Planewreck's Day Trip To Fun Fun Fun Fest

This was Saturday evening. A week previous, I found out that Boris and Flying Lotus were scheduled against each other. A little snooping unveiled that Boris would be playing a free show with Tera Melos and Russian Circles on Saturday evening. I arrived with a few minutes left before Boris to find the line out the door for a block. Dejected, I made a full circle around the building to reach my car only to find a few kids standing at a back entrance with the door open, watching the band get ready. I stood around mere feet from the stage as Boris began. Turns out I was standing at a makeshift VIP entrance-- people leave, VIP goes in. The doorman took pity on me (stoned, alone) and allowed me entrance. I finished the set in the middle of the crowd. Good times. Also: caught tail-end of set following Flying Lotus (see: below). #goslingsighting2
2Zero Boys

First show for Sunday having missed G-Side (who are playing a free show tonight in town-- huzzah!). I had never heard these guys but they were my friend's "middle school band" so I went with him. Great '80s punk stuff, lots of fist-pumps to be had.

Followed Zero Boys on the black stage. Brought the heavy.

I saw Baths back at SXSW and his sets were pretty much outsized versions of his LP, which was fucking great. He seemed really excited to have drawn such a large crowd at Fun Fest and responded with a show heavy on brostep. Which, fine, this is fun and all dancing with everyone. But what is great about 'Cerulean,' Baths' debut, is how he trades in dubstep-kitchen-sink pandering for Flying Lotus' lucid flow. After a while, this particular show dropped the fluidity for a barrage of noises; less "composed," more "thrown together." I certainly had fun, but there were maybe three occasions where I really noticed how GOOD a song was, not just how crazy it got.
5Del tha Funkee Homosapien

The connecting act between Baths and Flying Lotus. I wasn't expecting much, but this was a great, funky show. He even played "Virus" off Deltron 3030, and told the crowd that he and Dan finished the new Deltron 3030. "Once we got together, it took a week to finish. After all this time... you know I gotta be in the mood." Fuck yeah. Also played Gorillaz track.
6Flying Lotus

I probably should have prepared for this, standing in the middle of the crowd right in front of the stage, but I nearly died amidst the chaos. Can't we all just jump in one place? Need we crowd surf, or gyrate to the left where young, frail bodies might be in harm's way? In any case, great show, but having nearly vomited and/or broken a leg, I said farewell to my companions and vaulted over the fellow in front of me for freedom, becoming what I detest to save myself. #goslingsighting1
7The Black Lips

Fun show. Highlights: Guitarist puking with nonchalance; setting guitar on fire; Terrence Malick filming the crowd with Ryan Gosling. #goslingsighting3

The most un-Slayerly Slayer show I'll probably ever attend only this once, but damn they were good.
9Odd Future

SUCKED. Why can't they fix their fucking show? Just *sound good.* That is all we want. Really terrible, not even worth watching Tyler blow dick.
10Ryan Gosling

What a cutie. Walking around, being hip. Caught him singing "Clint Eastwood" standing next to Del.
