05.06.15 | I have 3 or 4 corrections to do into this ranking. Will do in a few minutes. |
Snowdog808
05.07.15 | One of Germany's finest for sure. |
Jethro42
05.07.15 | You're not the first who thinks it on Sputnik, but in fact they're an English band. |
Snowdog808
05.07.15 | I stand corrected then. They are still one of their nation's finest regardless. Pawn Hearts was an awesome album to listen to, and I'm sure I'll be able to say the same about many of their others once I hear them. |
TwigTW
05.07.15 | ^ lol, I thought they were German too. |
Jethro42
05.07.15 | False news are running fast! haha |
Snowdog808
05.07.15 | The band seems pretty underrated these days. |
Jethro42
05.07.15 | That's why I've made that list; to keep them fresh in memory. |
DominionMM1
05.07.15 | jethro man i thought you died. glad you didn't. that's cool. |
Jethro42
05.07.15 | No worries Dom, I'm just less present than usual since a while. I'm never too far :) |
DominionMM1
05.07.15 | never heard of these guys. will check in the near future. |
Jethro42
05.07.15 | Pick up any of the first 11 songs from this list, and see if it's up your alley... |
Frippertronics
05.07.15 | 1 is 1 for sure
would add The Sphinx in the Face |
Onirium
05.07.15 | Having only listened to Pawn Hearts, Godbluff and Still Life, I can't really comment your ranking, except by saying that all my favourites are definitely there. The Sleepwalkers, Man Erg, A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers, Pilgrim and Childlike Faith in Childhood's End certainly showcase their undestated status as masters of prog songwriting.
Where would you recommend me to go next within their discography? |
MrSirLordGentleman
05.07.15 | Dude, 17 is WAY too low, probably their best for me |
Jethro42
05.07.15 | @Fripp, I've considered to add Sphinx, but I finally decided to cut it i favor to ''Lizard Play''
@Onirium, you need ''H to He Wo Am the Only One'' and ''The Least We Can Do is Wave to Each Other. By taking these albums, you will discover what they sound just before Pawn Hearts, and you will appreciate still more the listening of the latter. |
Jethro42
05.07.15 | @SirLord, I pretty much like Arrow, but it's my least favorite off of Godbluff. I confess that 17 is not generous. I could try to take it closer into the list, but not by that much... Lots of classics figures before it. |
Friday13th
05.07.15 | Nice! Man-Erg is my favorite too along with Plague. Arrow would be top 10 for me because of the vocal performance. Rob Halford of Judas Priest said he was inspired by VDGG and on that song it's the most obvious. Not a big fan of Sleepwalkers strangely enough. |
MrSirLordGentleman
05.07.15 | Exactly, the vocals in Arrow are what makes it so cool: the sound of madness and despair |
Jethro42
05.07.15 | Cheers Friday and SirLord.I probably overrated Sleepwalkers, now that I re-listened to it properly. Trying to give another chance to Arrow atm. |
Jethro42
05.07.15 | Aight, I managed to bring Arrow to 8th instead of Sleepwalkers. |
Frippertronics
05.07.15 | listening to Quiet Zone/Pleasure Dome again, and Last Frame is much better than I remember it. It's a really underrated album in the Van der Graaf discography. |
Jethro42
05.07.15 | I only have hard times to get used to that violin that sometimes seems to be delivered randomly. Maybe I need more time to sink in. I relistened to Last Frame, and it's better than a couple of songs from the list. Might fix it. Pay attention to both A Grounding in Numbers and Trisector too. Both have their bunch of nice cuts. |
MeatSalad
05.07.15 | Really need to delve into these guys again, only heard pawn hearts once |
DustyTill
05.07.15 | List needs White Hammer. The end of this song is proto sludge/doom metal. |
Jethro42
05.07.15 | @Meat, try ''H to He'', ''The Least we can do'', ''Godbluff'' and ''Still Life'' too.
@DustyTill, the end of the song is too beautiful for the rest which is nothing too special. |
Frippertronics
05.07.15 | would also add Urban from Vital |
Jethro42
05.07.15 | I didn't consider live albums. Also are you sure song is not from a Peter Hammill' solo album? |
Frippertronics
05.08.15 | nope, I looked and it was a live-only tune that was played as early as 1975. Never done in the studio as far as I know. |
Jethro42
05.08.15 | I thought I would include ''A Louse is not a Home'' for the song was originally written for VdGG's album following Pawn Hearts, an album that because of the band's split never came to be. VdGG used to play it live since then. Song is easily a top 10... |
Jethro42
05.08.15 | Also do you have a link for Urban? |
Frippertronics
05.08.15 | Wasn't "Louse" on a Peter Hammill album?
Urban (the one on Vital has a section from Killer on it) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9L5CKHaZXM |
Jethro42
05.08.15 | Yes, ''Louse'' is on The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage, but what I try to say is that it was meant to be a VdGG song in the first place. So I'd better say it WOULD be easily a top 10 VdGG song...
Your link doesnt work unfortunately. |
Frippertronics
05.08.15 | Alright, that makes sense.
The link works fine to me, but it's on Vital so I'm sure you can find a copy/download and check it out. |
Jethro42
05.08.15 | Please try what I just put on 9. A new found classic. |
thefloydios
06.01.17 | This is one of the bands I still have to get into. Nice list as a guide. I heard they're extremely hard to get into so I've been putting it off lol |
Jethro42
06.01.17 | They're not hard to get into. It's a love or hate affair. Band is centered around keyboards, organ and sax. No guitar save rare exceptions. They are an unconventional, intense, jazz-influenced symphonic progressive band with a dark and angry twist. Instruments are guided by the theatrical, dramatic vocals of Peter Hammill. The structures are based on rhythms instead of being melodious. But there are lots of great melodies to be found. Sometimes it sounds chaotic, but it's controlled chaos. Try the top 20 songs, and I would start with H to He, Who am the only one, if you dig. |
