10.30.09 | My friends complain I know too many bands, I respond to that by finding another 5 or so that I like. |
YouAreMySilence
10.30.09 | Its ok, no one knows any of the bands I listen to.
If I put on anything that screams they call it emo, and if I put on any post rock they call it boring.
But every now and then I'll show a babe Mono or like Sigur Ros and they'll be like "that changed my life." But too bad no one goes for the sensitive guy. Now I'm just bitter.
And apparently the whole damaged thing doesn't work with chicks in high school. |
Dougie
10.30.09 | Yeah ^
Listening to indie/folk and giving some mixtapes of them to some girls i know always works wonders.... if ya no what I mean haha.
Unfortunetly a lot of my mates are either into scene shit, or listen to quite poppy stuff... Though thankfully they are open to my offerings of new music!
My Rec: Carus
hahaha |
eclectic
10.30.09 | The only guys at my school who are damaged are insanely obsessive, so it certainly wouldn't work at mine, lol.
Yeah, it kinda sucks that girls are all like "we want a sensitive guy who understands us" and then they ignore the few guys that are actually like that.
In terms of the musical stuff, nobody at my school listens to anything past pop, rock, and metal, those are the only genres I've come across. |
cirq
10.30.09 | its okay to like radio pop. i do |
fromtheinside
10.30.09 | do you want recs from the albums specifically or any?
for thrice i wouldn't start with beggars especially if you're hoping for them to be heavy. go artist and illusion. make sure you listen to vheissu. personal favorite thrice song is 'the earth will shake'.
axe to fall is probably a great place to start with converge its relatively their most accessible record. favorite converge song (right now) 'homewrecker'. |
Schizophrenik
10.30.09 | yeah, sensitive doesn't work on chicks anymore. their all into douchbag guys who think their really cool because they have long hair and skateboard and can play guitar |
eclectic
10.30.09 | lol, at my school if you're "damaged" then you get a LOT of hate, trust me, I have seen it.
The only genres at my school are pop, rock, and metal, I would be very surprised if I found someone that listens to Sigur Ros.
And nobody likes the music I give them to try and broaden their horizons, most of them are very close-minded which pisses me off to no end. |
YouAreMySilence
10.30.09 | Some radio pop is definalty rad, and if you don't your just kinda arrogant. I don't mind some "fun" music but I can't listen to too much. It's when people aren't open to new shit that bothers me.
Oh and
1) Last Light
2) Prequel To The Sequel
3) Silver Wings |
eclectic
10.30.09 | Ok, weird, annoying double post because it told me it hadn't worked but it had.
Thanks for the recs guys, will check those out ASAP.
|
eclectic
10.30.09 | I don't mind some of the stuff on the radio, but what those girls were playing was like Jo-Jo material (anyone remember her? my point exactly) |
YouAreMySilence
10.30.09 | Well I got like a handful of Junior High chicks listening to Trespassers William.
Yah, I don't play up the "damaged" thing.
Yah they're all like "I want a nice, sensitive guy" but all they want are fag skater kids witha grade 7 sense of humor. |
eclectic
10.30.09 | Dude, I've been rejected by a metric fuckton of those girls who say they're "not ready for a relationship" and then go and date the fag skater kid a week later. |
YouAreMySilence
10.30.09 | Story of my life haha.
Amen to masterbation. |

10.30.09 | Hahaha, sex is like a good card game, if you don't have a decent partner you better have a great hand.

10.30.09 | Lucky man Dougie, thinking of marrying her one day? |
YouAreMySilence
10.30.09 | God damn this is a bad topic to be involved in while listening to Sleepingdog.. |
eclectic
10.30.09 | Hahaha, since I've never heard of Sleepingdog you have piqued my curiosity.
Care to elaborate on your previous statement? |

10.30.09 | I have a few other things I have to do right now, but I'll get around to that ASAP |
YouAreMySilence
10.30.09 | Haha ok thats probably for the best, now I doon't have to stay up to wait to get your opinuin on it.
