When it comes to superstars , I think it is the players' decision. Today's basketball players seem "smarter" because of all the different plays and stuff but are definitely weaker mentally and I think that's the main reason they leave their teams so easy. I just hope teams are influenced by San Antonio's example and try to build strong programs where players can flourish.
And yeah, Malone and Stockton won zero championships but Malone is top 5 PF and Stockton arguably the best floor leader. So winning no rings didn't tarnish their legacy. |

06.24.14 | "No, you're wrong. It tarnished their legacy. They'd be held in even higher regard if they had a collection of rings. It cannot be denied."
How did it tarnish their career? Would Malone be the definite top PF or Stockton the unquestionable floor leader had they won a couple of rings? Certainly not for me. A lot of players retired without any rings in the Jordan era and if he hadn't retired for a couple of years Olajuwon would have probably retired without a ring. |
MalleusMaleficarum
06.24.14 | You suggested that their lack of rings didn't put them lower on the totem pole than they would be if they did have a collection of rings; thats what I disagreed with. I think it goes without saying that rings would've added a lot more to the prestige of the Stockton and Malone years, especially since some of those wins would've been over MJ. |
manosg
06.24.14 | Dunno man, I really respect them for their perseverance and strength of character because they decided to stay in a small market team even though they could have easily left. After all, only one team wins the championship each year and their supporting cast wasn't that special.
On the other hand when Lebron calls it a day, those of us who witnessed him play from the beginning will always know that in order to win he had to team up with two superstars in their prime. Because of that, my respect and therefore Malone and Stockton's place in history are unquestionable. |

There's very little denying, that when it comes to pro sports, championships do provide to a players legacy. That Stockton and Malone never won will always be in peoples minds. It does have weight, but isn't everything. Stockton comes to mind as one of the best floor generals of all time. His 15 thousand career assists speaks for itself, and most likely won't be touched. Malone was without a doubt one of the most overall gifted big men of all time. They are both top 20 players all time at the very least, but never won it all. |

RoyalImperialGuard
06.24.14 | LeBron turns 30 in December. |
MalleusMaleficarum
06.24.14 | I'm more-so trying to look at it through the eye of general public, or basketball fans in general. Stockton already ranks as a top 3 PG to me without the titles. But I feel like he would be there for EVERYBODY, right down to the casual fans, if we had some documented footage of him and Malone lifting the O'Brien trophy a few times. The small market of Utah kind of restrains their popularity in a similar fashion to what happens in San Antonio. Duncan is clearly the best PF to play in the last 20 years but you'd never know it if you did a player popularity poll. And that's after a whole bunch of Spurs Championships. The Spurs aren't popular nationally. So, naturally, A lack of titles compounded with playing in Utah had to of slightly impacted their legacy when all was said and done. It doesn't change any of the statistics they individually recorded as players but it certainly alters the public perception. |
MalleusMaleficarum
06.24.14 | So using that comparison of Utah and San Antonio, wouldn't Duncan/Parker's legacy be greatly reduced if you were to take the rings away from them and leave them only with their individual player stats? |
manosg
06.24.14 | I get your point and agree to an extend. If Duncan hadn't won 5 rings he wouldn't be the "best PF ever" and Parker and Ginobili probably wouldn't be as highly regarded. But even after all those rings, I don't think many people would put Parker over Stockton.
Gary Payton was a legend even before the ring with Shaq. Pippen has double the rings that Bird has and Chamberlain has only two but the dude was a nuclear weapon. Great basketball players lose rings because of various reasons. So I definitely agree that rings cement one's place in history and play a role but people tend to overreact and overrated/underrate players because of that. |

Malone and Stockton didn't leave Utah because there was simply no place for them to go to have a better shot at winning a championship in the '90s. They were on a great team but there was a better team around. Adversity is one thing, management incompetence is completely another. |

Having your big 3 at the 1, 3, and 5 seems like the perfect balance of strengths, especially considering each players strengths. In short, the 1 scores and feeds the 3, and Joakim does everything else. I believe they'd play ridiculously well off of eachother, and create fits for other teams on defense. I can't see Melo working in the Houston system. In Chicago, I think there'd be better team synergy, and greater potential for a championship. first of all, Miami isn't going after Carmelo. second of all, I cant believe you would call a team a joke for trying to improve. Thats actually hilarious. Miami needs a PG because Chalmers is terrible and Lebron is tired of having to be the unspoken PG and SF/PF all at the same time. They need a real PG. Norris Cole doesnt fit the bill. I'm all for teams improving dude. That's precisely why I'm tickled by the idea of Melo or another superstar coming to Chicago. I have a huge hate boner for the Heat based on what they've meant in the past, as far as Chicago not having the chance to lift the Larry. I know what they still (probably) mean in that respect. I'm aware of Wade's knees and everyone disappearing on Lebron in this years finals. I just don't see a realistic need for another star on that team to get it done. 06.29.14 | The Jason Kidd situation is hilarious, he's only had one year of coaching experience yet he demands to have a front office role too? A bit ridiculous but he has done well in his first year with Paul and Kevin, they aren't at their finest but they managed to do okay.

