|2009 Favorites/Looking Forward To|
Here are all my favorite records from 2009 so far, not really in any particular order. First 25 are favorites, last 10 is the stuff I'm looking forward to.
Hymn to the Immortal Wind
Probably one of my favorite post-rock albums of all time, it continues to blow my mind every time I listen to it. I purchased the vinyl, and I thought it was pretty cool/funny that it came with lyric sheets for each song that was basically a poem for each song.
|2||Rx Bandits |
I'm a pretty big Bandits fan and this didn't disappoint. Its neck and neck with Battle Begun for my favorite RX album. The loss of the brass section was made up by more explosive music and more use of keyboards, which made the album that much better.
Crack the Skye
This was probably my most anticipated record of the year, and lived up to what I expected and more. The album flows great, and there isn't a bad song on it. It doesn't get as many plays as when it first came out, but I still enjoy it very much.
|4||Cymbals Eat Guitars|
Why There Are Mountains
A huge surprise for 2009. A self released indie album that blows most of the high profile records of this year out of the water. I love the originality and pretty much everything about this album. I don't know if any other indie release this year will be able to top this.
The Hazards of Love
This was my first Decemberists record, and I'm glad I listened to it. I'm a sucker for concept albums, and this is just my cup of tea. The dual vocals and the concept driven lyrics are a perfect match for me.
Good old Pelican back with a great EP. Nothing groundbreaking here, but it is a great little EP that I play often.
|7|| ||An So I Watch You From Afar|
And So I Watch You From Afar
Awesome instrumental rock. The energy on this record is incredible. I think someone else said it in a review, but they are like the At The Drive-In of post-rock right now.
|8||Portugal. The Man|
The Satanic Satanist
Another one of my big favorites of the year. The blend in nature of all of the songs, and its short play time makes this album get tons of spins. I was looking forward to seeing these guys live this year, but they are playing 2 clubs in NYC that are both 21+, ugh.
Great electro-indie. I was surprised at how good this was when I first heard it, and it just keeps getting better with each listen.
Sure to make a lot of sputnik top 10 lists, this fuels my need for great female singer/songwriters. Her quirky lyrics and soulful music is always amazing. The production on this album is absolutely incredible, I don't think I've heard such a clean production before.
|11||Bat For Lashes|
Again, great female singer/songwriter. Natasha and Regina are going to have to fight it out to make my end of the year list.
Another album that surprised me. Really original music that blew me away on first listen. I can't wait for a full length from these guys.
Experimental chick rock that is hilariously good.
|14|| ||Codes in the Clouds|
Some more great post-rock. I don't think this has gotten much attention on sputnik, but if you like post-rock similar to Sigur Ros and Mono, you'll definitely dig this. Give it a listen.
One of my favorite metal releases of the year. I haven't listened to much metal from this year (is there really much though?), but this definitely impressed. I don't think Kurt Ballou has yet to produce a bad album.
Another great metal release from this year. Again, I haven't heard much metal from this year, so if anyone wants to rec me some great 09 metal, that would be great.
Some more great indie. Doesn't get as many plays as Cymbals or some of the other indies on my list, but that doesn't take away from how good this album is.
There hasn't been much on the electronic front this year, but I really enjoyed this.
|19||The Mars Volta|
Not my favorite Mars Volta record by any means, but it isn't bad. I play certain songs off this more often than listening to the whole thing. Probably won't make the end of the year list.
An overlooked metal gem here from what I've noticed.
More great indie. Took me a little while to get used to the vocals, but once I got past that I realized how good this is.
I normally can't stand punk, but there is no denying this is good stuff.
|23||So Many Dynamos|
The Loud Wars
Hard to describe this record, but I like it.
|24||This Town Needs Guns|
More original sounding stuff from this year that I like. Indie math rock done right.
Surprisingly good debut from these guys. Psychedelic indie I guess you could call it.
|26|| ||Brand New|
Solo Electric Bass 1
|28|| ||As Tall As Lions|
You Can't Take it With You
|30|| ||Between the Buried and Me|
The Great Misdirect
