08.04.09 | totally retarded
|
Titan50
08.04.09 | MCR more influential than Pearl Jam, Priest, Kinks, RHCP, Deep Purple and The Cure?!
gtfo |
Klekticist
08.04.09 | MOAR OPETH. |
robertsona
08.04.09 | wtf is this list lol |
CrazyGreg
08.04.09 | List is a fail |
hitman02011
08.04.09 | Blink 182? Korn? |
ClearTheLane
08.04.09 | dont be that rude guys, the list is alright... Maybe something like blink-182 was influential.. in a bad way. |
Chewie
08.04.09 | some of these aren't infuential, Bloc Party? |
Titan50
08.04.09 | Arctic Monkeys are more influential than Bloc Party |
scyther
08.04.09 | Top 20 is solid. |
Waior
08.04.09 | except that Rush basically influenced every prog band after them |
thebbqshrimp
08.04.09 | I would absolutely make an argument that blink-182 was a very influential band. There have been countless waves of new pop-punk bands to emerge in their wake, imitating their style, sound, and attitudes.
But, yeah... there are definitely some glaring omissions. Rush is but one. |
shindip
08.04.09 | ^ u mean King Crimson? |
Satellite
08.04.09 | This list is actually pretty comprehensive. Not sure how you can say Kraftwerk is more influential than Radiohead, N.W.A. and Metallica, though. |
thebbqshrimp
08.04.09 | Also missing some pivotal pioneers of punk. You have The Sex Pistols and The Clash, but I would argue that bands such as Black Flag, Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys, etc. were far more influential in what is known today as punk. |
accompliceofmydeath
08.04.09 | ^^^Black fucking Flag. |
thebhoy
08.04.09 | list is full of fail, especially the second half. This is also very much just Western music. Most of these bands are great for sure, but most of them are hardly influential. To get a fully complete list is almost impossible, because pretty much everyone just makes their own variation on other sounds.
Plus this list doesn't go beyond like, the 1930's I think. |
Ryanarchy
08.04.09 | I'm sure the Top 20 would be good but 21-75 sounds pretty random. |
Benzum
08.04.09 | no B.B King = Fail |
Yotimi
08.04.09 | List is pretty good for the most part, I'm not getting all the hate. Hard to argue with the top 20. Some changes I would make are:
New York Dolls s/b here especially since they influenced the whole Sex Pistols sound.
Nirvana brought grunge into the mainstream but the sound originated more with Dinosaur Jr.
Needs more influential prog like King Crimson and Rush.
Also needs Buddy Holly, Brian Eno, and Beastie Boys.
I also agree that Kraftwerk is very influential as they pioneered electronic music. I even agree that Blink and Korn should be here. Good list.

