12.23.09 | all these good remarks about the movie have made me curious and yours, my friend, just hit the final nail in the coffin. Going to look up a good seance, and shall go and check this out. |

HugCrewLoveRoll
12.23.09 | You should all go see it now! the story is kinda meh, but the effects are so well done and impressive that it's totally worth seeing.
Best movie I've seen in a long time!
List wins because of 4. |

12.23.09 | Storyline was horrible but otherwise a solid movie. Man, that blue chick was hot. |
dylantheairplane
12.23.09 | i didnt even realize until today that the blue girl is the same girl from Star Trek |
Jim
12.23.09 | the effects were great, and the 3D provided some good moments, but the story was rubbish and i was bored regularly. |
samr4563
12.23.09 | Effects and visuals were some of the best I've ever seen. But I will say that the plot was freaking generic and the dialogue was really campy. |
AnotherBrick
12.23.09 | be sure to look into the concept of the movie before you see. it is tied into religion in tons of ways but goes against Christianity so im sure most of you would love that |
Titan50
12.23.09 | Yes, the story was generic, but it was told with such emotion that it didn't matter
oh yeah, and it looked fantastic |

12.23.09 | It was fantastic. Visually appealing, very entertaining, and completely worth the large budget. I found it to not be generic. |

12.23.09 | this is an awesome movie stop going on about the plot as if it's super awful
it's better than the dark knight or whatever other films you guys hype up like faggots |

12.23.09 | Dude, shut up, Dark Knight was fantastic

12.23.09 | i hope by fantastic you merely mean good |
klap
12.23.09 | kane, c'mon, i wrote a plot like that in 9th grade english, the story was generic as fuck and the message was about as subtle as james cameron taking a brick marked "IRAQ WAR" to my head.
but the effects were amazing, especially in 3D imax, so that definitely counts for something |
Roach
12.23.09 | i'm not saying the plot is good but it's not as bad as people are making out, not to mention these people like films with way worse plots
also i see it more as more 'anti-human' than 'anti-iraq' or 'anti west' |
DaveyBoy
12.23.09 | So can I presume this should definitely be seen in the 3D version...??? |
robin
12.23.09 | i love that klappy is calling this out, cause it's exactly why im feeling bad about the film. havent seen it yet, but getting the impending doom that i will at some point |
ninjuice
12.23.09 | The plot was hardly anywhere near bad enough to be a problem.
I saw it at midnight and then went again for 3D. Totally worth it. |
Relinquished
12.23.09 | Movie was a little predictable at times. Knew the beefed up veteran dude was gonna be the bad guy. Storyline was kinda good, but that's about it. The detail was the best though. |
Titan50
12.23.09 | "So can I presume this should definitely be seen in the 3D version...???"
While it was hardly noticable (in a good way, not in your face like Spykids 3D was), it definitely improved things |
klap
12.23.09 | yeah, basically it's just anti-imperialism or whatever, it's just annoying me that everyone is thinking this is like the greatest movie of the decade or whatever. i will say it's probably the best designed movie of the decade, purely for aesthetic reasons and because the world is really fleshed out. plus it looks sick
but the story was stereotypical, bland, and absolutely unsurprising. plus the bad guy was such a caricature he might as well have been a cartoon |
klap
12.23.09 | also yeah davey, definitely see it in 3D, imax if you can |
Roach
12.23.09 | i'm not saying it's an amazing film but like lewis said yesterday it's a masterpiece for it's genre and mainstream movies in general |
klap
12.23.09 | i suppose you could call it a masterpiece when it comes to mainstream films (definitely better than titanic), but i think landmark is more appropriate |
Knott-
12.23.09 | i would call it classic, just got back from seeing it; astounding |
Roach
12.23.09 | "I think people just really wanted to find something wrong with the film, because if you rave over something like this you sound like a faggot. So everyones like yeah it was visually stunning but the story was kind of weak.
Hardly. Not only is it the single best use of 3D, but I think this movie coulda made it with half as stunning the visuals. Absolutely fabulous. I saw it last night at 10:30, after working all day, and I was exhausted, but for the next 3 hours I was on the edge of mah seat." |
Roach
12.23.09 | "Avatar
As big and dumb as Titanic, and just as mesmerizing. I understand the beef on the script, and I too like my films to hold a little more subtlety, but James Cameron is not the guy to go to for subtlety. If Hollywood is going to continue to make blockbusters, I'd rather have Avatar on the shelf than more Transformers. The dialogue here is just broad and manicured to convey all the necessary emotions instead of just filling space with ham-fisted "development." At least after the first twenty minutes, which are admittedly really embarrassing setting up all the military men as one-liner spewing spatulas. Once the film switched to the Na'vis, I was completely sucked in. The film feels its length but that's a testament to how much I ended up caring for the Na'vis and their people. Cameron very much loves the world he has created and its evident in how painful it is to endure watching it get torn apart. I was entertained by just how horrible I felt even as the explosions ravaged in awesome 3D technology, which made the peoples' 40 minute comeuppance that much more enthralling (not to mention all the set pieces Cameron pulls off). The ending is pitch perfect and sent me off with a jittery high. For what it set out to be, Avatar is near perfect. My ten year old self would probably have a new favorite movie, for now I had a really fun time at the movies.
avatar/10" |
Roach
12.23.09 | "Avatar is a mainstream film with a familiar plot and tension-breaking one liners, predictable etc. etc., but wasn't Titanic? Hasn't every James Cameron film? Besides the embarrassing first twenty minutes where his disdain for military is really apparent, I feel like Cameron has done exactly what he wanted to: create a film that EVERYONE can understand and enjoy, without too much subtleties or convoluted plot points to take away from what is supposed to a simple, huge metaphor wrapped up in one of the most visually stunning films to come out in the decade. I can understand not liking the script because the dialogue is bad in that objective way that no one actually talks like people, and that's alright because it's certainly broad but never ham-fisted. "Effective" has been thrown around a lot and I feel like it is an appropriate description of what Cameron has done: taken a puzzle with huge pieces and rearranged them with a flashier design. Certainly no classic or benchmark for my own personal tastes, but compared to any other blockbuster we get thrown around (bad: Transformers; "good": The Dark Knight), Avatar is a damn near masterpiece for its genre." |

