I had both 'In Absentia' and 'Fear of a Blank Planet' for a good half-year before then, and while I enjoyed FOABP enough, it wasn't until that fateful flight that I REALLY got into 'In Absentia', and subsequently, Porcupine Tree. Now I own six PT albums ('Stupid Dream'-on) and they are most definitely one of my favorite bands. All because I listened to that album on a plane ride.
