| Dream Theater Albums Ranked
Not including Change Of Seasons cause that is an EP | | 1 | | Dream Theater Awake
Most people would put the next two albums in the list ahead of this but personally this is the Dream Theater album that I love the most from the opening drum barrage in '6.00' to the haunting closer 'Space-Dye Vest'.
KEY TRACK: Space-Dye Vest | | 2 | | Dream Theater Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory
Possibly the finest concept album ever written, Jordan Rudess adds plenty on his first DT album appearance and the lyrics are better than usual, probably due to the already decided subject matter.
KEY TRACK: Home | | 3 | | Dream Theater Images And Words
Often regarded as the band's true classic - it is very good but at times I feel the production lets it down and James LaBrie's voice is still in need of some mellowing (which is thankfully achieved by 'Awake').
KEY TRACK: Learning To Live | | 4 | | Dream Theater Train Of Thought
The heaviest DT album out there, has a couple of misses but is mostly hit after hit and includes the fantastic instrumental 'Endless Sacrifice'.
KEY TRACK: In The Name Of God | | 5 | | Dream Theater Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
The first half is pretty good and so is the second (which makes up the song 'Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence' itself) but not altogether that impressive, fails to live up to the sum of its parts you could perhaps say.
KEY TRACK: The Glass Prison | | 6 | | Dream Theater Octavarium
Could have done with a bit more time put into it (it sounds like quality control went a bit wrong) as two of the eight tracks are utter garbage, thankfully closer 'Octavarium' is incredible.
KEY TRACK: Octavarium | | 7 | | Dream Theater Systematic Chaos
A bit of editing would be nice, just because they can play like the God of their respective instruments it doesn't mean they have to do it on almost every single song, 'The Ministry Of Lost Souls' is a case in point it would have been perfectly happy ending after about 9 minutes (it drags on for 15 minutes).
KEY TRACK: In The Presence Of Enemies (Parts 1 & 2) | | 8 | | Dream Theater Falling Into Infinity
The label pushed them to make a more commercial album and they suffered for it, there is goodness hidden amongst the murk that populates the majority of the album, especially the Petrucci guitargasm of the otherwise ordinary 'Lines In The Sand'.
KEY TRACK: Trial Of Tears | | 9 | | Dream Theater When Dream And Day Unite
The sound of a band not sure where or what it is attempting, the usual DT ideas are there but unfortunately they didn't work out quite as well as they would on later albums and Charlie Dominici's voice leaves plenty to be desired, not the most memorable of debut records.
KEY TRACK: Ytse Jam | |

10.16.08 | I think SDOIT is their best. Mine would go 5, 2, 3, 6, 7, 1, 4, 9, 8. Everything but Falling Into Infinity and When Dream and Day Unite is between a 4 and a 5 though. | Spamue1G
10.16.08 | Call me typical, I think Images And Words is probably their best. LaBrie isn't always quite there on Scenes From A Memory, though the music does just edge out Images And Words. Nice to see Train Of Thought high on the list, but Endless Sacrifice isn't an instrumental. I keep meaning to get Awake, what I've heard of it is really good. My main problem with Scenes is that it's basically LaBrie's only (IMO) not-fantastic performance.
Also, no A Change Of Seasons? I know you could call it an EP, but I think it would be fair to put on here somewhere (high up)... | elephantREVOLUTION
10.16.08 | lol, godsmack.
i have only listened to metropolis and some of octavarium. i really like this band but have just never gotten around to listening to them that much. | bringonthebreakdown
10.16.08 | 4, 2, 5, 6, 3, 1, 8, 7, 9 here. but that's just my opinion
and you missed A Change Of Seasons EP. Get that shit if you don't have it, it's my favorite 20+ minute epic by them.
great fucking band. | badtaste
10.16.08 | Nice list. Similar to me, being geared towards the older DT works. | bodiesinflight57
10.18.08 | 1. I've no idea why a picture of a Godsmack album has come up at the top of the list.
2. Endless Sacrifice is not an instrumental, Stream Of Consciousness is (mistake on my part).
3. bringonthebreakdown look at the top of the list, I said I'm not including A Change Of Seasons because it's an EP

01.19.09 | i agree wit this list mostly except mine would go SFAM, IaW, SDoIT, Awake, ToT,Octavarium, Systematic Chaos, FiI, WDaDU..
ok so i guess i don't really agree totally lol. well i agree with the second half. i actually think SFAM is labries best vocal performence with the possible exception of images and words. (especially under a glass moon and metropolis) if only he could sing live... | Necrotica
06.01.13 | Godsmack rules agreed | KjSwantko
06.01.13 | The Godsmack cover lol | Necrotica
