A Great Funeral For The Folkin' Metal Tournament
What started off so strong has seemingly withered away into oblivion. As we light the pyre and send the remnants of this tourney to Valhalla, here is what we will be playing. |
1 | | Korpiklaani Karkelo
Where the band truly hit their "party" phase. Although pretty basic as far as songwritting goes, the album features enough catchy and fun tunes to warrant a spot on any metalhead's party playlist.
Recommended track: Vodka |
2 | | Alestorm Back Through Time
After a strong first album and a shaky sophomore release, the band abandon all pretense of trying and let themselves go and craft what is easily their funnest album yet.
Recommended track: Shipwrecked |
3 | | Black Messiah Of Myths and Legends
While still maintaining a distinctly "fun" aspect to their sound, these guys make the style sound much more legitimate through their use of German lyrics and their ability to craft songs that sound like they were pulled straight out of a germanic pub.
Recommended track : Sauflied |
4 | | Alestorm Captain Morgan's Revenge
The band's most "serious" and well regarded release. With this one you can sorta try to convince your trv metal buddies that you're listening to thrash.
Recommended tracks: Captain Morgan's Revenge |
5 | | Equilibrium Sagas
Is this party folk metal? Is it not? It sort of straddles the line at time but one thing is certain: it's epic as all hell. Apparently Germans know how to craft their folk m/
Recommended track : Unbesiegt (possibly the catchiest, funnest song ever) |
6 | | Korpiklaani Korven Kuningas
These guys have built quite a (bad) reputation for themselves as being a bunch of generic folk metallers more intent on partying than writing memorable music. However, before they discovered money and beer, they could actually write some decent, meaningful tunes.
Recommended track: Metsamies |
7 | | Eluveitie Slania
I've seen these guys twice and, although they could barely get all their members onstage (kudos for the use of real folk instruments), they still manage to captivate the audience through their meaningful and passionate performances.
Recommended track : Slania's Song |
8 | | Eluveitie Everything Remains As It Never Was
Recommended track: Quoth The Raven |
9 | | Eluveitie Helvetios
Recommended track: Havoc |
10 | | Finntroll Blodsvept
Polka and metal? Don't knock it til you try it. These guys are truly unique within the genre and manage to craft undeniably catchy tunes without sinking into the overdone stereotypes rampant elsewhere.
Recommended track:Mordminnen |
11 | | Arkona Goi, Rode, Goi!
Russia's answer to Eluveitie. This album is chockfull of songs that are often both catchy yet full of a passion for myth and history they invoke.
Recommended track: Yarilo |
12 | | Dalriada Ígéret
Hungary's answer to Arkona. Dalriada play a similar style of female-fronted folk metal but tone down on the black metal aspect a little.
Recommended track : Hajdutanc |
13 | | Finntroll Jaktens Tid
Much like Korpiklaani, Finntroll weren't always as happy-go-lucky as their newer albums would like you to believe.
Recommended track: Title track |
14 | | Metsatoll Äio
Probably the manliest folk metal band out there. Thick riffs and deep chants accompanied by a variety of traditional Estonian instruments and legends.
Recommended track: Vaid Vaprust |
15 | | Primordial To the Nameless Dead
I may have lied about Metsatoll being the manliest. Primordial definitely give them a run for their money especially on this triumphant mammoth of an album. Play this as you march home victorious from your son's little league game.
Recommended track: Heathen Tribes |
16 | | Tyr By the Light of the Northern Star
The closest thing to true Vikings you will ever witness nowadays. Much like Primordial, no actual folk instruments are present, however the band crafts strong, melodic tales of olden battles.
Recommended track: By the Sword in my Hand |
17 | | Moonsorrow Kivenkantaja
Probably the band's most "epic" sounding album. Featuring epic crescendos of horns interspersed with mystical black metal segments.
Recommended track: Raunioilla |
18 | | Metsatoll Terast Mis Hangund Me Hinge 10218
In case you still needed a little more help growing your beard.
Recommended track: Metsaviha 1&2 |
19 | | Irminsul Irminsul
A very nice album that combines the more elegant aspects of folk with the drive and power of black metal.
Recommended Track : Vakaren |
20 | | Tyr Eric The Red
Recommended track : Regin Smidur |
21 | | Moonsorrow Verisakeet
A darker step in Moonsorrow's catalogue but a fantastic combination of folk and black metal. No other band has managed to replicate their signature mystical take on the combo.
