Death Metal '09

u want deths i got u sum
1Ulcerate
Everything is Fire

Fuck the haters, this is the death metal album of the year. Ridiculously intense, the barrage of Immolation inspired destruction this relatively young NZ band spews is overwhelming. 4.5/5
2Ignivomous
Death Transmutation

It seems all the best death metal this year is coming from down under. Ignivomous' demo and EP were amazing, and their debut LP, though taking a bit of time to sink in, is outstanding. With hues of technicality but an overall Incantation like crussshhh, Death Transmutation is fucking tops. 4.2/5
3Portal
Swarth

I seriously did not plan for the top three to come from this side of the world. Seriously. Swarth is murky, Swarth is grimy, Swarth is fucking awesome. 4/5
4Arghoslent/Martial Barrage
Send Forth the Best Ye Breed

Took long enough to leak. Despite Martial Barrage being awesome (their full length Call of the Serapeum is really good, check it) their side of the split pales alongside Arghoslent's four track contribution, which on the whole is as heil worthy as Hornets. This is pop metal at its finest. 4/5
5Stench of Decay
Where Death and Decay Reign

A four track demo from a young Finnish band, this hits all the right spots in regards to old school death metal. Some might claim I've put it too high on this list, but it certainly deserves it. 4/5
6The Chasm
Farseeing the Paranormal Abysm

It was hard to decide which I liked more, this or the new Funebrarum, but The Chasm wins out in terms of longevity. Tyler's review gives a fair enough deion of this, so just check that out. It's a real grower, is all I'll say. 4/5
7Funebrarum
The Sleep of Morbid Dreams

Their first effort was just a whole lot of awesome, and this is no different. 4/5
8Slugathor
Echoes from Beneath

This Finnish band does everything in their power to sound like they're from the 90s, and it pays off. Crushes. 4/5
9Cruciamentum
Convocation of Crawling Chaos

This demo has a very tangible dark atmosphere which is incredibly rare to find done this well. Well worth a listen. 4/5
10Vengeful
The Omnipresent Curse

riffs 4/5
11Embrace of Thorns
Atonement Ritual

satan 3.5/5
12Diocletian
Doom Cult

NZ wtf 3.5/5
13Suffocation
Blood Oath

I could probably put it higher, but here's good. Enjoyable, but they have at least 3 other releases I'd listen to before this. 3.5/5
14Asphyx
Death... The Brutal Way

Solid, if simple. Dudes are fucking old but it doesn't show. Good album. 3.5/5
15Gorod
Process of a New Decline

Lost interest in this really fast but it is a good album. Their previous two are far better though. 3.5/5
16Krypts
Open the Crypt

This should be a little higher but I forgot about it and I can't be bothered rewriting a whole bunch of shit. And then it would be even higher if Stench of Decay didn't exist. 4/5
17Denial
Catacombs of the Grotesque

Solid, very fucking heavy. Got it for free so I'm not complaining. 3.5/5
18Axis Powers
Marching Towards Destruction

Is all right, I'd rather put on Bolt Thrower than bother with this 9 times out of 10 though. 3.5/5
