11.29.11 | but Ive only seen it once and that was like 6 years ago maybe I should give it another try. The biggest thing I remember was the blatant product placement in it. |
theacademy
11.29.11 | its not a good movie but i think it's lightyears ahead of what counts as a blockbuster nowadays
seriously compare i, robot to like... "Knowing" or "2012" or even the new planet of the apes... if i, robot didnt have will smith and up the ying yang corporate sponsorship it might have been a middling, unsuccessful, cultish fav
its a 3/5 basically but there are too many unintentionally funny parts to go lower than that |
BigHans
11.29.11 | 2012 is one of the worst movies ever made |
theacademy
11.29.11 | i liked the part with the boats and shit in the end that was sorta cool i guess ;S |

11.29.11 | it's a pretty enjoyable movie, better than most of its kind. not 2012 that move was fucking hilarious |

11.29.11 | for .49 cents + 2 dollars shipping, it was worth it to watch i, robot again. |

11.29.11 | Did you just say that I, Robot was better than the new Planet of the Apes? |

11.29.11 | Robots, apes. Will Smith, James Franco. Same difference right? |
FruityCatOfDoom
11.29.11 | 2012 isn't really a movie. It's just like a clusterfuck collection of entertaining CGI scenes with some shitty acting scattered throughout.
And Saul was James Francos best performance. |
FrankRedHot
11.29.11 | Then you haven't seen Sonny, Milk, or 127 hours, if you think Saul is his best performance. |
theacademy
11.29.11 | ok a few things:
1) pit, i think creating a good (memorable) comedic character is arguably more difficult than just acting the shit out of a great dramatic script. I think Franco was incredible in 127 and Milk, but I also think Saul belongs up there (especially because i think Pineapple Express was pretty average overall)
2) The recent planet and the will smith I, robot are the same thing because they're both sterile, hollywood regurgitation of basic sci-fi undercurrents (and particularly, undercurrents which have been done to death). which is not to say they're bad (when I see this sort of thing, i end up looking more towards execution and less towards originality, obviously). I think they both work in the same way (and fail in the same way).

I disagree. Pineapple Express was painfully average, and while Franco played a great stoner, that in no way, shape, or form belongs on the list with 127 nor Milk.
"The recent planet and the will smith I, robot are the same thing because they're both sterile, hollywood regurgitation of basic sci-fi undercurrents (and particularly, undercurrents which have been done to death). which is not to say they're bad (when I see this sort of thing, i end up looking more towards execution and less towards originality, obviously). I found the new Apes not sterile at all. I found it to be great entertainment, and a step above most remakes. I, Robot, however, was basically a stock movie with Will Smith. |
theacademy
11.29.11 | if you put will smith in for james franco and mapped alan tudyk's face onto caesars instead of that LOTR dude, you might call planet of the apes 'basically a stock movie with Will Smith"
i mean, the only thing that wasn't sterile about the rise of the planet of the apes was Caesar. The CG monkey.
Here's a list of stuff (not seminal examples but all come before rise):
-man's scientific hubris destroys/threatens to destroy society as we know it: a fuckload of sci-fi movies, including multiple Will Smith movies like I, Robot and I Am Legend
-feeling bad for CG monkeys: King Kong
-the dangers of animal testing gone out of control: 28 Days Later
-the dangers of cognitive development in animals: Deep Blue Sea
-a brilliant, rogue doctor, confined by corporatism (under the guise scientific protocols) steps outside his/her mandate: Deep Blue Sea
-a brilliant, rogue doctor's plot-driving actions are driven by a family member with degenerative brain disease: Deep Blue Sea
-"...as a side effect, the sharks [monkeys] got smahteh": Deep Blue Sea
-Enlightened animals rebel against their human captors purely for freedom: Deep Blue Sea

11.29.11 | There's no way in hell I, Robot is on the same level as Rise of the Planet of the Apes. And you know you can do that (point out the tropes and protocols of a particular genre, however vaguely attributed, with something akin to desperation) with virtually every film ever made? |
Sanders
11.29.11 | Samuel L Jackson's death in Deep Blue Sea was the best |
FrankRedHot
11.29.11 | Acad, you know you're my boy, but you've basically made yourself look like a fool with those comparisons. |
theacademy
11.29.11 | they're not really comparisons so much as they are, as paxman pointed out, pointing out the "tropes" of sci-fi films (i only disagree with his "every film ever made"... i feel that is a bit too broad and "almost every sci-fi ever made" would work a lot better), and doing so in a comical way. I don't exactly know what his point was in commenting here (other than to disagree with my valuation of Rise of the Planet of the Apes) but i'm sure he'll respond.
MY point is that (almost) every criticism people have against I, Robot (and again, most of these I agree with), can also be applied to Rise of the Planet.
They are both 2.5/5 to 3/5. |

11.29.11 | I have kind of given up on blockbusters nowadays, I'm usually in disbelief at how unoriginal 90% of what I'm watching is. |
FrankRedHot
11.29.11 |
That's not true, either acad. You're basically saying they are the exact same movie, all the while
ignoring the cinematography, script, acting, casting, etc etc. |
theacademy
11.29.11 | the acting is pretty terrible in both tbh, so that's a wash
casting is really kinda retarded because it's so integrated into the financials of a picture and so much a question for suits as well as critics that i really just ignore it... and will smith gets to make any movie he wants. how do you evaluate casting? Sure, Smith as Spooner is pretty terrible, but if you make the question relative:
is Will Smith playing a detective less believable than James Franco playing a neurologist/geneticist? Freida Pinto, a sexy 25 year old expert on primates???
idk... neither script is impressive but I guess I, Robot has some lower lows ("I DID NOT MURDER HIMMM")... and as for cinematography, both films are so effects-heavy (and sterile) i can't be bothered to really care... shooting on location always beats sound stages, so I guess Planet wins by default, but the city of San Francisco did all the work and i can't really see cinematography being the difference-maker here let's be honest. |

11.30.11 | Sorry if my post was harsh, acad, as I wrote it in a bit of a rush, and I commented only to comment and perhaps provide additional argument (as does anyone?), however if you'd rather me stay away from your thread I will humbly do so. It does seem, however, that I failed to properly expound on my point. What I meant was that you could pick virtually any two films within the same genre or genres and find similarities in the underlying plot (otherwise known as the tropes and protocols).
It's just that I thoroughly enjoyed RotPotA (the film was also well-received critically, if that matters at all), and I thoroughly hated I, Robot. In addition, I am a big fan of Franco and far from a big fan of Smith. |

11.30.11 | Fucking loved I, Robot back in the day |

11.30.11 | it wasn't harsh at all it was just a statement

and critical reception doesn't matter at all for purposes of this thread, but I, Robot's 59 metascore is pretty close to Rise of the Planet's 68... just sayin |