Recommended track : Haaska |
22 | | Wintersun Wintersun
Take classic era Children of Bodom, remove yows and replace with elves and stars and dragons and shit.
Recommended track: Winter Madness |
23 | | Ensiferum Ensiferum
Folk metal tends to forget how to riff. Ensiferum are here to fix that.
Recommended track : Hero in a Dream |
24 | | Ensiferum Iron
There was a time when Jaari had so many riffs it would take a great many albums to contain them. It was a time of wealth and legend that he often reminisces over whilst sitting in his crowd-funded sauna.
Recommended Track: Iron |
25 | | Primordial The Gathering Wilderness
Because your son can't win all of his little league games :( |
26 | | Agalloch The Mantle
One of the most talked about albums on this site and rightfully so. There is not much more I can say about it that would do it justice. A truly monumental release.
Recommended track : In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion |
27 | | SIG:AR:TYR Sailing the Seas of Fate
Acoustic folk that borders on ambient at times, sprinkled with passages of bleak black metal. No other album creates the feeling on walking a doomed journey quite like this one.
Recommended track: Dreaming of the Dawn |
28 | | Moonsorrow V: Havitetty
Moonsorrow's crowning achievement. In this record, everything they have worked on coalesces together into two monumental tracks of brooding folk and black metal.
Recommended track: The first one |
29 | | Falkenbach Ok Nefna Tysvar Ty
Meditative mixture of black and folk metal.
Recommended track: Vanadis |
30 | | Primordial A Journey's End
Let's all take a moment to remember Primordial were a (great) band for many, many years before Gathering was ever released.
Recommended track : Journey's End |
31 | | SIG:AR:TYR Godsaga
Having started off as a completely acoustic project, SIG:AR:TYR slowly experimented and evolved into one of the most fascinating modern folk black metal acts.
Recommended track: Godsaga |
32 | | Zuriaake Afterimage of Autumn
A brooding mix of Filosofem era Burzum with Japanese folk.
Recommended track : Desolated Mountain |
33 | | Ifing Against This Weald
Doing the Moonsorrow thing better than Moonsorrow's last album.
Recommended track : Realms Forged |
34 | | Kroda Fimbulvinter
What Drudkh is to fall, this album is to winter. Conjures up images of cold Ukrainian landscapes through distorted guitars and flutes.
Recommended track: The Beginning Of Winter Night Of Oskorei |
35 | | Drudkh Autumn Aurora
Speak of the devil. While Kroda focuses on the Ukrainian winter, Drudkh paints beautiful pictures of their autumn.
Recommended track : Summoning the Rain |
36 | | Summoning Minas Morgul
Because you can't like black metal without being an LotR nerd (pretty sure that's why Varg killed Euronymus).
Recommended track: The Passing of the Grey Company |
37 | | Burzum Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Det Some en Gang Var is a total folk bm jam and one of the best at that.
Recommended track: you really have to ask? |
38 | | Drudkh Estrangement
Leaves behind some of the folkier aspects yet still manages to retain their signature atmosphere.
Recommended track : Solitary Endless Path |
39 | | Downfall of Nur Umbras de Barbagia
An absolutely stunning release from this year. Brooding, mystical and engaging, this band is all the proof anyone should need that the genre is far from dead.
Recommended Track : The Golden Age |
40 | | Myrkgrav Trollskau, Skromt og Kolabrenning
"Think of a mix between early Borknagar and Enslaved with some traditional folk instruments thrown in and a mixture of harsh and clean vox. m/" |
41 | | Nokturnal Mortum Goat Horns
Somehow this is so cheesy it transcends cheese and ends up ruling.
Recommended Track: Veles' Scrolls |
42 | | Slavland Zapomniane kurhany
Raw and furious black metal riffs accompanied by traditional folk. All fans of BM need apply. |
43 | | Estatic Fear A Sombre Dance
BEautiful mix of black/doom/folk/classical.
Recommended track : Chapter I |
44 | | Dornenreich Durch Den Traum
A strange band that mixes all sorts of influences and creates a sort of mystical black metal melting pot full of odd German spoken word and unpredictable twists and turns.
Recommended track: III |
45 | | Ex Deo Romulus
Like a Roman Nile with horns.
Recommended track: Romulus |
46 | | Ex Deo Caligvla
More horns, more glory.
