| MUSIC: tectac's Top 25 Brand New Songs (Updated 5-Jun-2019)
5-Jun-2019 Update! Last update since late 2016, so this will be the first inclusion of Science Fiction tracks. Honestly forgot about this list and figured it would be fun to rearrange it to my current tastes and see how it looked. Fell in love with a few songs I never gave much attention to before, and fell out of love with some long time favorites. Also bumped it to Top 25 (from 20) because there are just too goddamn many exclusions otherwise. (Hell, there still are.)
Brand New, Long Island, NY. The best band to evolve from that shitstorm of a new millennium. I made an original top 20. Due to some recent events, seeing Brand New live for the 6th time, having them release some new reworked songs, and giving a deeper listen to each of the songs, I've got an updated version of my original list. It's not much different but it's more accurate that the first one. I also wanted to redo the list as an album list, to have the album art pictures. So there. | 25 | | Brand New Daisy

07.18.16 | I said before that Missing You has top 10 potential if it were to ever be re-recorded with good quality. Goddamn I was right. | elliootsmeuth
07.18.16 | Logan to Government Center is probably the best song off of YFW. Pretty good choices. | JohnnyoftheWell
07.18.16 | Oh yay more definitive lists | tectactoe
07.18.16 | ^that's right. | elliootsmeuth
07.18.16 | Wow, 6 times... I've never seen a band more than once... | tectactoe
07.18.16 | 2007 twice, 2009, 2014, 2015, 2016. Last two times were slightly disappointing set list choices (just due to similarity to previous shows) but they still play their hearts out each night. | elliootsmeuth
07.18.16 | Wow, you've been with these guys a long ass time. I've only been listening to them for 2 and a half years. I'm gonna be seeing them at Riot Fest and I have never been anywhere near this hyped for a concert. | tectactoe
07.18.16 | yeah, I first got into them a little after Deja came out, late 2003. I remember vividly playing GTA: Vice City in my room while listening to that record. I hope for your sake, they play Luca. IMO, it's probably the best song they do live. Chills every time. | Feather
07.18.16 | I've seen em 3 or 4 times and tbh, their not one of my favorite live bands :/
they are still one of my favorite bands of all time, but imo their live shows are lacking | Cormano
07.18.16 | no quiet things, daisy, bought a bride, out of range, mixtape, degausser
shit list | onionbubs
07.18.16 | so am i the only one who doesnt really like missing you that much?
and why no degausser? | Sowing
07.18.16 | Admirable list but is missing a few essentials
#ThisListNeedsJesus
#NotToMentionTommyGun | tectactoe
07.18.16 | "no quiet things, daisy, bought a bride, out of range, mixtape, degausser"
Quiet Things. Lol. Daisy & BaB are both very good, but didn't make my top 25. I refuse to treat OoR as a real song until we can get a better recording. Mixtape & Degausser are also good but just outside the Top 25.
You'll never make everyone happy. Luckily I don't give a fuck. | tectactoe
07.18.16 | "and why no degausser?"
I do like Degausser. A lot. It's just that I like at least 25 songs more.
"#ThisListNeedsJesus"
I new you'd come here to say that :) Again, I really do love both Jesus & Tommy Gun (& Sic Transit). But they all suffer from being the first songs I fell in love with when their respective albums came out, and I kind of burned out on them. I mean, I still listen to them regularly, and enjoy the hell out of them, but time has uncovered a more deep-seeded love for the other songs on those records, and that has withstood the test of time more-so for me. It's not that I don't like Jesus or Tommy Gun, I just think BN has 25+ better songs. And that's saying something. Part of the reason I love these guys. | onionbubs
07.18.16 | this has gotta be like the first top brand new songs list ive ever seen without degausser wow | Feather
07.18.16 | Degausser is their undisputed best song tho...
tbh your list is pretty poopy | tectactoe
07.18.16 | Degausser would be 22 if that makes you feel any better. I can stretch the list to top 25 and then your statement wouldn't be true. | tectactoe
07.18.16 | lol Degausser is good but there are at least 5 better tracks on that album alone. And that's not a knock on Degausser (for fucks sake TD&G is one of my only 5/5's), it's a testament to how good the other songs are.
And Degausser is far from their undisputed best song. That's not even close to true. I've seen way more people praise Limo, Nobody Moves, Noro, or Play Crack, tbh. | Cormano
07.18.16 | "Quiet Things. Lol. Daisy & BaB are both very good, but didn't make my top 25. I refuse to treat OoR as a real song until we can get a better recording. Mixtape & Degausser are also good but just outside the Top 25.
You'll never make everyone happy. Luckily I don't give a fuck."
lol I was jk list is actually solid although I don't fully agree
also we are getting a studio version for Out of Range, that was announced with the reworked demos | Cormano
07.18.16 | also waiting for the day someone shows In a Jar some love as I do, that song fuckin rips | tectactoe
07.18.16 | ^So I heard. I'm very excited for the studio Out of Range. I'd also love a studio Good Man and Battalions at this point, too, so then everything would be complete.