When you do you though def give me a shout to let me know what you think. One of my favorite records ever. |
eclectic
10.30.09 | Will do mate, goodnight then I guess, lol |
YouAreMySilence
10.30.09 | Haha night : ) |
Masochist
10.30.09 | Thrice's strongest point is the fact that you discover just how diverse they are AFTER you become a fan of the stuff that sounds exactly the same; it makes them exciting to get into finding different things even after you've decided you liked them.
So...try "The Earth Will Shake," "The Whaler," "Beggars," and yeah, "Silver Wings."
Converge...the only song by Converge I can stand to listen to is "Jane Doe," which is sad, because it's probably their "softest" song (I wouldn't know).
And music...fuck. I get a lot of both love and hate for my music tastes; love, because I'm pretty tolerant and can listen to so many things; hate, because I'm not a fan of popular things (I especially can't stand modern mainstream rap, which definitely gets me ridiculed because I'm black).
I'm all right at getting people into certain bands, though--I've gotten a girl into Jeff Buckley, I've gotten a few people into Thrice, I got a girl into Nickel Creek, I've gotten a girl into Brand New, and I think I got a girl on here into mewithoutYou. I also got my roommate into Dredg, Mae, and Days Away...but I've found that generally, it's so much harder to rec to guys than it is for girls.
I WANT to get someone into Sigur Ros. I want someone to look at me cynically when I hand them that blank-ass c.d. with parenthesis cut out of the cover, and then go home, listen to it when the time is right, and come back and tell me that it was the most beautiful thing they'd ever heard. That would be awesome. |
eclectic
10.30.09 | "generally, it's so much harder to rec to guys than it is for girls."
Very true, a perfect example is my metalhead friend who only likes the heavier stuff I give him, anything else and he refuses to hear a second of it. I am friends with several girls who adore both the softer stuff and the heavier stuff, but no guys I know will listen to it.
Dude, imagine the weird looks I get when I play Regina Spektor and get told to "turn that shit off" and then I switch it to Opeth, or Devildriver and everybody's like "that's fucking sweet, but why the fuck do you have that AND Regina Spektor?" |
Masochist
10.30.09 | Hahaha, I did the VERY SAME THING at work! We happen to have exactly one Regina Spektor song in our video playlist (I work at a bowling alley/laser tag/arcade/poolhall/hell-hole place), and I put it on. My coworkers literally told me, "turn that shit off!," and then switched to Cute Is What We Aim For instead.
But that's okay...I like Regina Spektor enough, and I've tried hard not to take it personally when people don't like the stuff I rec them (I gave Dredg to one of my coworkers who HATED it because of the singer's voice). I've got my music tastes; they've got theirs...they won't always match, but oh, well. Their loss ;-). |
mutatedfreek
10.30.09 | Sucks man, just gotta learn to ignore the idiots.
Converge: Jane Doe, BTBAM: Selkies: THe Endless Obsession, Thrice: Red Sky.
(None of these are on the albums you listed) |
eclectic
10.30.09 | Haha, yeah, same here. I think if I took it personally I wouldn't have any friends, lol |
Dougie
10.30.09 | Haha Marriage! Don't tell her that... I'm only 19! lol
Shamles plug of new review being up... |
Deviant1769
10.30.09 | @Masochist: You may have got her into MewithoutYou, but that's a bigger win lol
I've got the opposite problem with my girl. She's got some great tastes (Opeth,Gojira,Thrice,Converge), but then she also listens to Cannibal Corpse.... |
eclectic
10.30.09 | I wasn't expecting stuff from the albums I listed, they're just the only ones I know because they've been featured this year.
Thanks for the recs though.
And I am learning to ignore them, even if it is hard when they're in most of my classes and couldn't stfu to save themselves.
Hahaha, fair enough Dougie, I'll keep that one under wraps for now.
