I'm looking for conscious rap, alternative rap or just fun stuff. Before I even listen to it, though, the beats have to be decent. Don't recommend anything that uses that video game synth shit that you hear in every song on the radio today. An old-skool drum beat, or a piano or bass, or very clever samples like most of the stuff DangerMouse comes out with.
As an example, here's what I'm thinking of looking into next:
Common - "Like Water For Chocolate"
Xzibit - "40 Dayz and 40 Nightz"
Little Brother - "Little Brother"
Snoop Dogg - "Doggystyle"
Bone Thugs 'n' Harmony - "E 1999 Eternal"
something by Ghostface Killah
something by Talib Kweli
something by Atmosphere (either "...Lemons..." or "Seven's Travels")
something by Hi-Tek
Not huge on hip hop but I always find Kanye West, Run DMC and Public Enemy good listens. Need to get that Nas album.
I don't listen to much hiphop/rap but there's a lack of GZA and Wu-Tang here.
Definitely get Doggystyle and some GZA.
Yeah...the missing Wu-Tang is criminal. Realized that after I made my comment above...
Which GZA albums?
Wu-Tang Clan- Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
GZA- Liquid Swords
Mobb Deep- The Infamous
Blackalicious- Blazing Arrow
Eric B. and Rakim- Paid in Full
Slick Rick- The Adventures of Slick Rick
Ghostface Killah- Ironman
MF DOOM- MM... Food
MF GRIMM- American Hunger
Organized Konfusion- Stress: The Extinction Agenda
Deep Puddle Dynamics- The Taste of Rain... Why Kneel
Sage Francis- A Healty Distrust
Pharoahe Monch is the shit.
Army of the Pharaohs
Hand Over Fist
A Tribe Called Quest
Dan The Automator
Del The Funkee Homosapien
Dan Le Sac Vs. Scroobius Pip
Check some of those out, I'm sure you'll like a lot of it.
A Tribe Called Quest
Sivion, Gabriel Teodros, M-E-T-H-O-D, Json, Warcloud...
Sandpeople - Honest Racket.
Awesome fucking list by the way.
You can't miss Nujabes.
Most underrated rap EVER.
Go look him up on sputnik.
DO IT NOW
Detroit is where it's at right now for new hip-hop...
Black Milk - Tronic
Elzhi - The Preface
Guilty Simpson - Ode to the Ghetto
Invincible - Shapeshifters
And of course, anything produced by J Dilla.
Handsome Boy Modeling School
A Tribe Called Quest
Eminem and flobots for the win =D
For Little Brother check out The Listening and the Chittlin' Circuit.
Two of my favorites are Cage-Hell's Winter and Cannibal Ox-The Cold Vein.
Pretty Much anything by Aesop Rock and the Roots is worth checking out.
Wu Tang Clan has already been pointed out, but I haven't seen anyone mention Raekwon-Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, which is a classic.
RJD2 is good for instrumental stuff, and if you like it check out Soul Position, which is his group with Blueprint.
And since you're looking for something by Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek you should definitely get Reflectioin Eternal, which is their collaboration.
I'm pretty burnt out on "conscious" hip hop so I won't be recommending much of that but...
if you like that Chamillionaire, you need to get UGK - Ridin' Dirty, UGK - Underground Kingz, and Killer Mike - I Pledge Allegiance to the Grind II. All are southern hip hop with flow.
Second the Wu-Tang; while I think they have a tendency to be overrated, the debut album is incredible, as are Raekwon's first solo album, GZA's first solo album, and Ghostface - Supreme Clientele and Fishscale (and most everything else by him, I'm a huge Ghost fan)
Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury is one of my favorite hip hop albums of all time.
Big L - Lifestylez ov da Poor and Dangerous; Big L is one of the most underrated rappers of all time.
Big Pun - Capital Punishment (completes the trilogy of incredible rappers with Big in their name)
A Tribe Called Quest
Curren$y is an amazing up and coming rapper, doesn't have any albums but numerous mixtapes
Eric B. and Rakim
J Dilla (Donuts is ESSENTIAL)
Jay-Z - Blueprint
KMD - Black Bastards (MF Doom before he was MF Doom)
Kool G Rap and DJ Polo
Mobb Deep - The Infamous (Again, one of my favorites of all time)
I don't know if you'd like him, but Cam'ron is basically my favorite rapper alive, so I have to mention him. Try Purple Haze and keep an open mind. If you like, that, definitely cop The Diplomats - Diplomatic Immunity Vol. 1
oh by first GZA album I mean Liquid Swords not Words from the Genius
and God Loves Ugly and the Lucy Ford EPs are way better than Lemons or Seven's Travels
ok i'm done now
I think that's sort of known...
Thanks for the recs, guys! I'll definitely check out a few of these (after I listen to and get a feel for them on YouTube ;-)...). I'm excited for Ghostface Killah and Wu-Tang, especially. I'm already looking forward to Little Brother, too, because he reminds me of Pharoahe Monch.
Thanks for the specific album recs, especially! I appreciate it all!
If anyone else is willing to comment, I'm still all ears!
Also...everyone on Sputnik should hear at least a few of the albums on this list. I'll especially point out the lesser known ones: Haiku d'Tat and Asheru and Blue Black. Check those out if you guys want something different.
GCH had an album before the Papercut Chronicles called "For the Kids" If you can find it, get it. It's actually pretty ill, their best if you ask me
