Perfect Songs ROUND 4

come all ye faithless..
1U.S. Maple
Long Hair in Three Stages

the theme this round are SONGS THAT TRAVEL ON ODD TRAJECTORIES.. think no-wave, experimental music, art-rock etc etc. something that subverts itself from melody, while still retaining a nucleus of structure somehow, devil only knows.. songs that pull in random directions, project strange noisescapes and still feel as infectious as any other more conventional song would.. The album to your left is a prime example of that in its entirety..
2Various Artists
No New York

As it this classic compilation.. open genre.. hit me with it.. the stranger the better, as long as it's not hollow experimentation without a dot on the horizon in its sight..
3Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band
Trout Mask Replica

4.5 or higher (with potential exceptions made if the rec makes me badly want to check out the band's catalogue..)
4The Fiery Furnaces
Blueberry Boat

Dino

Straight Street - the intro to this tune slides around every place.. i loved it, it broke its own rhythm constantly, without jilting the tune, the half-spoken vocals that came in were fantastic.. the song takes a more conventional form soon after though, with the vocals gaining a grandiose tilt that sort of turned me off a bit.. the ending also had some nice noisy aspects slicing it up.. started off and ended with a bang, but the middle section sagged it down into traditionalism.. apologies.. 4/5 ELIMINATED
5Kiko Dinucci
Cortes Curtos

Friv

Uma Hora Da Manha - the serrated trumpet was very James Chance-like, in a grand way.. great stuff really.. but fairly conventional in the grand scheme of its influences.. 3.5/5 ELIMINATED
6Rat At Rat R
Rock and Roll is Dead, Long Live Rat At Rat R

Sandwich

Rape - this was fucking amazing, but you knew that, Sandwich.. appealed to my every angle of noise rock and early post-hardcore sensibilities, all melded with some fucking great experimental tilts and a Southern Americana slant that worked wonderfully somehow.. will definitely be writing up these bad boys too.. beauty of an album.. 5/5
7Niechec
Niechec

Blaze

Koniec - beautiful tune and I will be checking the rest of the album.. the brass implosion that smashes up the ambient backbone of the song works in all the right ways.. however, not much of it was particularly subversive or strange.. but the lovely rec absolutely made me want more from them, so by the skin of your teeth, to the next round you go.. 4.5/5
8Storm and Stress
Under Thunder and Fluorescent Light

cyl

The Sky's the Gound, the Bombs Are Plants, and We're the Sun, Love - the clattering, lurching, askew percussion was really the only thing that broke the song from its straightforward math rock modus.. decent song, but not weird enough i'm afraid.. 4/5 ELIMINATED
9David Sylvian
Manafon

Fripp

Snow White in Appalachia - Sylvian has been a good haven for you both here and in other rec tourney we collided in, Fripp.. he's the perfect midpoint between where our tastes diverge.. on first listen, this one, while beautifully dreary and unsettled, wasn't very strange at all.. on repeat takes, little kinks and the subtlest strangenesses started creeping in.. stick around, i suppose, see what's good.. 4.5/5
10Black Light Burns
Cruel Melody

Aeri

Iodine Sky - this was not what I expected from the guitarist of Bisque Limp Kit at all.. i mean I know he's long since been THAT guy in a shit band, that perpetual excuse of 'terrible band, but Borland is underrated blah blah..' but really, he found a good tonality and wrote a handful of decent chord progressions and that's about it.. all that said, this was a fantastic sedate track with some great synth noises happening.. not quite fit for the round criteria, but if more of his work with black light burns is like this, i'll be looking into them.. cheers, dude.. 4/5 ELIMINATED
11HMLTD
To the Door/Music!

Uni

To the Door - great tune, a sort of mash of Bowie, britpop and some electronica.. but none of it is really subversive in any cogent way.. it's just a mildly chaotic track that shifts styles a bunch in a short span.. sorry, Uni, you know I love ya.. 3.5/5 ELIMINATED
12Sumbu Dunia
Sister Nature

brain

Hollow #7 - brain, you know so much obscure harsh music, i wasn't expecting this rec.. it's a great track, but didn't tick any of my strange boxes.. i loved it, and the abrupt shifts worked very well, but yea, this wasn't the sheer havoc i was bracing myself for.. sorry.. 4/5 ELIMINATED