Deviant, on the one hand you're lucky she's into that kind of stuff (I only know a few that will listen to ANY kind of harsh vocals), on the other hand, however, Cannibal Corpse are just messed up. Dilemma, lol |
Masochist
10.30.09 | I know a few girls who can dig the harsh vocals...but a question: what type of music do you find yourself recommending most? |
Deviant1769
10.30.09 | I tried to convince her to delete it, wouldn't budge on it |
Masochist
10.30.09 | Hahaha...guess I'll answer first:
I find myself rec'ing post-hardcore stuff--Brand New and Thrice are easy to get into, if you give someone the right song (don't have them listen to "The Artist In The Ambulance" and think that's all there is to the band). Mae is, too, if you're into Pop-Punk at all. |
eclectic
10.30.09 | Hmm, a tough one, most probably the softer stuff like folk, acoustic, rock etc. That's just 'cause I prefer the softer to the heavier. Not saying heavy is bad, I love heavy, but I've grown up with soft and don't quite have the taste for heavy that other people my age do.
Seriously, anything acoustic or relatively quiet I will overplay to shreds. |
eclectic
10.30.09 | Perfect example of my kind of recs is Sufjan Stevens, I always try to give indie bands coverage.
Unlucky Deviant, lol, keep trying, but only if you don't risk losing her. |
Deviant1769
10.30.09 | All depends on the girl I guess
First date with my girl I passed my iPod over and played her Bringer of Plagues by Divine Heresy!
Couple of girls I know dig the music, but can't do the vocals
Got my ex into Dream Theater though haha, but yeah usual Brand New, Sigur Ros, Thrice. |
Alligator
10.30.09 | " then go and date the fag skater kid a week later."
Don't even get me started! |
Masochist
10.30.09 | "All depends on the girl I guess"
True...I don't think I've ever given a metal or -core rec to a guy OR a girl. Usually, as I said, it's all indie or post-hardcore. But I HAVE gotten an older roommate into Norma Jean by playing their more melodic stuff ("Disconnectie," "Liarsenic"). He didn't like them before because he heard no melody...and this was a guy who listened to Heaven Shall Burn. |
Deviant1769
10.30.09 | Maybe something off of Anti Mother might've worked? |
eclectic
10.30.09 | I love the fact that this has more comments then most people get in a day, but its still in the top spot on the front page, and they're decent sized, intelligent comments too.
"I don't think I've ever given a metal or -core rec to a guy OR a girl"
Same here, it just seems more natural to rec the softer stuff.
|
fromtheinside
10.30.09 | oh yeah, and listen to 'wild ox moan' off of coalesce's new album and you should be sold. |
eclectic
10.30.09 | Ahh, I've been waiting for somebody to mention Coalesce.
Thanks heaps man. |
Skimaskcheck
10.30.09 | they sound like douchebags man, enjoy the fact that you listen to better music then them, and chin up! |
eclectic
10.30.09 | Thanks, I always try to, on both counts.
I have to admit though, I don't know where I'd be without Sputnik, you guys have been absolute bloody legends these past coupla months, even the guys everyone thinks are douches, they're a lot better then half the people I know. |
OllieS
10.30.09 | radio pop is so fucking awful |
BigTuna
10.30.09 | The only stuff I get to rec is pop-punk 'cause one of my friends is into that. So I give him good stuff instead of All Time Low etc. The rest of the people I know listen to country or mainstream rap, you know Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne, and the like. If I even tried to rec something heavy to them they'd shoot me in the face. Ah well. Hang in there eclectic. |
BigTuna
10.30.09 | Oh and
Dark Horse for Converge
Disease, Injury, Madness for BTBAM
At the Last for Thrice
Those songs are all off the albums you got. Not my favorites by the artists, but the best off those albums imo. |
BassDemon333
10.30.09 | Ugh I can't stand radio pop. Fucking horrible.
