should be a party.
"Idk i can get a proper buzz going on $20 of good beer at a bar, and if I didnt have $20 to spare then I probably wouldn't be getting drunk"
agreeeed. but i'm still a college drinker. |
Inveigh
12.20.12 | so when I poured that Chipotle Ale, it basically exploded everywhere and poured with like 5 inches of head at least. There are tons of giant yeast discs/floaters throughout, to the point of looking like a snow globe.
Did I store it too cold? This happened to an Arctic Panzer Wolf I cracked open the other day too... anyone have an idea? |
Inveigh
12.24.12 | I'm going to make a bold statement, Dreadnaught by Three Floyds is the best IPA in the world (I guess technically it's a DIPA)
But yeah seriously it's the best |
Inveigh
12.26.12 | i'm just going to use this as my 'what i'm drinking now' thread
http://oi48.tinypic.com/21mg0sw.jpg |
halloway
12.26.12 | I scored a bottle of Rogue's Bacon Maple Ale for X-mas. What am I getting into? |
Inveigh
12.26.12 | Never had it, but if there's one brewery I would trust with that specific task, it'd be Rogue |
Inveigh
01.09.13 | drinking a 22 ouncer of Hop Rod Rye by Bear Republic
damn good brew, they call it an IPA but it tastes more like an American Strong Ale to me |
Spec
01.09.13 | Drinking Canadian. Bleh. |
Inveigh
01.13.13 | just cracked my last bottle of Founders Breakfast Stout, leftover from the fall
http://tinypic.com/r/a5dw0k/6
so fucking good |
Inveigh
01.14.13 | just finished off a bomber of Three Floyds Rye'Da Tiger and it was unbelievable. Maybe the best Rye DIPA I've ever had.
just cracked a BridgePort Ebenezer Ale leftover from one of my xmas/winter warmer hauls. Decent, but nothing special. |
Inveigh
01.14.13 | and yes, I know I'm the only one posting here anymore.
what's everyone else drinking tonight? assuming you're all functioning alcoholics like I am... |
Spec
01.14.13 | Sleemans Honey Brown. Also took a lot of codeine and am listening to Codeine. I would recommend it. |
Inveigh
01.14.13 | damn, care to share some of that codeine? syrup variety I assume? |
Spec
01.14.13 | Tylenol 3's actually. |
Inveigh
02.24.13 | Have had some awesome beers over the last week.
Tyranena The Devil Made Me Do It Coffee Porter - 4.5/5
Green Flash Palate Wrecker DIPA - 4.5/5
Lagunitas Sucks DIPA - 4.75/5
Founders Backwoods Bastard - 4.25/5
Oskar Blues Deviant Dale IPA - 4.5/5
also came up on a few bombers of Three Floyds Dreadnaught DIPA (otherwise known as the best beer in the world). It's $12.99 per bomber, but totally worth it. |
ReturnOfTheDnor
02.24.13 | I've had tha Lagunitas before. Stuff absolutely rules. |
Inveigh
03.01.13 | tying one on tonight, so far I've downed a Lagunitas Sucks, Firestone Walker Double Jack, Three Floyds Alpha King and a Three Floyds Gumballhead |
sniper01
03.01.13 | double jack is so good. one of my favorites
drinking a young's double chocolate stout and listening to the men. |
Spec
03.01.13 | Old Milwaukee tonight. Cheap beer hooray. |
sniper01
03.01.13 | brits really know how to stout |
Inveigh
03.01.13 | young's double chocolate is easily one of my favorites in that style, obviously Samuel Smith makes a great one as well. Purchased a bomber of Pipeworks' Jones Dog the other day, haven't tried it yet though. Really liked their Galaxy Unicorn, Standard Issue and Close Encounter.
Tonight I've gone with Lagunitas Wilco Tango Foxtrot, Oskar Blues Deviant Dale and Bell's Two Hearted. It's been a good night. |
someguest
03.01.13 | You gotta love the skunky Two Hearted. A Michigan classic! |
Inveigh
03.02.13 | dude Two Hearted is not skunky at all to my taste buds... just grapefruity, orangey, bitter goodness |
toxin.
03.02.13 | i thought this would be a balls list |
someguest
03.02.13 | It's skunky to me. I'm still a novice beer drinker. |
Inveigh
03.02.13 | if you're still in Michigan you're in a good spot. Bell's and Founders are world class breweries, plus Dark Horse, New Holland and Jolly Pumpkin are pretty great too. you're also not too far from awesome breweries like Three Floyds and Pipeworks. |
someguest
03.02.13 | Sadly, I am still here. Beer is like the only good thing left in this state. Oh, and the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. But that's about it. |
Inveigh
03.02.13 | ah, yes the dunes. Grand Rapids is a pretty cool town, if my memory from the one time I was there serves me. otherwise yeah, michigan's got beer and that's about it |
Inveigh
03.13.13 | drinking my last bomber of Rye'da Tiger right now... sad, but god damn tasty. probably the best rye IPA (or DIPA) out there imo |
someguest
03.13.13 | I haven't had a drink in at least two weeks.
:( |
Inveigh
03.13.13 | on purpose? |
someguest
03.13.13 | Yes and no.
Big person problems man. |

