Kanye West: A Scandalous Ranking

You all knew this was coming
1Kanye West
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

For some reason it didn't click with me immediately, but on second listen it blew me away. An absolute masterwork of ambition and creativity, MBDTF is messy, complicated, and ravenous in all the best ways. "Runaway" is probably my favorite hip-hop song, which makes sense because this is probably my favorite hip-hop album I've heard yet.
2Kanye West
808s and Heartbreak

Right from the heartbreaking opener "Say You Will," we know this a different Kanye West. Filled to the brim with depressive ballads and lovely musicianship, it's at once his most accessible and daring endeavor to date. It may have cost him many fans, but it won many others over. And without it, we wouldn't have gotten the brilliance that would follow.
3Kanye West
Yeezus

Easily his most abrasive and tight record, Yeezus features an incredibly dark and focused sound (the complete opposite of its successor, The Life of Pablo). While Kanye might be at his most insufferably conceited here, tracks like "Black Skinhead" and "Blood on the Leaves" exhibit an incredible amount of power and artistic talent, so it's easy to forgive.
4Kanye West
The College Dropout

A much more humble album from Kanye than we'd expect now, The College Dropout is a remarkably consistent work of hip-hop. Even with "Jesus Walks" and the ridiculously fun "The New Workout Plan" blowing everything else out of the water, the rest gets by with clever interludes and confident rapping, even if a couple songs are too long than they deserve to be.
5Kanye West
Late Registration

The least startling of all Kanye's releases, this one stayed pretty close to the style of College Dropout but threw in some curveballs with more emphasis on complex instrumentation and features. It has more highlights than its predecessor but simply takes too long to get going, ending up with a very back-heavy album.
6Kanye West
Graduation

Kanye tried to make a stadium-rap album that sounds ambitious but ends up just being pretty solid. Despite the incredible highlight "Stronger," some weaker tracks simply make it an inconsistent, fun mixed bag of an album. I ran out of things to say because when I put this album on I only listen to "Stronger."
7Kanye West
The Life of Pablo

It's just such a messy album. Purposefully messy, artistically messy, I know, but that doesn't excuse the fact that the majority of the album is just uninteresting, repetitive, and forgettable. This is the first time that it sounds like Kanye is just piggy-backing off of other talent; the album is like one giant sample.