Listen to "Dark Horse" off of Axe to Fall or "Jane Doe" off of the album of the same name for Converge....both great tracks if you are looking to get into them I think. |
strikey
10.30.09 | Haha, enjoyed reading this. I'm the most musically inclined person in my group of friends and it's sometimes a bit irritating to have the same argument about why Alexandra Burke's new song being catchy doesn't make it good music and doesn't mean you'll be listening to it in 2 weeks.
I find myself rec'ing indie-pop and pop-rock most of the time, because it's accessible but still varied enough to be interesting. A fair amount of post-rock, too, but it depends who I'm talking to. Oh, and it is my experience that girls dig indie kids. Js. |
Transient
10.30.09 | lolol all of my friends are fags as well, listen to:
Converge - The Broken Vow (not their best song but accessible and it's fun to smash shit to)
Between The Buried and Me - White Walls
Thrice - Deadbolt (or Paper Tigers)
DO ITTTTTTTTTT |
Electric City
10.30.09 | dark horse by converge |
Titan50
10.30.09 | I usually rec Manic Street Preachers, only because they're my favourite band. Most of my friends listen to metalcore, modern indie and post-hardcore/modern emo. I usually rec ATDI and Brand New as well as the Manics
Not to toot my own horn, but I am the most musically inclined person out of my friends. People do sometimes call my music boring and pretentious (Radiohead especially), but I just tell them how amazing Radiohead are. I once had a Facebook argument after I told someone how the top 10 was NOT "amazing" for once, and someone commented saying that I would only like it if it had more metal LOLOLOLOOL. Debate about how popularity =/= quality ensued |
Transient
10.30.09 | Chicks don't like guys with good tastes in music, I wear my Circle Takes The Square shirt all the time and no girl has ever dropped to their knees and fellated me on the spot. At least not yet.
Also I've gotten lots of my friends into good music you just have to ease them into it instead of throwing them into the deep end. One of my friends who only ever listens to top 40 stuff now listens to Elliott Smith and Brand New ^_^ |
Titan50
10.30.09 | People just see my Rolling Stones shirt and assume I'm a classic rock faggot
They then look at my skinny jeans, converses and fringe and go WAT |
hitman02011
10.30.09 | Converge - Grim Heart / Black Rose
Between the Buried and Me - Selkies: The Endless Obsession, Mordecai, White Walls (Selkies is their most popular but White Walls is my favorite)
I don't know about Thrice. I have to get into them myself. |
Masochist
10.30.09 | Heh heh...I will GLADLY toot my own horn and say that I have a much wider musical range than nearly any of my friends (except one), but no one would guess it just by looking at me, especially since the only two band shirts I have are Green Day's 'American Idiot' (a Christmas present from long ago) and Bad Religion's 'New Maps of Hell'.
Oh, well. Girls don't exactly swoon over my music, since most girls I know either listen to radio pop or Country music (forget ye not that I'm in Lubbock-fucking-Texas). |
FigNewtns
10.30.09 | story of my life bro. around here, a few people know who Bon Iver is, but that's pretty much the pinnacle of my city's musical taste. i have a few friends that go to another school who are real into the Deathwish bands, but they're way into the scene & will only listen to the real abrasive stuff. sucks. |
FigNewtns
10.30.09 | on a side note, it's pretty disheartening when the musicians at your school listen to shittier music than you do. :( |
SlightlyEpic
10.30.09 | Yeah, I once had this argument with this kid about screamo and he kept going on about how he's a "musician" and that means he must know better than me about music and he just wouldn't accept that I'm right. Hell he wasn't even going on about the normal faux-screamo bands, he was trying to persuade me that Cradle of Filth are screamo and going on about 'different octaves of screamo' and it was the most retarded argument I've ever had. |
Deviant1769
10.30.09 | Lol at CoF being called screamo
Screechcore maybe haha |
SlightlyEpic
10.30.09 | Haha, kid was seriously retarded. On a sidenote, my girlfriend listens to Brand New and a bunch of good hardcore bands which is cool, been trying to get her more into skramz recently without much success though. |
