9 Best Albums Of '09
Yup, they really were! |
1 | | Nick Cave and Warren Ellis White Lunar
36 songs, 5 films + a few other random tracks, 2 discs. Nick Caves piano/guitar combined with Warren Ellis' violin/voila make for some brooding, enchanting and hauntingly beautiful soundscapes. These songs are the soundtrack to films such as The Assassination of Jesse James, The Proposition and a few more films. |
2 | | The Flaming Lips Embryonic
A surprise after the dreadful displays on A Christmas on Mars and At War with the Mystics. Instead of creating another synth laden adventure such as that on Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, they go for a more 'normal' sound that works very very well. |
3 | | Thrice Beggars
They don't seem to disappoint. Dustin's vocals are emotional filled with perfect one-liners, such as that on 'Circles' where he sings, 'We talk too much; we talk in circles', Dustin is matched with stellar musicianship. |
4 | | The Decemberists The Hazards of Love
Overblown theatricals, odd concepts, angelic female vocals and non-sensical lyrics. The Hazards of Love has it all and then some other random stuff thrown in. |
5 | | Devin Townsend Project Ki
This is volatile, heart-renching and mentions Blacks for some unknown reason. Duris Maxwell's drumming is very very good mixed with Devin's vocals makes for a mesmerizing experience. |
6 | | Devin Townsend Project Addicted
A lot more melodic than Ki. This is largely contributed Anneke Van Gisbergen's angelic voice. This is a lot more 'fun' than Ki, it's just missing something. |
7 | | Paloma Faith Do you want the truth or something beautiful?
Best debut of the year. There is something about Paloma Faith which warms your heart while also breaking it. It plays with your emotions which females just do so so well. Whether it be letting me aware that 'it shouldn't take Valentines Day just to show me that you love me'. |
8 | | Florence and the Machine Lungs
Another female debut which is full of heart. While Paloma Faith is a bit more blunt, Florence makes anger fun. This is especially true on 'Kiss with a fist' where she sings, 'A kick in the teeth is good for some/ A kiss with a fist is better than none'. |
9 | | Mumford & Sons Sigh No More
Males can do emotions fairly well too. 'Little Lion Man' shows us that by them letting us aware that 'But it was not your fault but mine/ It was your heart on the line/ I really fucked it up this time' |
