ART PUNK ---- all arty and punky and whatnot..
2Ought
Sun Coming Down

I. Unique's rec..

This one was a little harder at take-off, but after a few listens, it started to sink into me. I can definitely see why my love for Iceage and Preoccupations compliments these guys. There's a frigid post-punk aspect of detachment to most of the music here, even as it grows in anger and passion, which I like quite a bit. And the thick lazy pummel of songs like the title track and Passionate Turn is undeniable. Just about the only point that detracts from Ought for me are song lengths, which sometimes are elongated without enough modulation to temper it (I know that sounds strange coming from a The Fall fan). If more of the album was as pointed and driven as Celebration, this would be an easy almost-classic for me. But when this album hits my spots, it hits them in just about perfect ways.//4.2/5 and THE WINNER!!

II. Fripp's rec..

I'd never heard of these guys before and my and Fripp's taste often part ways radically. But I love how propellant and atmospheric this thing is. Though I do love my songs to be shorter than a few of the tracks here, for all their heft, they almost never lose that focused bite. Still on a song like Wheat Futures, it feels to me that the song gets where it was going in the first three minutes, and then plows on for three more. Small gripes however. Ghost Trade is also plenty romantic which I like as well. And wild! And it's got scope, which is often absent from more compressed punk niches. This is essentially what I picture when I hear the term Intelligent Dance Music, rather than the laptop masturbation that genre usually tacks. I can dance to this, and I'm most certainly checking out what few other releases there are by these guys.// 4/5

Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!

III. bgillesp's rec..

It's been a decade plus since I listened to Devo, and I'd firmly forgotten about them, but what I love and hate about them all came back as soon as I threw on Are We Not Men. They do such a great job at putting together songs that are at once sound competent and slapdash. They're catchy and fun and walk a good line between art punk and disco synths. Intelligent in some places and purposefully dumb in others. This is probably as on-the-nose as art punk gets. It's punk rock music made by increasingly artistic people. And they're fucking cheeky. And that's the trouble. They are cheeky to a fault, and this album like all of their catalog often slips into novelty territory. Still hard to deny how good this particular effort is.// 4/5
