Alright, my girlfriend prettymuch listens to anything shitty on the radio, so I promised her I'd try to introduce her to some "different", we shall say, music. I want to get some good tunes without going totally bizarre. Help?
Neutral Milk Hotel
Good suggestions.
The Beatles - Abbey Road
The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
Radiohead - Kid A
Bjork - Homogenic
Muse-Origin of Symmetry
Arcturus- The Sham Mirros.
The Mountain Goats - The Sunset Tree
Ben Folds - Ben Folds Live
Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Great Highway
Minus the Bear - Menos El Oso
dredg and Oceansize
Ugh, some of you have absolutely no pop sensibility at all.
Radiohead - The Bends
Damien Rice - O
Streetlight Manifesto - Everything Goes Numb
Say Anything - ...Is A Real Boy
Brand New - Deja Entendu
Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights
The National - Boxer
Are all good starting points.
Hmmm...anything on the radio? Try these alternatives to genres on the radio:
Pop: Rachel Loy, old Alanis M., Deana Carter
Pop-Punk: Say Anything, Mayday Parade, Blink-182
Mainstream Rap: Pharoahe Monch, Outkast, Eminem (the older, the better), almost any 90's hip-hop...but I doubt she listens to radio rap for its relevancy...
Radio Rock: 10 Years, Radiohead, Muse, 90's stuff (Oasis, Third Eye Blind, etc.)
Harder Radio Rock: Disturbed, Deftones, A Perfect Circle or Tool, System of a Down
Alternative Country: Clark Country, Nickel Creek, Deana Carter (again)
General good music: Fair To Midland, Arcade Fire, Thrice, Brand New, Bright Eyes, Gnarls Barkley, mewithout You
^You realise half the shit you mentioned is the stuff she'll already be listening to?
Stuff he mentioned that she might not have heard and are worth checking out because they're vaguely accessible - the harder rock stuff apart from Disturbed (although Deftones could take some getting used to...same to Tool).
And everything he mentioned in general good music.
Perhaps she does, but he said she listens to "shitty" mainstream stuff, and those artists are ones that I don't find too shitty...so if she's listening to that stuff already, it's a good starting point to get into even better music.
Also...I recommended pop-punk and still forgot some of my favorites, namely Mae, Anberlin, Jimmy Eat World, The Get Up Kids, Days Away and such.
Got one more artist, too: Johnny Cash. Every single person in the world should be able to get down on some Cash.
Worship - Dooom
thx for all the help..
all good suggestions (even Arcturus?), but based on our collective tastes-
i think i'll go somethin like...
and maybe some Anberlin or Jimy Eat World
There's nothing like some quality thought provoking avant garde to light up your day to be honest.
Thrice, Eyes Set To Kill, Stars, 1997 for more realistic indie/pop bands that need to be heard. 3 Inches Of Blood too.
Definitely agree with Deja Entendu. And if it's not too weird; Brother, Sister by mewithoutYou. I've showed them to some really mainstream people who actually really liked them.
