Omitted from the final list

The staff list doesn't allow compilations, live albums, re-releases or EPs so the first 7 are albums that were disqualified that would have otherwise made my final list (probably). The final section is albums that just barely missed the Top 25 cut.
1Nine Inch Nails
Pretty Hate Machine: 2010 Remaster

Even people that hated the sound of the original have warmed up to this re-recordning. I loved the original and this version just gives more to love.
2Sarah Fimm
Karma Phala

34 tracks of Acoustic rock, indie, trip hop and it's all free on a thumb drive. This collection is probably the coolest way I've seen someone get their music to the masses -- free or not.
Magic & Mayhem

Time has not been kind to Amorphis' first few CDs and this re-recording tries to fix that by using their current (and best) vocalist as well as giving the original songs are auditory facelift.
4Bad Religion
30 Years Live

A free live album that is better than any 'best of' that they've released to date. What's not to love?

This EP didn't sit well with everybody, but the re-creation of some of their songs turned out really good IMO.
Hindsight Vol 2: Reason Revisited

Technical thrash band Anacrusis returns from the dead by re-recording their first two albums so that they actually have a current sound. Great stuff.
7Cruel Black Dove
The Myth and the Sum

Chill, female-fronted electronic alt. rock. I should have been recomending this to people, but never did.
8 ---

These albums just barely missed making the top 25 (in no order)...
9Impaled Nazarene
Road to the Octagon

I've never heard their older stuff, but this is well-produced high energy black metal that doesn't end up sounding like cheese.
The Fool

I don't really know how to describe this... mellow indie rock? I'm probably wrong with the description, but it's good.
11The Ghost Inside

Melodic hardcore that doesn't suck.
A Determinism of Morality

Excellent post metal that just barely missed the top 25.
13God Is An Astronaut
Age of the Fifth Sun

I've never disliked a God is an Astronaut album, and this didn't change anything. They're post rock for those of us that don't want to wait 10 minutes for something to happen.
Diamond Eyes

This hasn't aged well, but it still almost made it.
We Were Exploding Anyway

I love their blend of post rock and electronica and only wish I had heard of these guys earlier in the year.
Fall, Obsidian Night

Excellent funeral doom.
17An Autumn For Crippled Children

One of the few black metal releases that I could stomach this year.
18Unter Null
Moving On

It kind of bothered me, at first, that this didn't make my 25 but the second half of the album is just too similar to the first half... things start to stagnate just the slightest bit.
19Throes of Dawn
The Great Fleet of Echoes

One of those rare surprises. It reminds me of the awesome direction that Tiamat could have taken after "A Deeper Kind of Slumber"
