LaCosaNostra13 08.02.10	Richard Kelly is so praised for Donnie Darko, and I don't get it. The movie was a mish-mash of half-wit ideas that never, ever made sense. I get that movie's leave the audience to their own devices at times, but someone please explain to me WHAT the appeal of that sinking turd is?
Inveigh 08.02.10	Supposedly Kelly took parts of 4 different scripts and put them together without really any intent on giving the movie a singular or linear plot, so really it was a pretty funny experiment to see what teen goths, vampires and wanna be elitists would come up with -- you know how those people are always trying to tell you what the "obvious theme/statement" is in Donnie Darko? Well, from what I understand, this was Kelly basically playing a prank on those people. Like, the theater kids who treat Requiem For a Dream like it's the bible or something.

If he himself said that, it's only because he changed his tune from what he said early on. It only seemed mish-mashed because there were a shitload of important scenes and dialogue left out from the final cut - the "director's cut" or whatever is much more straightforward, less mystifying, and all around even more boringay than the original one.
