| Bands I Should Like But Actually Dislike
This is a list of bands that I "should" be able to dig based on my other musical tastes, but I don't.
(made this an album list for the sake of being able to add comments, the albums don't mean anything) | 1 | | Tool Lateralus
People call these guys "progressive" and compare them to King Crimson all the time, but last time I checked, King Crimson wasn't some boring 90's alt. metal band with a whiny castrate for a singer. | 2 | | Porcupine Tree In Absentia
Even if PT are, unlike Tool, "truely progressive", they always include those "heavy" parts into their songs that sometimed tread the waters of, well, 90's alternative or "Nu" metal a bit too much for me and even though it prolly isn't true, I always get the feeling they're just doing this to be "popular with the kids". | 3 | | The Mars Volta Frances The Mute
I mean, I like their sound basically, but they always deliver too much too soon. Some people get obsessed with them, but they just annoy me. | 4 | | Mayhem De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Mayhem are, to me, one of these bands where the history is more interesting than the actual music. But maybe I just don't get them, but I like the music of Burzum, Darkthrone and Emperor far more. | 5 | | Opeth Blackwater Park
Sounds like regular melodic death metal (not exactly my favorite metal subgenre) with some mellotron and songs that are way too long for their own good to me. | |

04.25.07 | Note that this list contains tons of unpopular opinions. Please don't go all flamey on my ass. | IsItLuck?
04.25.07 | who compared tool to king crimson? | DeadToPain
04.25.07 | ^^ someone really stupid. | SynGates
04.25.07 | I dont mean to flame or anything...but you're wrong about 5 imo.
I personally do not classify Opeth as Melodeath at all, especially "regular" melodeath....they are simply progressive metal. And you can never get into them if you keep in the back of your head that the same song is still playing, you just have to listen to it and appreciate it for what it is. | Yazz_Flute
04.25.07 | ^^
yeah, opeth aren't melodeath, if you want melodeath, check out insomnium,or in flames even.
Opeth kicks fucking ass btw | Slaapkamers
04.25.07 | Yeah, Mayhem suck. | Cravinov13
04.25.07 | I feel sorry for you as a person for not liking these bands or albums. | jrowa001
04.25.07 | 4 i can understand, but i fell bad you cant get into the other bands. opeth are my fav band ever so i believe everbody should love them too haha. PT just write some of the most ambient prog rock ive heard....WIlson is an ecxellent songwriter | Doppelganger
04.25.07 | NO. | Isola
04.25.07 | Have to agree with all except Mars Volta. Especially Blackwater Park, what's really the fuss? | TheStarclassicTreatment
04.25.07 | Yeah my best friend thinks Opeth are boring? there not at all melodic death metal, they incorporate progressive mood changes with ambient slow parts and death metal assaults :)
I agree with mars volta, habent heard anything by mayhem yet (tho i have planned to for sum time) but tool and PT also rule imo | samthebassman
04.25.07 | Tool>King Crimson | Eakflanderyof
04.25.07 | Yea, Opeth are nowhere close to melo-death. Mayhem suck, though. You are right about Burzum and Emperor kicking their ass in the black metal department. I've never heard Porcupine Tree, but I agree with Tool and The Mars Volta. The Mars Volta are one of the most boring bands ever. | Thor
04.26.07 | 1 and 5 are better than you. Easily. | Jimmy
04.26.07 | I completley agree with #1, I can't stand Tool | TheHamburgerman
04.26.07 | It looks like a pain to have such a sad taste.
Ah well, at least you don't like #3. | ValiumMan
04.26.07 | @Cravinov13&Hamburgerman: Everyone likes different music. You can't have a "bad" or "good" taste. I might as well say you have a "sad" or "bad" taste for liking these bands I don't like, but I don't think so, cos you have your own taste and I have mine. And why the hell do you feel "sorry for me as a person". I'm not some retard!
Syngates on the other gave me some nice advice on Opeth. I think I might listen to them again with your comment in mind, and then see if I like them.
| Yazz_Flute
05.26.07 | yeah, opeth will grow on you with time, i loved them right a way, but li love them more with every listen.
So with that, i defiantely disagree with 2 and 5, both great. I guess i'd have to diagrewe with 1 as well. The other two i haent heard much of at all. | Itsonlyme
11.26.17 | I never were able to get into Tool. And I agree: Mayhem are cheesy shockrockers. Do yourself the favour to learn to appreciate Opeth! | Demon of the Fall
11.26.17 | Opeth are not a ‘regular melodeath band’, it’s ok not to like stuff that’s popular but that genre classification is just plain wrong. In fact a lot of people who’re indifferent to melodeath love Opeth, they transcend archetypical definition & should be judged separately instead. Progressive metal is fine. | BlackwaterPork
11.26.17 | Yup opeth aren't melodeath | Ocean of Noise
11.26.17 | There are pretty prominent melodeath elements in Opeth's first 2 albums but yeah, they really aren't melodeath later on.
If you want to be more sold on Mayhem, you should check out Live in Leipzig. The vocal style is more standard bm and the songs sound great. |
