Jethro42
06.11.15 | Lots of great Rush songs are not included cos of my limit of 3 each. |
Torontonian
06.11.15 | sweet list, 4 and 7 are my faves |
Jethro42
06.11.15 | Nice picks! 3 and 4 are pretty interchangeable, and I prefer 6 over 7 by a thin margin. |
beefshoes
06.11.15 | Definitely agree with the top 5. After that, it starts getting tough to pick the order. |
Ryus
06.11.15 | you got my top 4 totally correct sweet |
Jethro42
06.12.15 | You're right, I for myself had hard times to put it together passed Grace Under Pressure. Lots of the albums are interchangeable, mostly those that I rated 3.5/5.
I feel I put 17 a bit low. I re-listen to it atm. |
Jethro42
06.12.15 | Cheers Ryus |
Ryus
06.12.15 | time stand still is so classic |
IronGiant
06.12.15 | 2 is my 1 and the only Rush album I personally consider a classic |
Jethro42
06.12.15 | You're right Ryus. The entire album is better than I thought. I'm halfway through it now. |
beefshoes
06.12.15 | [2]
Honestly, Time Stand Still is probably my favorite post-Moving Pictures Rush track. So good.
Nice ranking too btw.
|
Jethro42
06.12.15 | You're too harsh IronGiant. 1, 3 and 4 are all perfect albums imo. |
Ryus
06.12.15 | @Jethro yeah it's probably around number 10 for me |
Jethro42
06.12.15 | @beefshoes, thanks man. And yes Time Stand Still is m/
That's what I thought Ryus. Hold Your Fire is even a contender for a 4/5... |
Titan
06.12.15 | No Digital Man on 6 Jethro bro? |
Jethro42
06.12.15 | Yeah I know Titan it broke my heart not including that one...Easily a top 3 song into the album. And probably a top ten Rush song. :`( |
Titan
06.12.15 | great list, book 1 is incredible |
Jethro42
06.12.15 | Yeah best Rush song to me, and among the best songs ever! |
Royl123
06.12.15 | Never got into rush tbh... |
Ryus
06.12.15 | shame on you |
argonaut
06.12.15 | The top three are my top three as well, not sure what order I'd put them in though. Only complaint is that the self-titled shouldn't be last, but I understand why some aren't fans of it. |
Royl123
06.12.15 | I mean, I'm not saying they're bad or anything; it's just that they're not my cup of tea... |
LotusFlower
06.12.15 | 9 is too high |
evilford
06.12.15 | Jacob's ladder mah nigga |
evilford
06.12.15 | Kinda sad to see 19 at 19 tho |
JamieTwort
06.12.15 | 2 is 1 for me and I'd have 11 higher but overall good ranking dude. |
Friday13th
06.12.15 | Nice ranking! I saw Rush this tour and they played lots of classics including Cygnus X-1, Xanadu, and Jacobs Ladder. Have you seen Rush live, Jethro? |
elcrawfodor
06.12.15 | Your top 3 off of Signals are on point, Losing It needs more love |
Jethro42
06.12.15 | @evilford, the s/t lacks on true gems and it doesn't sound like a Rush album. And the absence of Neil Peart is for something.
@JT, thanks man.
@Friday, Yes, I've seen Rush 2 times. For Power Windows, opened by Marillion, and Presto (I don't think they had a band to support) |
Jethro42
06.12.15 | @elcrawfodor, I agreed, cheers! |
evilford
06.12.15 | I'm still glad to see someone who loves jacob's ladder potentially as much as I do :] |
Jethro42
06.12.15 | Yes evilford, Jacob's Ladder is at least in my top 10 Rush songs.
@Friday, Rush are pretty generous live, and their song renditions are always identical to the studio version. They truely are magicians. How were the drum solo and the Geddy's vocals? |
Jethro42
06.12.15 | truly* |
Friday13th
06.12.15 | They sounded great, Geddy understandably avoided the shrieking on Cygnus though. Awesome man. I love Rush and would have loved to see them back then. |

06.12.15 | Ah, The Spirit of Radio. The opening salvo on the first record released in the 1980s. It was a tumultuous time. An age of excess. An era personified by greed, repugnant fashion, and miles of cocaine. A co-mingling of unabashed tomfoolery, of unbridled skullduggery, of unmitigated ballyhoo. The track was a soothsayer. Released on the first day of the decade, it accurately predicted the scope of the pop-cultural and socio-economic mores of the time. It’s a song about riffs and how riffs make you feel. A song about how riffs are the best things in life. Without fear of retribution, it brilliantly scathes the notion how some exploit riffs for profit. How "prophets" is code for studio walls and concert halls and abusing the purest aspects of them. It perfectly encapsulates human nature, courageously calling out the corrupt aspects of life and telling us to ignore them anyway. To embrace the things that are inherently perfect despite their scars. We’re talking about music. The power and freedom of music. One of the few entities that carries across generations, that can inspire a timid man to hate rape a grizzly bear, or an evil man to hug puppies and sh*t rainbows. It’s that powerful, that inspiring, and that meaningful. It’s a spirit that ever lingers.

