Coldplay: An Honest Ranking

It's about damn time.
7Coldplay
A Head Full of Dreams

While not deserving of all the hate directed towards it, it's undoubtedly Coldplay's weakest moment. But as half-hearted art-pop records go, this is a good album overall, and its weakest moments are ultimately overshadowed by dynamic production and rich variety.
6Coldplay
X & Y

This is Coldplay at its least inventive; that is to say this is the slightest leap between sounds from one album to another that they've offered us so far. While it is much more spacey and metallic, it retains much of the same structure and sounds from their first two records. The lows are some of their lowest, but with highs like "The Hardest Part" and "Talk," you won't catch me complaining often.
5Coldplay
Ghost Stories

This is a strange one. Half-returning to their acoustic roots and half developing a deeper and darker pop sound, Ghost Stories is easily Coldplay's slightest album, but also features an eclectic yet strangely cohesive set of songs ranging from the bombastic dance of "A Sky Full of Stars" to the quiet piano of "Fly On." Every song is a winner, though some more than others.
4Coldplay
Mylo Xyloto

Not too long ago this would've been at the bottom of my list, but this just goes to show how misunderstood the record is. A brilliant piece of pop-rock, a very inoffensive statement on the world of today, and a risky experiment lurching towards electronica would all be good ways of describing the record, but none are 100% accurate of this strange concept album. All I can say is that it sound great and that the ideas presented here are among the best of their entire career. Just give it a chance why dontcha?
3Coldplay
Parachutes

The original Coldplay album hit the needle on the head with a brand of accessible but mature aoustic-based rock that inflamed the radio and critics alike. Despite a few weak links (I'm looking at you "Everything's Not Lost), it's hard to deny the power of the music here. Whether it be the perfect piano ballad "Trouble," the surging atmosphere of "High Speed," or the trademark smiling-through-the-tears sound of "We Never Change," you can't really go wrong here.
2Coldplay
A Rush of Blood to the Head

Since the explosive opener on this album blew audience expectations after Parachutes out of the water, Coldplay was never the same. Switching gears to a much more electric and expansive direction, this was just the first step in a series of transformations that the band would continue to take album after album. It just so happens that this was easily one of the best and most successful.
1Coldplay
Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends

Here's an album that simply, no matter how many times I listen to it, will never get old. It was an easy 5 from first listen, and since then its only grown on me. Every song has a completely unique sound but the album meshes so well as a whole that you can barely tell sometimes. Words escape me right now, but every time I'm feeling down I can throw on the opening piano to "Lovers in Japan" or the saccharine lullaby of "Strawberry Swing" and everything feels alright in the world. That isn't to say there isn't anything sinister lurking beneath the surface in surprisingly violent tracks like "Yes" or "Violet Hill," it's just that pushing it down makes the point all the more clearer.