12.23.09 | movie was flat-out incredible
even better seeing as how i saw it in 3d fo freesies |
Roach
12.23.09 | on this film i have a very similar opinion as him so it was easier to quote than write out the same thing |
klap
12.23.09 | see, i see where you both are coming from, i just feel like more often than not it WAS ham-fisted and nearly every character is just a huge caricature/stereotype. i can deal with a shitty story but everything about the story just seemed like a half-baked metaphor that Cameron threw together to go with this amazing world he already had all planned out |
JWT155
12.23.09 | I would hardly call this film half baked, the script for this was writen after T-2, he's had nearly 2 decades to tune the script. |
natey
12.23.09 | "but the story was stereotypical, bland, and absolutely unsurprising. plus the bad guy was such a caricature he might as well have been a cartoon"
I agree it was unsurprising. I loved the relationship between the blue chick and Sulley. I loved watching the story unfold. I didn't love it too much though. Many people who saw it before me came back claiming they had orgasmed do to the 3d and it felt like heaven watching it. I wouldn't have minded if it wasn't even in 3d (and i saw it in IMAX 3D back row center/fave in the hosue)
|
klap
12.23.09 | yeah he had a shitload of time to write this and he came up with a story that a creative high schooler could've made. personally i think he spent more time on describing the fauna and how everything would look and interact because that's where the heart of the movie is in my opinion |
JWT155
12.24.09 | I agree that the plot was a mix of Dances with Wolves and Pocahontas and wasn't the best, but with a movie like this; he could've crafted the best script ever BUT if the characters and the world weren't perfect, it would have flopped big time. He did a great job casting as well, the evil Colonel did a PERFECT job. |
klap
12.24.09 | seriously? the colonel was a cartoon, an amalgamation of all "evil military stereotypes" of the past twenty years. all the actor had to do was ham it up and look like a badass (which, admittedly, he did perfectly fine) |
JWT155
12.24.09 | How would you then create the antagonist? |
robertsona
12.24.09 | this movie fuckin owned |

12.24.09 | maybe a bit less one-dimensional, i dont know, that's probably what cameron was going for |

12.24.09 | i agree tho biggest problem was 'hard-ass bad guy who doesnt care about PEOPLE WHO ARE DIFFERENT. no matter what' as the enemy and that was annoying. also the fact that the main guy was stereotypical ~human dumbass~ but you know
fuckin loved it anyway. so good |
JWT155
12.24.09 | Honostly, my only problem was the idea that people may think that all corporations are run by carless thugs that don't believe in compromise, the script, in since it was written in the 90's, does remind me of the whole idea of "Save the rain forrest" from the 90's that I guess can be applied to the comical global warming ideas of today. |

12.24.09 | So basically the only reason to see this fim is for CGI. If thats it ill take a pass. |
JWT155
12.24.09 | I'd definitely go see it again, the CGI is great but what I love about the film is that I actually cared about what happened to the characters during the film. Very few movies I watch sucessfully get me involved with what's ging on and this movie did that. |
rodigo1
12.24.09 | yeah visuals usually don't impress me but the movie is worth seeing.
and only for that.
nothing else.
only the visuals.
that's it. |

12.24.09 | my brother said that it was the best smurf movie EVERR! |
Titan50
12.24.09 | Agreed with JWT. Yes, the plot and characters were simple, but it was how it was told. Yes, I did feel terrible when they destroyed the forest, I did feel sad when the blue girl's dad died, I did feel sad for Jake when he got rejected by the N'aavis. It is a very emotional film, even if you take out the visuals you can steel see how connected to it Cameron was |
