01.15.17 Grammy Nominees for Album of the Year

Grammy Nominees for Album of the Year

A ranking of the nominees for Album of the Year at this years Grammys. The good, the bad, the unbearable and why I feel so compelled to say so.
5Justin Bieber
Purpose

This album provides a great chance for us to criticize the Grammys and how they go about choosing nominees because honestly, it sucked. I apologize to the hardcore Bieber fans out there and I’m not looking for trouble, but this album was essentially a giant piece of pop trash. The singles were the only semi-good thing about it and a few moments of great potential, but nothing that quite connected the dots.
4Drake
Views

I’ve never really been a fan of rap music, but I listened with an open mind and did not absolutely hate Drake’s “Views.” While the album is a bit over-dramatic, there are some songs with a musical depth that you might not expect and, quite honestly, that you might miss upon first listen. The brutal truth is that this album is pretty average, but it is worth a listen.
3Adele
25

Landing somewhere between ‘this put me to sleep’ and ‘maybe I should hear it again,’ Adele’s “25” was a disappointment for me. While I didn’t expect much, what I got was even less as I drudged through piano track after piano track. The album isn’t terrible and Adele clearly possesses musical ability, but this isn’t one that you want to listen to in one sitting. A few songs here and there make it deserving of a nomination, but don’t get your hopes up.
2Beyonce
Lemonade

Probably one of the most important albums of the year, “Lemonade” stole my heart with the emotional rollercoaster that it is. Never before has Beyonce opened up quite like this and given us something so raw and beautiful. The album is simply captivating and draws to a wide array of people making it one that everyone should hear.
1Sturgill Simpson
A Sailor's Guide To Earth

While tied at a 4 with Beyonce’s “Lemonade,” Simpson’s album is musically superior and provides a new look at what we’ve labeled as Country Music. Written for his son, “A Sailor’s Guide” is one of the most musically interesting albums nominated this year and features a few gems along the way. The album is sure to keep you entertained and won’t disappoint as it strays far from what you might expect.
