10.19.10 | idk Bitchfork the screenwriting is damn near flawless and I feel like it captures everything it tries to perfectly. It seems really subtle in how awesome it is. I mean, there's nothing outside of the script that jumped off at me on first viewing that made me go, wow this is one of the best movies of the past 10 years, but at the same time I feel like subsequent views will show something more each time. |

10.19.10 | I'm fine with how subtle it is. I mean at times the irony worked well but for the most part it was just a bunch of events riddled with snide comments and one or two really spectuacularly-developed scenes. Usually with movies that warrant a 95 or higher (Pan's Labyrinth, Saving Private Ryan and Spirited Way, for example), I can't think of a defining scene because the entire movie was so impenetrably fantastic that to call five minutes or two of it the "best" parts of the movie is insulting. Certain areas of plot or character developments can come close to defining a movie but still that reasoning on its own for liking a movie would, for me at least, tell me that it was worth a 60-70. In the case of The Social Network, there was one or two defining scenes that made the movie really enjoyable to me. Otherwise the movie would have probably been in the sixties because, while it was intelligent and relatively entertaining, nothing really wowed me. In essence, the people behind the movie made it really difficult for any characters to develop. You get to see the burgeoning development of the pretentious Zuckerberg, which is relieving, but it doesn't change the fact that I was bored of him about 1/4 of the way through the movie because he was unbelievably one-dimensional. (I realize that if you're arguing that the movie's a docudrama that this isn't so much a flaw on the filmmaker as it is on the subject, but it still affected my outlook on the movie.) Similarly, the minor characters were the most obnoxious wastes of space ever. If this was to portray nihilistic themes, then it did a poor job of exploring the documentation of the modern decadence it hinted at. That's to say the movie was very broad with what its messages were. To me, if a movie can still be subtle, but portray specific themes (as all of my examples of near-perfect movies did), then it marks itself as a truly great film. Character development and a successful plot are still vital, but they tend to follow suit once this mark is laid. Unfortunately, The Social Network hits all the right marks of a great film, but not the fantastic movie that others seem to tout it as. |

10.19.10 | Forgot to mention that Saverin's transformation from an introverted pushover into a character who uses his pre-existing intelligence and newfound strong will to achieve his goals is actually really touching and the way it all unfolded really added to the whole "documentation of the modern decadence" thing. If the playwrights and the others to explore this perspective of the film for a bit longer it would have made a bit of a difference. Essentially, they set it up as a character study but you only study half the book. |

But then I'll weave in axioms about how the music is terrible and lifeless even though it's obvious she's trying to create individual and creative aspects of her life into her work. Essentially, she does a terrible job at doing what she intended. |

I don't know, I may end up agreeing with you, I just think it's a film that takes a few viewings to really get... like all Fincher movies I guess. |
