|The Definitive Post-Rock List|
I've decided to compile a list of what I think are
essential listens within the post-rock genre.
They are listed from most influential/popular to
lesser known/newcomers. In the deions are a
sub-genre as well as the next best albums, in
order from best to least best. Hopefully this
list helps some of you guys looking to get into
post rock, or looking to expand your libraries.

|1||Godspeed You! Black Emperor|
Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada
The heavy hitter of the post-rock world. Godpseed brings together dark
tones with sweeping ambiance and creepy soundscapes. Recommended next:
Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven, Yanqui U.X.O
Way ahead of their time, Slint brought dark poetry together with now what is
known as post-rock music to form a masterpiece within the genre.
next: Slint EP
Another one of the founders of the genre, Talk Talk uses epic buildups and
climaxes to draw the listener into a world painted by the music. Lyrics also
accompany many of the songs. Recommended next: Spirit of Eden
The debut from this post rock band in 1994 shaped the next wave of post-rock.
Combining various genres within typical post-rock

Hymn to the Immortal Wind
Perfecting their signature post-2000 traditional post-rock sound, Mono uses
to end on mind-crushing climaxes. Recommended next: You Are There, One
More and you
Die, Under the Pipal Tree, Walking Cloud and Deep Redy Sky, Flag Fluttered...

Combining the made up Hopelandic vocals with lush ambient sounds, Sigur Ros
the most well known and revered names in the post-rock world. Recommended

Goodbye Enemy Airship The Landlord Is De
Similar to heavyweights Godspeed, Do Make Say Think take post-rock with a
darkened edge. Recommended next: You, You're in a History of Rust, Winter
Country Hymn Secret Hymn
Another huge name in the post-rock world, Mogwai are credited with creating
epic buildups and climaxes seen with many post-rock bands today such as
Explosions in the Sky. Recommended next: Happy Songs for Happy People, The,
Hawk is Howling
The Fear Is Excruciating, But Therein Lies the Ans
Taking notes from the world of post-metal, Red Sparowes brought together the
quite nature of post-rock and smashed it together with the sludgy nature of
post-metal. Recommended next: Every Red Heart Shines Toward The Red..., At The Soundless Dawn

The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place
Explosions built off the quite and ambient sounds of post-rock to build a
beautiful piece of music that is heralded within all post-rock communities.

The end of the Beginning
God is an Astronaut introduced electronic sounds to traditional post-rock music
to create an interesting blend of electronic and post music. Recommended next:

Enjoy Eternal Bliss
Yndi Halda gathers all of the best parts from their influences to great overly
epic pieces of music.
Borrowing from bands such as Red Sparowes and Mogwai, Pelican crafts post-
and post-rock better than all of the other imitators. Recommended next:

Palmless Prayer / Mass Murder Refrain
A one man Japanese project, World's End Girlfriend uses electronic noises and
buildups to create some of the most hauntingly beautiful music in the post-

|15||Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra|
He Has Left Us Alone...
Compared largely to Godspeed (Mike Moya of Godspeed is in the band), A Silver
Mount Zion uses dark ambiance and lyrics to make chillingly great music.

Ambient 1: Music For Airports
The master of ambient music, Brian Eno makes music that is meant to be half
listened to. Recommended next: Ambient 2, 3, 4, Another Green World, (Many

Uses the base built by God is an Astronaut and 65daysofstatic, Maybeshewill
brings together electronic music and post-rock in a great way. Recommended
Sing the Word Hope in Four-Part Harmony
Russian Circles makes interesting instrumental music with post-rock ideas.

Tales Of The Inexpressible
Post-rock inspired by the great blue ocean. Recommended next: Nothing
Lasts....But Nothing is Lost
Inventions For The New Season
Maserati creates beautiful ambient post rock that will impress any post-rock fan.
Raising Your Voice... Trying to Stop an Echo
Hammock are an extension of the typical post-rock formula, composing long
beautiful songs. Recommended next: Kenotic, Maybe They Will Sing For us
Stranded Under Endless Sky
Hailed as the American Sigur Ros, Kyte lives up to this name by creating
with elegant lyrics.
Just as the name implies this three piece puts forth gripping and intricate post-
usually based around a central theme. The violin work is most prominent in
their music, but
the drumming and guitars both add to epic soundscapes. Recommended next:
Whatever You Love, You Are
|24||Sparrows Swarm and Sing|
Like Godspeed's little brother, Sparrows call upon ominous samples and drawn
melodies that come to crushing climaxes.
A one man post rock project that consistently puts out simple and somber
this short EP. Recommended next: 55:12
