SloppyMilkshake 02.17.11	The fact that anybody actually refers to indie as if it's any sort of specific genre is pretty dumb. The fact that you could call Animal Collective, Wilco, and Pavement indie acts and yet they sound completely different from one another may be a hint that it's just about as specific as a term like "alternative rock", or, "pop". At any rate, it's better for the site to be more eclectic than myopic. Even though I'm relatively new in terms of reviewing and comments, I've lurked this site for a few years and I've seen it change. I think the user tastes here are generally very broad, and Sputnik definitely has its own share of "legendary albums" which makes it a unique community. Just because Pitchfork has some tastes that it shares with this site, doesn't mean it's turning into Pitchfork. The main complaint against those guys is with their reviews (which are often pretentious, elitist, and ridiculously hyperbolic), and the way in which they hype bands, basically shoving them down people's throats and reinforcing their tastes with an elitist attitude. If anything, I'd say that if this site is at all like Pitchfork, its within the metal community, which is more or less quite elitist.

Metal" meant that a lot of people were viewing ALL indie music as the same, when in fact, it covers ground as various as country, rock, pop, soul, electronic, experimental, avant-garde, etc. etc. My initial arguments were to show that people who were complaining that the tastes here have shifted from metal to indie were basically saying they don't appreciate any other kind of music other than metal, seeing as indie incorporates so many different genres and is, in and of itself, not really a genre so much as it is various trends and influences within a particular music community. So in other words, Sputnik's tastes haven't shifted from "metal to indie", but instead, just grew to incorporate many more genres of music (as is to be expected as its user base grows)

Butkuiss 02.19.11	I've really only been around here for a year (lurked for two), but even then I've seen a change. Metal seems to be less dominating around Sputnik nowadays. And that's not necessarily a bad thing; when I came here I was an elitist metalhead who wouldn't listen to anything but metal. Now, I'm listening to everything from hip-hop to jazz to drum n bass to post-rock. I think it's just that people have gradually broadened their tastes. And that's not to say Sputnik's metal scene is dead-it's far from it. It's just not as all-encompassing as before.