Benzum
08.04.09 | Son, if you ever say another derogatory word about Elvis Aaron Presley in my presence again, I will kick the living shit out of you. |
fromtheinside
08.04.09 | i'm having a hard time understanding 56 and its above; johnny cash, korn, eminem actually i don't see how they're ahead of any of whats below them... =/ |
fromtheinside
08.04.09 | ^56 and what* its above |
Yotimi
08.04.09 | Linkin' Park is influential. They didn't necessarily provide a positive influence but they are influential to alot of the rap/rock stuff (saliva, P.O.D.). Plus Korn pretty much started nu-metal. |
Benzum
08.04.09 | and Bloc Party? What the fuck? |
thebbqshrimp
08.04.09 | He wasn't arguing whether they were influential or not, he was arguing that they are far less influential than many of the bands that are listed below them, and with that I would have to agree. Eminem, Notorious B.I.G, Pearl Jam, The Cure, Johnny Cash... all FAR more influential. |
thebbqshrimp
08.04.09 | Comment was @ Yotimi. |
PaddyPooHead
08.04.09 | ok Bloc Party shouldn't have been there I got a little lazy towards the end. |
Chewie
08.04.09 | Joy Division |
Yotimi
08.04.09 | Damn, Joy Division, I meant to put that one too. Also, Sunny Day Real Estate. And yeah, I'd agree LP are less infl than The Cure and Johnny Cash, but not Pearl Jam and Notorious BIG. Remember, whether they are good or not is not the question. What did B.I.G. do that 2Pac and Dre didn't already do? Be fat and rap? |
Yotimi
08.04.09 | The more I think though, there are a lot of ommissions - Aphex Twin? |
thebbqshrimp
08.04.09 | Biggie was a contemporary of 2Pac and N.W.A. so he was doing it at the same time. And he had a completely different style than both of them. But yeah, Joy Division is for sure missing. And Aphex Twin (by far the most innovative and influential artist in electronica ever). |
Titan50
08.04.09 | The Prodigy and Daft Punk |
R6Rider
08.04.09 | list is pretty accurate |
AliW1993
08.04.09 | Rage Against The Machine influenced pretty much every rap/nu metal band in existance, so they should be here really.
Also Venom were largely responsible for both thrash and black metal.
Green River started grunge.
The Melvins were hugely influencial in sludge.
Kyuss had a huge affect on stoner rock/metal.
The Offspring were just as influecial to pop punk as Green Day.
Could also have Black Flag, Replacements, Dead Kennedys, Rites Of Spring, Bad Brains, Botch... |
fromtheinside
08.04.09 | the offspring > green day |
Titan50
08.04.09 | Faith No More |
AliW1993
08.04.09 | yeah i forgot FNM |
fromtheinside
08.04.09 | madge should also be higher. |
PaddyPooHead
08.04.09 | yeah i toyed with Rage Against the Machine but just sort of forgot about them after a while, looking back i should have put them in ahead of Bloc Party at least |
FadeToBlack
08.04.09 | Venom
Death |
EVedder27
08.04.09 | This is a pretty good list overall. You covered a lot of areas of music and the choices are good for the most part. I for one would have added the Buzzcocks and The Clash for punk. |
thebbqshrimp
08.04.09 | The Clash is #25. |
EVedder27
08.04.09 | yep...just noticed |
thebbqshrimp
08.04.09 | Oh, and Talking Heads. Come on. Gotta have them. |
PaddyPooHead
08.04.09 | thanks some good suggestions keep them coming |
Titan50
08.05.09 | Depeche Mode, New Order, The Prodigy and Daft Punk were as, if not more, influential on electronic music than Kraftwerk
Also, Weezer and At the Drive-In |
Yotimi
08.05.09 | I respectfully disagree. Kraftwerk are way more influential. |
thebbqshrimp
08.05.09 | Gotta agree with Yotimi. Also, Aphex Twin is more influential than the lot of 'em, I'd say. Definitely more so than Daft Punk and all other techno artists, at least. They wouldn't be doing what they're doing if it wasn't for him. |
robertsona
08.05.09 | uh no kraftwerk def. influenced aphex jus sayin |
thebbqshrimp
08.05.09 | Yeah, sorry. My post was directed @ Titan. Kraftwerk were doing electronica before anyone else. |
Zip
08.05.09 | Needs moar Mayhem/Burzum |
masterofpuppets8
08.29.09 | never heard of 12, 14, 18, 19, 29, 30, 35, 43, 49, 55, 73, 74 |

robertsona
08.30.09 | metal is all i hear. nothing else exists. |
plank831
09.03.09 | Is this based on your taste and your own list? Cause if it is, you sir have a very fine taste for music :D
But I reckon Linkin Park and My Chemical Romance aren't as influential as The Cure, RHCP, and the Kinks.
You missed Weezer, Joy Division/New Order, Rush, the Byrds, and Simon n Garfunkle. |
Benzum
09.03.09 | it's ok take a deep breath. It's only a stupid list made by some clown. It can't hurt you physically. |
PaddyPooHead
09.04.09 | What do mean mady by some clown? |
masterofpuppets8
09.07.09 | "...you basically just admitted to everyone your complete and utter music ignorance."
yeah man. whatever you say. |
PaddyPooHead
09.08.09 | To be honest it is a bit hard to believe you've never heard of those artists |
thebbqshrimp
09.08.09 | To be honest he doesn't belong on this site if he hasn't. |
thebbqshrimp
09.08.09 | Or, I guess the complete opposite. He needs to use it more to branch out. Never heard of James fucking Brown or Miles Davis or Robert Johnson or NWA?! C'mon! I can kind of understand Nas and Raekwon if you're not into Rap, or The Get Up Kids if you're not into Punk. But, still. C'MON! Never HEARD of them? |
masterofpuppets8
09.08.09 | yeah i agree i need to branch out more... i'm only 16 if that counts for anything. i'm heavily into classic prog and other stuff but feel free to tell me if i should definately listen to a certain album or something... |
Kashmir09
09.30.09 | Based on the title of this list, you really couldn't have done a more admirable job |
qwe3
09.30.09 | definitely could have |