I think In A Jar is underrated big-time. It's in the upper-half of Daisy for me, I'd say. Just didn't make the top 20 cut. | Feather
07.18.16 | Nope, you're wrong, Degausser is their undisputed best song | alienobserver
07.18.16 | "Nope, you're wrong, Degausser is their undisputed best song"
snort | Conmaniac
07.18.16 | surprised at 2. I would prob include Sink and In a Jar. also Jesus and Tommy Gun | tectactoe
07.18.16 | ^Sink is 6 | barcafan21
07.18.16 | 20 is way too low imo, one of my favorite pop punk songs ever
you got 1 right tho | tectactoe
07.21.16 | 70x7 is great but Logan is the song from YFW that has always had my heart. | matbla00
09.12.17 | what about the new album? I think there is plenty of good ones | tectactoe
06.05.19 | Whew update for the first time in nearly three years!
Still not at all confident with any of this list because I love all of these goddamn songs but here's my best shot. | butt.
06.05.19 | shit, just reading that line from Lit Me Up made me want to relisten to the whole album.
Also, you messed up your choice for the Same Logic lyrics! Should have gone with the "Boy, we gave you every opportunity" lines at the end | tectactoe
06.06.19 | Could've chosen a few others for SAME LOGIC, too. The chorus might be my favorite, honestly. The way "same logic" is kind of used as both a line ender *and* beginner, evoking the whole circular meaning thing. | butt.
06.06.19 | yeah the whole song is fantastic honestly... "goddammit you look so lovely, but you sound so ugly" | Sowing
06.06.19 | Pretty good list. Some noticeable omissions (insert "you need Jesus" joke here), but we have an awful lot of overlap in our top 10 so I can't be mad. | butt.
06.06.19 | ah gotta agree, didn't notice jesus was missin. I still dig tho | tectactoe
06.06.19 | @Sowing, haha Three years later and you haven't changed :)
I really do like JESUS CHRIST, I swear, and I understand at this point it's pretty much the ubiquitous "Brand New" song. The one that you'd use to introduce people to the band (god I remember when SIC TRANSIT GLORIA used to be "that" song) and it really is a good summation of everything they are, I guess. I dunno, maybe I'm a little burnt out on it? At least, relative to the rest of their catalog anyway.
I remember I got TD&G as a Christmas gift from my mom. So, like, a month after it came out. And JESUS was easily the song I listened to the most, because it was one of the only songs where I wasn't immediately like "the fuck am I listening to? This is nothing like Deja!" and it had something of the Brand New I recognized.
As I inevitably acquired a taste for TD&G (which would now rank in my favorite albums of all time, easily), JESUS kind of receded to the back of the pile during that transition. It's still integral to the album as a whole, and in the context of music itself it's an amazing song, but I suppose the "growers" are the ones that have stayed with me the most over time.
Same thing kind of happened with e.g. TOMMY GUN and SIC TRANSIT GLORIA. Those were my Deja go-tos when I first started listening to it. Nowadays I still love those songs dearly, but tend to favor things like PLAY CRACK THE SKY, GOOD TO KNOW, JAWS THEME, etc., which, funny enough, were the songs I didn't care for much when I first popped in Deja.
I have a strange relationship to music. | PyramidNoise
06.06.19 | Only surprising omission for me is Waste. Easily my favourite song on Science Fiction.
Then again, this isn't my list. | butt.
06.06.19 | Waste has grown on me, but it's still pretty average from a songwriting standpoint | PyramidNoise
06.06.19 | I really like the lyrics. Especially this bit:
I'm hoping that in time, you can lay down
All this weight you've been carrying around and maybe one day
You'll find your way
To climb on up out of your grave
With the bits of you you managed to save | PyramidNoise
06.06.19 | Also am I the only one that really liked "I am a Nightmare"? | JustJoe.
06.06.19 | Luca is my numero uno. | JustJoe.
06.06.19 | @PyramidNoise
You might be. | butt.
06.06.19 | Yeah I never cared for IAAN. But I looooove Mene | PyramidNoise
06.06.19 | I dunno, just really like the chorus. | tectactoe
06.06.19 | IAAN isn’t bad, it just feels comparatively basic at this (or that) point in their career. | Sowing
06.06.19 | Everyone's experiences are different tec, and that's what shapes tastes. For me, I was immediately floored by TDAG in its entirety and has no trouble transitioning from Deja. To me, it was immediately an improvement in both sound and lyrics. The lyrics make Jesus what it is to me. It's truly something special. I had so many mini-revelations listening to that track...I remember when I realized that it was actually an open letter from him to god. It's a pretty easy thing to realize once you've listened to it more than once. Then the lyrics really took hold and there was no looking back. | tectactoe
06.07.19 | Good point, and I'm just ribbing you :) I know how much you love JESUS CHRIST. And though it didn't make this particular Top 25 list, JESUS is probably in the upper-echelon of songs I love hearing them play live. (Along with YOU WON'T KNOW and LUCA.) | parksungjoon
02.29.20 | yikes |