best defensive player of his era. Varejao, Anthony Parker was Euroleague MVP I think, and JJ hickson

i coulda swore you said hes had top weapons his whole career. shrug. welker was good but hes a slot receiver. he only got the ring once moss was there too, didnt he?
i mean its kind of common knowledge that brady has a track record of turning average receivers into great ones. he made deion branch and troy brown look like jerry rice sometimes. give me a break, comparing him to matt ryan. lmaao. ryan has been spoiled from his opening day with nothing but big and athletic receivers who can go and get balls. |
MalleusMaleficarum
06.29.14 | brady has been in the league for 15 years and had maybe 1 or 2 "superstar" receivers in that time. ryan has already had 3 at his disposal and projects to have more if ATLs history suggests anything. it displays the different plane the two QBs are on and supports my argument for Ryan being outside the top 10 in terms of talent (obviously not stats) |
GuanoBumbershoot
06.29.14 | I'd say Brady's only had any real elite-level options since the year they had Welker and Moss. Then they drafted Gronk and Hernandez. Hernandez is no longer there for obvious reasons, and Gronk is starting to look injury prone. Last year, Brady's options were two rookies and the revolving door or Amendola and Edleman. Before Welker and Moss, his only notworth receiver was Dion Branch. |
SPRFanOf5H
06.29.14 | Damn topic changed quick.
All I can say is hopefully with Aaron Rodgers' QB coach now the new OC for the Giants that Eli can rebound from his horrid 2013 season. The O-line looks improved from OTAS but time will tell in the preseason to show that. Defensive secondary could certainly rival Seattle's Legion of Boom, but chemistry has to show if there is any chance of them being great. The running game will improve certainly with Rashad Jennings the likely starter, and Heisman finalist Andre Williams will be fantastic for red-zone situations.
Thank god tho New York only went 7-9 in 2013, after going 0-6 I thought we'd lose at least another 6-7 but to finish 7-3 to end last year was nice. 10-11 wins is the mimimal if you wanna reach the playoffs, especially with a NFC East that is pretty much open division title-wise. |

06.29.14 | Brady won super bowls without an even above average receiving core and a good defense. Moss's career seemed to be in retrograde, he suited up for Brady, and they broke records. Welker went from a good slot receiver to an unstoppable one. He slightly changed the landscape of the game with the Gronk and Hernandez hook up. That's pure QB skill and IQ over having elite weapons. Matt Ryan lost his targets, and we all know what happened. |

Inveigh
06.29.14 | if Melo comes to the Bulls, it will be because he's already bought into their overall concepts (i.e. Thibs' concepts) and team chemistry
regarding the QB thing i.e. Matty Ice, yeah he's not top tier. I've watched Jay Cutler for 5 years now in Chicago and there's no way I'm trading him for Matt Ryan. Not that Cutty's elite, just that I think he's still superior to Matt Ryan. |
GuanoBumbershoot
06.29.14 | Gonna make a shot in the dark that your a Chicago native Inveigh.
From the quotes I've read, seems like Carmelo has nothing but respect for Thibs and the wining culture he's created in Chicago. Obviously that doesn't exactly translate to him buying into the concept individually, but it's certainly something. |
Inveigh
06.29.14 | yeah I'm a Chicago guy, I'll be 29 in a few weeks and have lived here since 16 so it's the area I identify with. been a huge Bulls fan my whole life though. I think Melo would be a great fit here (and even more than Kevin Love, for a variety of reasons), but until I see it happen I can't put faith into the idea of the Bulls signing him.
our biggest FA signings in history have been Ron Mercer, Ben Wallace and Carlos Boozer. I'm not sure if it's ownership/management, MJ's shadow, D-Rose not recruiting, cold weather or a combination of all of them, but we're not a premier destination for the traditional NBA star. |

