| Australian Underground, Pt. 1
I love a sunburned country. Welcome to Australia, and welcome to my list of twenty-five artists from Australia that deserve more recognition both on the site and overall. I've tried to cover as much ground as I possibly can - there's pop, rock, metal, funk, hardcore, folk, etc; so I hope I've done alright. Of course, there will be more of these lists to come. So here's the deal: Each artist deion is a link to their MySpace profile so you can check out their songs, as well as three bands/artists that have at least a similar sound to the act in question - kind of an "if you love W, X and Y, you'll love Z" kind of thing. Enjoy! And please comment telling me what you think of each act. | 1 | The Middle East

09.26.09 | Love it, 23 more artists for me to check out. Lolled at 3, how they have their own unique sound. Its completely true, they do, you can't pin them down into any one genre really. | Spare
09.26.09 | 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 12, 16, 20, 25 are great | Vooligan
09.26.09 | 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 11 and 16.
Eleventh currently have album of the year. Everyone on this site should go check them out. | rasputin
09.26.09 | great list idea atavan, kudos | Spare
09.26.09 | i take it what i suggested will be in pt.2 | AtavanHalen
09.26.09 | Plus other stuff | DaveyBoy
09.26.09 | Kudos for the work you have put in on this list DavID. Well done.
The fact that I haven't heard of about half of these acts is a testament that you've gone fairly underground here. | Spare
09.26.09 | holy shit 24 rules | ultradolphins
09.26.09 | I saw DZ back last year and I have to be honest... thought it was pretty not that good. Green Green Green plays the same sort of stuff but I think they are better.
Duane Barry are really good too! Such young guys would love to play with them
Are you coming up to Sydney for the To the North 12 inch release shows in October? | taylormemer
09.26.09 | I like. | AtavanHalen
09.26.09 | ultradolphins - Yeah, I hope so! It sounds like it's gonna be a killer gig. | Eclectic
09.26.09 | Its always astounded me the sheer diversity of music we humans have created.
If you think about it, we have most probably created in excess of a million relatively different songs. I wouldn't be surprised if the number got to 10 million. And we're still going. Am I the only person that is staggered by that figure? | AtavanHalen
09.26.09 | Humans go alright | ultradolphins
09.26.09 | Awesome I will be playing at the Vera an To the North and When Chimps Attack show/ Do say hello if you wish I play bass in a band called bare arms. Not good enough to be on this list but still.
By the way Vera is also very good | AtavanHalen
09.26.09 | Yeah, Vera are killer. Hung out with those guys when I followed the La Dispute tour with them and Epitomes for two days. | taylormemer
09.26.09 | Its always astounded me the sheer diversity of music we humans have created.