Recommended track: I, Caligvla |
47 | | The Flight Of Sleipnir Essence of Nine
Imagine Agalloch got really, really high one day while listening to some Sabbath.
Recommended track : Upon This Path We Tread |
48 | | The Flight Of Sleipnir Lore
Recommended track : Of Words and Ravens |
49 | | Kauan Pirut
Very underappreciated on here. This band creates absolutely beautiful folk laden doom metal. Extremely powerful and emotive in both the musical and vocal aspects.
Recommended track: IV |
50 | | Leech [US] Ten Black Hymns
Kind of a stretch to call this folk bm but this band rules and gets no love on here. Fast paced, in your face, punk influenced black metal interspersed with folky acoustic passages. The band somehow makes the odd dichotomy work like a charm and delivers riff after pounding riff.
Recommended track: Hymn 5 |
51 | | Les Discrets Septembre Et Ses Dernières Pensées
Beautiful metallic post-rock that brings to mind the richness of the earth and the chill of autumn.
Recommended track : L'échappée |
52 | | The Night Watch The Night Watch
Jazzy and folky instrumental prog metal. A true breath of fresh air in the scene. Features the guitarist and violinist from the fantastic neofolk band Musk Ox.
Recommended track: Courts of the East |
53 | | October Falls The Womb of Primordial Nature
This band was actually pretty big on here for a while and has seemingly sunk into obscurity. Time to change this! October Falls made his name as an acoustic guitar driven neofolk act before making the switch to neofolk/black metal. A stunning step into the genre.
Recommended track: I |
54 | | October Falls A Collapse of Faith
Recommended track : A Collapse of Faith Part 2 |
55 | | Orphaned Land Mabool (The Story of the Three Sons...)
Another gem in the prog metal genre. Gorgeous melting pot of traditional middle eastern folk music and progressive metal all put together into a mammoth of a concept album that would have Opeth nodding their heads in approval.
Recommended track : Halo Dies |
56 | | Petrychor Dryad
A folkier take on the powerful cascadian BM sound. Gorgeous acoustic passages meet flurries of the fiercest tremolo picking and blast beats.
Recommended track : Dryad (I Make my Home) |
57 | | Saor Aura
I can only imagine the shit that would have been taken on this list if I forgot to include this very recent addition. It certainly deserves it's place amongst the greats in the genre as it seamlessly fuses celtic folk passages and black metal in a refreshing take on the genre that doesn't sound this good very often.
Recommended track: Pillars of the Earth |
58 | | Solstafir Svartir Sandar
Possibly the first appearance of post metal on this list. This mammoth of an album brings out the best of the genre as it goes through beautiful swells and reprieves while being pushed forward by a strong vocal performance.
Recommended track: Fjara |
59 | | Summoning Dol Guldur
This list could never be complete with only a single Summoning album. On this one we see Summoning refine their keyboard driven Tolkien metal into a more brooding and atmospheric beast that retains all of the qualities of their previous work.
Recommended track: Nightshade Forests |
60 | | Summoning Stronghold
Recommended track: Where Hope and Daylight Dies |
61 | | Peste Noire La Sanie des siecles - Panegyrique de la
This list has made me realise just how vague the term folk metal really is. Is this folk metal? I think the medieval influence that pervades the record definitely gives a nod in that direction.
Recommended track : Dueil angoisseus (Christine de Pisan, 1362-1431) |
62 | | Agalloch Ashes Against the Grain
Also definitely less folky than the previous two, Agalloch pulls together all their influences into a tighter knit package and ends up releasing the best album of their career in the process.
Recommended track: Falling Snow |
63 | | Forest of Shadows Where Dreams Turn to Dust EP
A dark and brooding slab of folk doom metal. Think a folkier Shape of Despair with some clean vocals thrown in and you should have sort of an idea of how this sounds.
Recommended track : Eternal Autumn |
64 | | Люди Осени Восстание
Another slab of depressive doom with flourishes of folk. This one features spoken lyrics entirely in Russian that carry plenty of emotion whether you understand them or not.
Recommended track : Title track |
65 | | Bathory Hammerheart
Essentially kick started the Viking metal genre. Folk metal as a whole owes this album more than it could ever hope to repay.
Recommended tracks: All of it |
66 | | Ulver Bergtatt - Et eeventyr i 5 capitler
Another seminal release that has done more than could ever be stated in such a blurb for blackened folk metal everywhere.
Recommended tracks: All |
