08.04.11 | i didn't steal this from philosoraptor, but now that you mention it could work.

08.04.11 | "That's the definition of selfish, chief."
But I do good and generous things for other people to accomplish said feeling of self-fulfillment, which one would typically apply to a giving person, not a selfish one. |

You could have consulted with a grizzly bear and saved me some internet anger.
But here we are. |

08.04.11 | doesn't make you cellfish at all. just means you're driven by gratification. |
Emim
08.04.11 | If you're doing it for self-gratification, then yes, it makes you selfish in that regard. That doesn't negate the fact you're still doing something good for someone else. |

08.04.11 | I don't usually ask people their opinions on things of which I know the answer. |
foreverendeared
08.04.11 | Do you care at all about how you achieve this self-gratification, or are the byproducts inconsequential to you? In other words, if there was a way that you could feel even better about yourself, and it didn't involve helping anyone, would you do it? |
wabbit
08.04.11 | It's selfish but that doesn't make it any worse or better.

And yet the entire time, she was actually hurting the poor. |

08.04.11 | Yeah, but that's partly the reason why anyone does anything for anybody else. No one DOESN'T like the feeling they get from helping somebody. |

08.04.11 | Their happiness makes me happy.
Case in point, at work a few weeks ago (i work at a golf course), it was hot as hell out and there were two guys walking the course, i'd seen them around, they're good people. the water tank normally by the fifth hole was empty, so i took two cold waters out of the cooler, paid for both since the boss was around, and shipped them out to them. their happiness (which was enormous) made me happy. they gave me $5, which I didn't want, but one of the guys practically pried my fingers apart and stuffed the money in there.
i don't know if i did it because i wanted to feel warm and fuzzy by doing something nice, or whether doing something nice was the real goal.
weird shit, i need to go to bed i think. |

That is not true at all. Altruism is a very real thing.
"Their happiness makes me happy."
Then you aren't doing it for entirely selfish reasons. |