I agree 100% on him being the best fit for the team man. Kevin Love is a double double machine, but we need a pure scorer who can get it done lone wolf at times. That's something I don't quite think Love would solve. Also share your slight distrust of the front office getting a big name in Chicago. I think MJ's shadow played big on not getting James the year we signed Booz. Also think the question mark on Rose might play in, and I'm sure some players are turned off by the idea of Thibs riding them hard everyday. I just hope this is the year where our winning culture and core pieces is enough to lure a big fish. |
Inveigh
06.29.14 | are you from the area dude?
agreed on Love, he'd be a good fit and I'd be happy to get him, but he can't iso (which is something I usually hate about the NBA game, but even the Spurs have more than one guy that can iso on the wing), and we need that. plus he's even worse on D than Melo, he's basically a younger, better Carlos Boozer with a 3 point shot and better passing/court vision (which admittedly, is much better than Carlos Boozer). but he routinely leaves his man on D to pad his rebounding stats and has never been to the playoffs. Melo is a much better fit for the Bulls needs, even if we have to give up Taj in a S&T to get him. |
klap
06.29.14 | you forget to mention that Ryan had a shit o-line as well; Brady's o-line during his super bowl years was always one of the pats strengths. Ryan's line last year (26 TDs, 17 INT, 4500 yds, 89.6 rating) isn't exactly terrible when his lead WR was hobbled all year and he was making due with harry fucking douglas and being harassed by a pass rush every single time. oh and the running game was atrocious - coordinators knew he had to pass, and he still put up numbers |

klap
06.29.14 | thank you. ryan isnt the problem with the falcons. the defense, by far, is |
Inveigh
06.29.14 | I see the argument both ways. you need a strong team around either guy, and they win games different ways. Ryan wins games by sitting back and waiting to strike when the time is right, and can rack up tons of points doing that because he's good at it. Cutler is capable of dominating, or completely losing a game for you. but he's also more capable of leading comebacks and making "moment" type plays than Ryan.
all my opinion, of course. |
Inveigh
06.29.14 | I agree Matty Ice isn't their problem, he's a franchise-level starter (which means he is capable of leading a super bowl offense), and you don't let those go. same reason Cutler isn't the problem with the Bears. |
MalleusMaleficarum

06.29.14 | well yeah definitely considering how much Cutler's been hurt, how unbelievably, you-don't-know-unless-you-watched bad his o-lines have been, and how little help he had in terms of receives/TEs until Marshall got here.
I think they're very close, both borderline top 8 QBs, but I like Cutler a hair more. he's tough as nails and ice cold in the heat of the moment. maybe Ryan is too and I just haven't seen it in the games I've watched. but I love me some Jay Cutler. |

06.29.14 | i probably have a vendetta against cutler for fucking me over in fantasy so many times |

06.29.14 | and yeah chicago's o-lines have been horrendous. Falcons were pretty atrocious last year as well. this will be a good year to compare as bears arguably have the better receiving pair now and both teams upgraded their lines (at least i think chicago did....i hope) |
Inveigh
06.29.14 | Chicago's line last year was actually pretty damn good, even with a rookie right side. They're back together this year so they should be even better, I would project them as a top 10 o-line. also yeah Marshall/Jeffrey plus M. Bennett is as good of a top 3 receiving threat that there is, up there with Atlanta, Denver, etc. so no excuses there either. not to mention Forte.
but if you look at hits per drop back from like 2009-2012, you will see why Cutler's numbers looked really bad at times.
I still have a little love for the Falcons from growing up in ATL, and I still even had some gear through the Vick era. will love watching Hard Knocks this year. |

07.13.14 | "I think Wiggins is overrated. Seems like his upside right now is Shawn Marion; great defense at 3-4 positions, maybe knock down the open jumper or throwdown in traffic on cuts and lobs, but absolutely zero shot-creation."
Interesting take. Personally I think he can/will only guard 2s and 3s. Not even a bit strong enough to guard 4s. I also think you're selling him waaayyyyy short offensively by comparing him to Marion. Yes, Marion had some good offensive seasons, but that was all because of Mister Canada. My point being: Wiggins will be a great offensive threat in the league. |
SitarHero
07.13.14 | All of Marion's 20+ point seasons were with a HoF pg. First Kidd, then Nash. Marion came into the league as a SF and I remember there being talk of him developing into a legitimate SG, but he just didn't develop that way and it later became unnecessary during the small-ball 7 seconds or less era.
I think Wiggins is long and quick enough to guard 1's in a pinch, and maybe switch up to PF against stretch-4's, especially since he's got a pretty decent frame and will probably bulk up. He's already a decent shooter and his shot mechanics are waaaay better than Marion's ever was (although, whose isn't?), but right now he can't dribble with his left hand and I just don't see him with the ability to put the ball on the floor like comparable athletes such as Rudy Gay.
But on the flip side, he's gonna be playing with at least 2 terrific playmakers in Kyrie and Bron, so maybe he won't ever have to dribble the ball, or he might learn from them. |

Inveigh
07.13.14 | yeah summer league performances are rarely indicative of what happens in the regular season. it's more for practice squad players to prove themselves.
that being said Wiggins has the potential to be Tracy McGrady. Or he could be Stacy Augmon/Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Parker is a better ROY candidate, but his future is slightly more certain.