03.13.13 | I'm familiar with those |
Apollo
03.13.13 | New brews kicking my ass:
Howe Sound Pothole Filler Imperial Stout (British Columbia craft)
Beau's Coffee Amber (Ontario craft)
Kostriker Black Lager (German)
Samichlaus (Swiss, this beer is 14%, like a kick in the teeth in a good way)
Beau's Hefeweizen Style Wheat Beer
Lava Smoked Imperial Stout (Iceland, 9.4% delicious, blacker than black coffee)
|
someguest
03.13.13 | The last one sounds really good. |
Apollo
03.13.13 | It's awesome man. Only $5 for a bottle where I live too. |
Melons
03.13.13 | I don't care much for beer.
I enjoy whisky though. |
Inveigh
03.13.13 | downing an Alpha King to close the night
I love whiskey, it is second only to beer in my booze-love ranking
best coffee-ish stout I've had recently was Central Waters Brewer's Reserve Bourbon Barrel Stout. It's 9.5% abv and pure deliciousness. |
DominionMM1
03.14.13 | drinking an old chub right now. mmmmmmm alcolicious. |
sniper01
03.14.13 | pretty things beer and ale project - our finest regards (barleywine 12.1% ABV)
quite a mouthful (as is the flavor) |
Inveigh
03.18.13 | oh damn dominion didn't know you were up on that oskar blues tip. i love dale's, deviant dale's and g'knight, I really need to try old chub seeing as I love scotch ales.
the wife and I celebrated a slightly belated St. Pat's tonight with some homemade corned beef and cabbage, and a bomber of Brian Boru Irish Red Ale.
now I'm sipping on a dark horse double crooked tree. damn good. |
Inveigh
03.18.13 | also sniper i just looked that stuff up, sounds pretty tasty. i've been in a barleywine mood lately. guess it is the season.. |
andcas
03.18.13 | had a chocolate tasting ale that was 10% at some bar. don't remember the name but it was tasty |
DominionMM1
03.18.13 | "oh damn dominion didn't know you were up on that oskar blues tip. i love dale's, deviant dale's and g'knight, I really need to try old chub seeing as I love scotch ales."
yeah the brewery is a 45 minute drive from my place. you need to try mama's little yells pils and the gubna, too if you haven't. |
AngelofDeath
03.18.13 | I don't think I'm ever going to drink anything besides Sam Smith's chocolate stout from now on. |
Inveigh
03.18.13 | yeah I've got a can of Gubna in my fridge now, gonna crack it next time I'm in the mood for an RIS
yesssss Angel Sam Smith makes the best chocolate stout around. the oatmeal is damn good as well.
I tried something recently called Not Your Father's Root Beer by Small Town Brewery. It was 10% and tasted like the best root beer I've ever had. |
andcas
03.18.13 | "I don't think I'm ever going to drink anything besides Sam Smith's chocolate stout from now on"
that was it. good looking out for my trashed memory at the time. |
Underflow
03.19.13 | All I know is is that if you're trashed enough to think Keystone Light tastes awesome, then you're
doing a good job. |
DominionMM1
03.19.13 | keystone doesn't taste like shit because it has no taste whatsoever |
sniper01
03.19.13 | me and the gf split a unibroue terrible for st pattys day along with some irish creme ale in nitrocans i can't remember the name of right now.
the amber ale i brewed is ready, bout to open the first one. |
Inveigh
03.19.13 | nice, I really want to get into home brewing
