The Five Most Overrated Indie Albums Ever

Five albums that don't deserve half the praise they recieve.
1Flaming Lips
The Soft Bulletin

It was all downhill for them after Transmissions From the Satellite Heart. This album is hailed as the second coming of Christ, but in reality is overwrought, bombastic, and sickeningly sentimental. Impossible to listen to from beginning to end.
2Wilco
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

A completely mediocre album, hyped to death. The songs are fine, but all they amount to is 70's radio rock filtered through an 'experimental' dusting of weird background noises and obnoxious smartass lyrics like "I am an American aquarium drinker." A six out of ten, at best.
3Radiohead
OK Computer

I like it, but is it a five-star classic? Is it the pitchfork-acclaimed Best Album of the 1990's? Absolutely not. It's educated alternative rock, well done but not even the best thing in their catalog. Too many of the songs fall flat on the second half of the album for this to be anywhere near classic status.
4Joy Division
Closer

Supposedly one of the most emotionally powerful albums of all time, and one of the landmark recordings of the 1980's, it's also one of the most unlistenable. A few tracks are worth hearing, but the whole thing together amounts to a fragmented, chaotic mess. Curtis' emotional turmoil is evident, to be sure, but the album's interminable scraping and moaning prevent it from being translated to the listener.
5Dismemberment Plan
Emergency and I

One of the biggest critical favorites in recent years. The critics apparently didn't notice that the album is nothing but Brainiac without the energy, edge and creativity. The songs are dull and completely conscious of how smart they're supposed to come off as; either taking themselves too seriously or not seriously enough. A major disappointment.
