01.30.10 | Listening to music while writing isn't a great idea. Silence works best |
dylantheairplane
01.30.10 | I disagree, I always work better with music playing quietly in the background |
Romulus
01.30.10 | Agreed with Poopular, not that I'm much of a writer at all. |
StreetlightRock
01.30.10 | Good luck dude. Ambienty/postrocky stuff works well, but yeah, in general, music while trying to write stuff isn't all that great an idea.
eluvium, brian eno, booka shade, rachel's, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, basically anything without vocals. |

01.30.10 | i do every type of school work with music. These seem like good albums to write to. What's the premise of your book if you don't mind me asking? |
dylantheairplane
01.30.10 | its like a coming of age book with hints of comedy, but also a lot of seriousness.
in a way that 'The Drums' album sums it up pretty well. |

01.30.10 | very nice! |

01.30.10 | That was probably a bad explanation, but basically its about this 17 year old boy during his pre-senior year summer break. During the first week of break his best friend commits suicide, then through an odd series of events the boy ends up in a big emotion mess and ends up running away from home, but on the way he ends up getting involved with a bad group of people (some good people too) and this sets off a whole mess of events with a very dramatic conclusion |

01.30.10 | and thank you :] |

01.30.10 | yeah music is good when writing. Streetlight knows where it's at, post-rocky/ambient stuff is real good. Max Richter's Blue Notebooks is good.
And remember when writing: "make it new" |
MUNGOLOID
01.30.10 | good luck with that. i'm trying to write a novel myself and man, it's challenging but also fun. here's some albums that are essential listens for writers:
moby - play
j dilla - donuts

Gyromania
01.30.10 | Excellent list! Particularly- 1, 3, and 8. I was in the process of writing a book last May, however, I got 45 pages in and my laptop crashed. Needless to say I was thoroughly upset and discouraged and haven't tried to re-write it yet.
Anyways, when I was writing that I listened to dredg- El Cielo, Sigur Ros- takk and ( ), Muse- Absolution, The Fountain OST, X Japan- Art Of Life, Kashiwa Daisuke- Program Music, I, and Kate Bush- Hounds of Love.
Enjoy! And good luck to you. |
Gyromania
01.30.10 | Almost forgot to add one of the more important ones- Bjork- Homogenic. |

01.30.10 | I suppose whatever you're writing, you play music accordingly. |
Waior
01.30.10 | I need silence when I'm doing creative writing but my creative writing always sucks - maybe I should be listening to something then. Or doing something other than making crappy dialogues. |
IanDavila
01.30.10 | stars of the lid- and their refinement...
jonsi and alex- riceboy sleeps |
RobotFrank
01.30.10 | I'm also in the early stages of writing a book. We should start a club! I always end up finding myself writing reviews about music absolutely nobody listens to instead of working on my sci-fi thriller. I really need to set some priorities.. |
Rationalist
01.30.10 | I too am writing a book, and I find that if you know what you're writing about (anger, happiness, sadness, triumph, etc.) the music you listen to should reflect that scenario. If your writing about (a rather cliche example) a fantasy world where a character is excperiencing its beauty, listen to some GY!BE or something like that. If your writing about a violent scene, listen to Nocte Obducta or something like that.
I find that if you listen to more serious music, your writing comes off as more adept. Listen to CTTS rather than Usurp Synapse. Or listen to Radiohead rather than Dirty Projectors. |