I just cracked my last Founders Russian Imperial Stout for the year, couldn't hold off any longer. It's probably my favorite American take on the style (although I still haven't had Dark Lord). |
DominionMM1
03.19.13 | have you ever tried old rasputin, veigh? |
sniper01
03.20.13 | @ dominion -- Inveigh: "sniper: yes, I actually have one or two Old Rasputin's in my fridge right now. can't believe I forgot that one, definitely an essential RIS." |
Inveigh
03.20.13 | lol that's awesome. this is one of my favorite threads, people with good taste in music and beer.
drinking my last Hopslam right now, again, wanted to let it mature but couldn't wait. It was bottled on 1/9 and I got it 1/14, I think I've waited long enough.
DIPA and YOB are a great combo |
sniper01
03.21.13 | i always buy cellar beers at whole foods and then i never wait to drink them. i have even tried buying 2 of each so i could drink one and save one but i have no willpower at all it seems. |
Inveigh
03.21.13 | yeah I'm the same way. Just picked up a couple bottles of Founders Curmudgeon Old Ale today and I'm drinking one now, planning on cellaring the other... we'll see if it lasts.
I'm making a trip to Three Floyds brewpub on Saturday for a haul of some Zombie Dust and whatever else they have available for growler purchase. It's going to be awesome. |
Maniac!
03.21.13 | The only good beer I've had is Killian's Red
what's the consensus on that one? |
ffs
03.21.13 | special brew |
MetallicOpeth
03.21.13 | strange brew |
Inveigh
03.21.13 | Killian's Red? I used to like it back in the day, and it's pretty good for a Miller-Coors product. But it pales in comparison to other Irish Reds like Brian Boru or even Murphy's. |
Maniac!
03.21.13 | for a first beer, it was pretty good |
Inveigh
03.21.13 | yes, definitely good for a first beer. I think of Killian's as like a "gateway beer" -- it's good for the transition from stuff like Bud Light into real beer. |
Maniac!
03.21.13 | hah. I skipped entry level |
Inveigh
03.21.13 | that you did. when you're under 21 and the luxury of choice is not on your side, I'd say you did pretty good. |

04.21.13 | drinking a Stone Espresso Imperial Russian Stout and listening to Portal

Winsomniac
04.22.13 | Figueroa Mtn. Hoppy Poppy
Mirror Pond Pale Ale
Red Chair Northwestern Pale Ale

Widmer Bros. Pitch Black IPA

All from quite good breweries. Stone is by far the most well-known, but they mostly live up to the hype. |
Inveigh
05.02.13 | yeah love Stone, we recently started getting Deschuttes here in Chicagoland so I've grown quite fond of Red Chair
just finishing my first (and likely only) Three Floyds Permanent Funeral (collab with Pig Destroyer)
one of the top 3-4 IPA/DIPAs I've ever had |

Suck my balls. yes. Suck my balls |
Inveigh
05.07.13 | last night I got down on a Three Floyds In The Name of Suffering, black IPA collab with Eyehategod. really good beer, but not in the top tier of Black IPAs that I've had (Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous and Firestone Walker Wookie Jack would be in that category).
tonight I'm polishing off one of my other Three Floyds limited release bombers, Rabid Rabbit Saison. slightly less impressed with this one than I normally am with their brews. |
Jesuslaves