10.11.09 | You want to add some constructive suggestions instead of being a dick about it? |

10.11.09 | Pretty poor list overall...and a pointless one |
Ragez
10.11.09 | list a bunch of bands almost everyone knows the name of cool story bro |
jrowa001
10.11.09 | people tend to forget the importance of Tangerine Dream when it comes to electronica music. |
kitsch
10.11.09 | well at least 1 and 2 are right |
XulOnerom
10.11.09 | List is either obvious choices (Beatles, Sabbath, Zeppelin) or stupid choices (MCR) |
t0x
10.11.09 | Do you seriously believe My Chemical Romance has been more influential to music than Johnny Cash?
Seriously? |
XulOnerom
10.11.09 | Thinking that My Chemical Romance is more influential than Rush is simply stupid |
PaddyPooHead
10.11.09 | No I don't and I have slightly altered the list accordingly. |
MUNGOLOID
10.19.09 | tolerable list but oasis and my chemical romance? i don't thinks so. |
BrandNewBoognish
10.19.09 | what were you thinking |

MUNGOLOID
10.19.09 | @brandnewboognish
that they sock massiv bollz.
I mispelled dat shit for a reason shawty. |
NovaSilver
10.19.09 | Trying to address this constructively:
MCR don't deserve their place and Linkin Park are influential but RATM pretty much cover the rap/rock area effectively so lose them. Blink 182 do deserve their place for influencing all pop-punk for the last decade.
Too many of your hard rock/heavy metal bands overlap heavily, Motley Crue and Van Halen are both expendable and perhaps swap Slayer out for something heavier and a little less close to your other metal bands
I'm not great with rap but I imagine at least one of the rappers is expendable, maybe replace them with at least one female r & b singer who has influence the genre lately.
Bob Dylan should be here for folk music. I think Nirvana by themselves hold grunge down so I'd lose Pearl Jam. Some post punk needs to be in there, probably Joy Division. You need Beethoven or Mozart for classical music. Perhaps at least one boyband for pop music though Madonna covers the girl side of things. The Libertines don't deserve to be there, they may have ushered in the latest indie wave but they didn't influence it too much. |
BSX
10.19.09 | Kudos to 21, but only one female on the list?
No Bjork, Debbie Harry, Alanis, Chaka, Donna, or Ella. |
Donchivo
10.21.09 | what about CCR? dire straits? putting on bands that just started to play some years ago kinda contradicts the theme of being about influential bands.
But probably its impossible to do an absolutely general list like this. splitting it up in styles and regions could help making this more coherent |
PaddyPooHead
10.21.09 | wow only just realised the lack of females, not too many ones spring to mind for me here though. |
Hollier
11.08.09 | go shoot urself suggesting 75 is influential fucking idiot |
Titan50
11.08.09 | They are. Dick |
dylantheairplane
11.08.09 | your sexist?
I mean there are people like Joan Jett, Janis Joplin.. |
Deviant1769
11.08.09 | "Not sure how you can say Kraftwerk is more influential than Radiohead, N.W.A. and Metallica, though"
Uh, I don't think these are in order but either way they started the
whole electronica thing......in the 70's.
As for Oasis, if they're being included because of the whole Britpop
thing then you'll be needing The Stone Roses, not Oasis |
