but the remake of the original is AMAZING |
WhiteWallStargazers
11.01.09 | eh thats cool bro, I could see that being true. I wasn't super impressed with Gears of War, but other then that your list is solid (though I havn't played some of them) |
dischord13
11.01.09 | Thanks^
I enjoyed Resident Evil 5 more than 4, I will be honest. But 4 has a better cast, better atmsphere, and is longer. So while 5 may be a little more "fun," 4 is an overall better experience IMO |
dylantheairplane
11.01.09 | I loved 4 up until you went into the castle, then I got really bored. |

11.01.09 | no half life, fallout, starcraft, deus ex, goldeneye, GTA? |
gyromania1
11.01.09 | Great list. Resident Evil one blows RE4 out of the damn water though.
no half life, fallout, starcraft, deus ex, goldeneye, GTA?
Half Life is excellent, fallout is Oblivion with vats and guns, Deus Ex's loading time is soooooo bad on Invisible War and the original is just not that good, Goldeneye... yes, yes, yes, amazing. GTA 4 is probably one of the greatest games ever. |
maqwep
11.01.09 | GTA 4 is one of the most overrated games ever
|
gyromania1
11.01.09 | The physics/graphics are amazing. Not sure how anyone could deny it its title. |
maqwep
11.01.09 | assassin's creed also had great physics and graphics. and it sucked balls.
|
Transient
11.01.09 | best GTA was vice city or san andreas |
maqwep
11.01.09 | ^ amen |
gyromania1
11.01.09 | Lol, Vice City had the best storyline but wasn't very exciting and the only thing good about San Andreas is that you could ride a bicycle. |
maqwep
11.01.09 | what do you mean? san andreas was similar in gameplay to every gta game post-GTA3. but it was better |
gyromania1
11.01.09 | San Andreas had a garbage storyline and poor graphics: ie- cut-scenes. How could you not think that GTA4 expanded upon its predecessors? The graphics are better, the story is better, the physics are better, the audio is better, the driving is better, the shooting is better, etc. |
Benzum
11.01.09 | needs more Dead Space. |
Phantom
11.01.09 | Street Fighter II
Mariokart
oh and GTA IV was pretty bad |
mutatedfreek
11.01.09 | lots of great games here. I'd like to see Metal Gear Solid 1 or 2 here and also Deus Ex. |
RedSky
11.01.09 | GTA games past the original third one have been utterly generic. They do nothing to improve the formula other than to add gimmicky features such as being able to go to the club and pick up dates that are not fun in the first place and serve nothing other than to satisfy the core mainstream constituent's craving for superfluous realism. All they have ever been are incremental graphics updates with a mostly identical cookie cutter story plastered over the top.
Hell, if anything the series has regressed. GTA4 replaced the occasional variety of RC helicopters, flight school, skydiving and the like of previous games with an endless barrage of drive here, kill this person rinse and repeat nonsense. The gameplay in the series has been staid for years, yet just about every sycophantic review site out there praised it for it's relentless obsession with realism above everything else. |
gyromania1
11.01.09 | I fail to see how Ocarina of Time was generic. |
mutatedfreek
11.01.09 | He means generic pick I think. |
gyromania1
11.01.09 | Redsky: What you're saying is almost like me saying "man, rock band has done nothing to improve its formula, you just play songs on plastic instruments". How can they continue to make innovative features? The cell phone was a cool add on that I'm sure no one foresaw. |
CrazyGreg
11.01.09 | Vice City is the best GTA, though IV wins points for its multiplayer |
RedSky
11.01.09 | gyromania1: Analogies are meaningless because you can always get them to suit whatever you want them to. Honestly if the cell phone is the best example you can think of, of innovative gameplay then I think I've made my point.
I could name you what would likely be an endless list of games which had more gameplay variety than GTA4's endless stream of drive and kill missions, or a series of games that has done way more to build on the actual core gameplay. The only reason I even played the last one was because the radio chatter is just so consistently hilarious, but that's really the only good thing I can say about the series. |
gyromania1
11.01.09 | It's like the whole world is intentionally ignorant towards the actual good games out there, mirite?
The cellphone was a cool feature, though it seems like whatever they put you likely would have found a reason to be disappointed with it. It's such a large scale game that it's hard to continue to innovate on it, and everything they do to add to it will seem like a small feature because of how large the game is.
It's not a game that's meant to have a fantastic story-line, I think the reason most people play it is because of the freedom of choice and because it acts almost like a second life. You should have known what to expect before the game came out. There's been a lot of work put into it, I wonder how much more they could have crammed in. |
MrPoopular
11.01.09 | GTA4 was extremely overrated. He's right in saying that the series hasn't really progressed all that much since GTA3 |
mutatedfreek
11.01.09 | Saints Row 2 was better at being GTA than GTA4 was, there I said it. |
RedSky
11.01.09 | Well yeah, people are just too accepting of developers trawling out the same content in a new skin.
As far as professional reviewer sites, well they have to bias their scores if they want to get pre release versions to review or special treatment for preview exclusives. Case in point, read the third quote in grey:
http://www.gameswire.net/news/reviewer-odst-is-underwhelming_316.html
That's how the business works.
If they really wanted to expand the GTA series they would have expanded the plot line to allow for real choice in events and how the plot progresses rather than one minor bit of choice at the end like in IV. They would have included way more special scripted sequences to ensure that all missions weren't basically the same. To be fair Vice/Andreas had quite a few, IV had virtually none. I mean, this is one of the best selling game series in the world, there's no excuse for them to not drastically improve upon it. Multiplayer? Well frankly it's hilarious it took them to the 4th game in the series to include anything substantive. Meanwhile, ever since the original GTA3, there have been mods that add support for this. |
Baphomet
11.01.09 | Agreed on the songs and on the games 100%...
fuck it, will you marry me? |
EVedder27
11.01.09 | Twisted Metal
Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 |
gyromania1
11.01.09 | Vegas 2 was somehow impossibly shittier than the first. How the hell is Saints Row 2 better than GTA4? That game sucks ass.
I think you're expecting a little bit too much, RedSky. I enjoy the game plenty, but I acknowledge the fact that IT'S A GAME. It is not a culmination of every single amazing concept game-related put in one package. That kind of game will never come. I could sit here and bitch all day about how it could have been better or what they should of done, or what I would have put into it. It's easy to look for cons in something, I think that people, myself even should just appreciate things more for what they are and acknowledge the fact that not everyone thinks like you or me. |
PayneTiger777
11.01.09 | My favorite is probably Resident Evil 4. My next two favorites would have to be Uncharted 2 and Mass Effect. Amazing amazing games. |
gyromania1
11.01.09 | Resident Evil 1 is best. |
NebSnurbPart2
11.01.09 | Video games are pretty much the best thing ever. |
greatlakes996
11.01.09 | Saints Row 2 > GTA4
Pokemon Gold and Silver > Red and Blue.
Because Saints Row 2 is more addicting, and Gold and Silver has night and day, plus you can go to Kanto at the end and battle Ash. |
dischord13

11.02.09 | Excellent games list. I've played all but Okami and The World Ends with you (Okami will be the next game I play) and love them all, especially 1,2,3,4,5,7,9,12,14,and18 . I'd add Shadow of the Colossus and Twisted Metal 2 and Conkers Bad Fur Day to mine. |
StrizzMatik
11.17.09 | Mega super fail at the omission of Street Fighter 2, Metal Gear Solid series, Doom, etc. |