BigHans
06.12.15 | In other words, list needs more Spirit of Radio P/ |
Jethro42
06.12.15 | omg BigHans. If only I knew that you'd visit this list, I would have paid more attention to my Permanent Waves' selection of songs. You know how to make Spirit of the Radio sound still better with your thoughts. Well it's indeed a quality song and the album would not be the same without its famous opener. Maybe it's the proghead in me that chose those 3 songs above, and the hard rocker in you that makes your preference, but in all objectivity, I was supposed to add the essential Spirit of the Radio, I give you that, and I tip you my hat to bring it all in an American Psycho way.
P/ hard my friend. And it's always great to see you around! |
Ryus
06.12.15 | " One of the few entities that carries across generations, that can inspire a timid man to hate rape a grizzly bear, or an evil man to hug puppies and sh*t rainbows."
true |
BigHans
06.12.15 | P/ fellow Sputnik old dude |
Jethro42
06.12.15 | Hans, you somehow convinced me to make a change to my Permanent Waves' songs. I replaced Freewill by The Spirit of Radio. Zing! Everyone is happy now!
@Friday, glad you enjoyed your show. And yes, Geddy slowed down his range which is understandable. I think they kind of slightly reduce some of the songs' range to give a chance to Geddy (particularly for the old songs). And tell me, Did Neil make a drum solo? |
Friday13th
06.12.15 | oh yeah, he solo'd in the middle of Cygnus X-1 and it was fantastic |
Jethro42
06.12.15 | The man is still top shape really...and it shows he always has fun playing drums. He is such technical that all his possibilities remain untouched. And I assume you mean Cygnus X-1: Book 1 |
Titan
06.12.15 | i agree with a handful of these as far as top 3 songs go, but not in that particular order Jethro.......1,4,5,8,9,17,18 |
Jethro42
06.12.15 | So you disagree with all these numbers? What would be your ranking? I personally intend to switch 9 with 11 and that's about it. I think I'm satisfied enough with the rest :) |
Torontonian
06.12.15 | i would also have 12 a little higher, i find it rly rly underrated. :) Brings the feels hard! |
Titan
06.13.15 | 3,2,4,5,6,1,15,12,10,7,8,17,16,11,13,14,18,9,19
9 has dropped significantly over the last decade for me |
Jethro42
06.13.15 | Yeah Power Windows is my last choice with my 4s. It could not be higher than 9. I feel I have another spin to give to that one. It never impressed me that much for some reasons. |
Jethro42
06.13.15 | Interesting, Titan... I'm surprised you put A Farewell to Kings that far...And I need re-listen to both Roll the Bones and Power Windows. I find that your 7 is a bit too low, and your 17 way too high. Vapor Trails is a very enjoyable album imo. I haven't heard the remastered yet. Revisiting Counterparts now. I can see there are a few weak tracks... |
Torontonian
06.13.15 | ya titan whats up with grace so low |
Titan
06.13.15 | there is very little difference between each successive rank......bottom 3 are still incredible |
Jethro42
06.13.15 | RUSH cannot do wrong, agreed. But man, Counterparts needs to move down. I still have to jam both Roll the Bones and Power Windows. Hope I wont have some major corrections to bring to the list :P |
Jethro42
06.13.15 | oh wait it would not be fair to change anything from it since it would undo some of your comments. |
Titan
06.13.15 | RUSH cannot do wrong [2] |
Snowdog808
08.11.15 | RUSH cannot do wrong [3]. Most of the albums are in a pretty nice place aside from Caress of Steel. |
LotusFlower
08.11.15 | Rush's 80 run kinda sucked for the most part. But then again, which prog rock group didn't have a shitty run in the 80s? |
Ovrot
08.11.15 | good list |
Jethro42
08.11.15 | @Snowdog, after couple of repeated listens, it grew more and more on me, even if I don't tend to listen to that album. You are right, I've placed it in a very good position.
@Clover, Rush still rocks in the 80's. It's just that they were more keyboard oriented, and they shortened the lenght of their songs. Like any active prog bands of the 80's, they were exploring new musical territory, as they were under the pressure of their record label to do so.
@Ovrot, cheers! |
Sabrutin
08.11.15 | I would put the debut at least at 13 but except for that I think this is a pretty sweet ranking. I also think that "Available Light" and "Red Tide" from Presto are pretty underrated songs. |
sonictheplumber
08.11.15 | good list |
Jethro42
08.11.15 | ^I have hard times to be objective when it comes to their debut album. It's a good rock and roll album, but it doesn't sound like a Rush album to me. The lack of Neil Peart is also for something, I would say. I'll try to give it a spin with a new ear, to see. Also Red Tide is a great song. Available Light is not bad either. Cheers! |
Jethro42
08.11.15 | Thanks sonic! |
thefloydios
06.01.17 | That top 5 is undeniable, although my exact order is different. Nice to see Power Windows not at the bottom. For me I'd put Clockwork Angels at #6 it grew on me so much over the years |
Jethro42
06.01.17 | I haven't listen to Clockwork Angels that often. Will give another spin to see. |
Titan
06.01.17 | band rules and so do you Jeth |
Jethro42
06.01.17 | I try my best bro! |
GhandhiLion
03.23.21 | where's close to the edge and good times bad times? |
Koris
03.23.21 | Damn, how did I never comment on this earlier? Good list |
JokineAugustus
03.23.21 | Pretty close to my ranking. I'd put counterparts a few higher, but that's about it. |