Yeah, not really.
It's all just permutations of the same notes, over different instruments. The combinations are essentially endless. | AtavanHalen
09.26.09 | Smile, Jakey. | Eclectic
09.26.09 | While that is true, note that only certain combinations work. Like our language, only certain letters strung together create words, and music is the same, except we have far more "correct" combinations of notes than we do for our own language | taylormemer
09.26.09 | It doesn't matter. What sounds good and what doesn't is irrelevant. Even if we were restricted as you say we are, the combinations are endless, because music is dependent on time, and time is eternal. Geez man, go read my Messiaen review. | AtavanHalen
09.26.09 | Jake fancies himself as a bit of an intellectual, y'see | scyther
09.26.09 | If the cosmos has any sense of originality, it will die. | taylormemer
09.26.09 | Indubitably. | scyther
09.26.09 | Is there still time if it has nothing to measure? | Eclectic
09.26.09 | I read the review and enjoyed it, I'm not surprised you fancy yourself as a bit of an intellectual.
@scyther: Yes, I believe there is, just because humans have no way of controlling and measuring it does not mean it doesn't exist. | AtavanHalen
09.26.09 | So is anyone actually listening to the bands or is this just gonna be Jake pleasuring himself? | scyther
09.26.09 | Humans have no way of controlling time as it is now. | Eclectic
09.26.09 | hahaha, I'm listening to 1 and 3 and about to start listening to 11 | Eclectic
09.26.09 | Technically no we can't, but we can alter our perception of time, which is one step closer. | Vooligan
09.26.09 | People need to listen to 16, they are amazing. | xNintendoCorex
09.26.09 | you should check out 'ghoul' dave.
could also do with quiet steps on here mmmhmmmm
i saw cloud control for free last week hahaha, they werent too bad live. | Masochist
09.26.09 | Dead Letter Circus reminds me a lot of Sleep Parade (another "underground" Aussie band). | AtavanHalen
09.26.09 | Yeah, I'm pretty sure they've toured together at some point. | YouAreMySilence
09.26.09 | The Forest are pretty rad. | Eclectic
09.26.09 | 1 are now selling their EP "The Recordings Of The Middle East" for $1.00 here
http://digital.thinkindie.com/search/release.php?x=release_info&release_id=62182
It will also be on iTunes in a month's time.
BLATANT ADVERTISING FTW!! =D | AtavanHalen
09.27.09 | One dollar is a damn good deal, kids | Eclectic
09.27.09 | Unfortunately its not available in aus, just tried to get it and got told that, bastards.
| AtavanHalen
09.27.09 | Not a problem, my good man. Skidaddle along to your local record store and they'll be able to order it in for you; it's $14.95 RRP. Failing that, you can get it off iTunes. | Eclectic
09.27.09 | Yeah, I'll probably go for iTunes, when it comes out in late October. Its definitely worth the money, no matter what you pay for it. | AtavanHalen
09.27.09 | Oh, it comes out in October for the US. It's already available in Australia. | Eclectic
09.27.09 | Ahhhh, ok then, bloody hell, I'm going to go pick it up now. Brilliant. | AtavanHalen
09.27.09 | Checked out any more on the list? | Eclectic
09.27.09 | yep, checked out 11, Sydonia are awesome | AtavanHalen
09.27.09 | Yeah, they've got a lot going for them; saw them opening for Slipknot last year. | Eclectic
09.27.09 | Serious? My mate went to see Slipknot last year but he never mentioned Sydonia, I'll have to talk to him about that. | Eclectic
09.27.09 | The iTunes download for TME is missing Pig Food, The fall of man, and Tsietsi, so I'll have to listen to them seperately.
| xNintendoCorex
09.27.09 | i thought the re-release of the ep was without them?
the original pressing had them but i have a feeling they took them off completely | Eclectic
09.27.09 | You're probably right, shame too | AtavanHalen
09.27.09 | Whatever you're getting, you know you're getting quality. Also, Michael, they'll be in Canberra in a couple of weeks if you're willing to make the trek. | Eclectic
09.27.09 | Depends on how much, and when. If it costs anything over 10 than I'm out, my budget is stretched as it is, and if its on the 9th, 10th or 11th Oct than I can't go, busy that whole weekend. If it weren't for those two things than I'd jump on that, it'd be awesome. | Eclectic
09.27.09 | Also, I just finished listening to it, awesome band, great music. | StreetlightRock
09.27.09 | dave you should check out perth's hidden shoal recordings. they sign some of the best experemental/post-rock acts in Australia. | Eclectic
09.27.09 | My parents have just expressed a great interest in getting to that concert Dave, and its on the 8th too, so I'm free.
I'm so going to that concert =D | Eclectic
09.27.09 | I have to retract that last statement, turns out they're coming 2 days later than I read, misread my godamn calendar. So no concert. | Eclectic
09.27.09 | fuck its been an off couple of days for me. | AtavanHalen
09.27.09 | At least you got your parents into TME; well done! If you're enjoying TME, I recommend checking out 18 and 20 on this list :) | Jim
09.27.09 | sick list david
i'm gonna check out some of the ones i haven't heard, which is a lot | Eclectic
09.27.09 | ooh, will do, judging by your 'similar artists' this should be good | AtavanHalen
09.27.09 | Hope you dig it :D | Eclectic
09.27.09 | They're brilliant, thanks heaps :D | AtavanHalen
09.27.09 | 60 posts :D | Eclectic
09.27.09 | lol, here's 61.
I just went through the first list I put up on Sputnik and came up with 2 more recs for your next Australian Underground list.
The Idea Of North (shroom will back me up on this, they're an A Capella group from canberra, all incredible singers)

| xNintendoCorex
09.27.09 | indeed, listen to the man.
the idea of north are pretty good. | Eclectic
09.27.09 | What do you think of me doing a review of their debut? or would you like the honors? | xNintendoCorex
09.27.09 | i dont have any of their records man, ive only ever seen them live which is quite an experience!
its all yours man | Eclectic
09.27.09 | Awesome, yeah, I saw them live a few years back at a Christmas Carol concert, they had the whole audience entranced | AtavanHalen
09.27.09 | Thanks for the recs, Michael; will check them out and may well put them in the next installment. Have decided that Australian Underground, Pt. 2 will be up in about two weeks. Considering doing the list monthly. | Eclectic
09.27.09 | Awesome, hopefully we can get more American people into these bands as they definitely deserve more coverage. | Douglas
09.28.09 | I know it's probs on the next list but Gurrumul needs some cred! | TheyTookOurJobs
11.17.09 | sydonia is sick
vera sound really good | Eclectic
07.10.10 | Bumping this list because there's a lot of good stuff here. | Dryden
07.10.10 | wheres the drone and sludge | Eclectic
